So of course a visit to Key West must include a visit to the home of Ernest Hemingway. I also have to check out the famous (or infamous) nightlife on Duval street and I am pleased to find a vibrant live music scene. I purchase a second hand Phantom 3 drone but find out that I cannot fly it in Key West due to flight restrictions, so I have to search for a place to test it. Not being waterproof, I need a remote beach. That I find on Boca Grande Key, which is about 15 miles west of Key West. There is however the threat of inclement weather, and I depend on a few cruiser accounts of the anchorage which assure me that it provides decent protection in a blow. Pershing yachts have always been very close to my heart; not just for their sleek and sporty design but also for the part they played in my formative years in the yachting industry. We may have left Elements behind, but we're not finished with our sailing just yet! After hopping on a plane and traveling nearly half way around the world, we land in Bangkok to start our 90 days outside the EU. And luckily for us, we're still managing to fit in a little sailing while we're gone! We're working with Island Spirit Yacht Charters out of Koh Chang to take out one of their catamarans for the next two weeks! Our first task is to get down to this island on the SE side of Thailand, and when we arrive we have a week to acclimate ourselves to a new culture we have not experienced before. Then, we provision ourselves up and take the local version of a taxi to the charter base on the south end of the island. On August 4th, 2018, we arrived in Swarrow, a nature reserve with 2 resident rangers in the Cook Islands. Then we went to the island country of Niue (our 2nd favourite place after Maupiti) with unlimited underwater visibility, pristine coral, baby humpback whales, caverns and chasms. Breathtaking! From there, we traveled to Neiafu (with dozens of protected anchorages), Pangai in the Haipai region and Nuku’alofa, all 3 regions in Tonga. Next was Minerva Reef for 20 hours before we embarked on the notorious passage to NZ. Since Nov 12 2018, we have been in Opua New Zealand and are loving the friendly people, the lovely Bay of Islands and the access to materials and shops to do some boat projects.
