We go overnight, offshore from Cape Fear, North Carolina to Charleston, South Carolina in our Catalina 30 sailboat. This passage was around 130 nautical miles. Was not the easiest passage but we got it done and it got us further along running from the cold. Season 4 | Episode 62 | Exploring Two Harbors Hello Friends! On This episode I wake up to a feeding frenzy in Cat Harbor and enjoy the quiet solitude of this protected anchorage. Making our way ashore and over to Isthmus Cove we spent the day snorkeling. Slowly exploring all the nooks and crannies we saw Lobsters, Sea Slugs, Sardines, several Octopus and a Moray Eel! Making our way over towards 4th of July Cove and back we were blessed with great visibility and a day of incredible sightings. It's a really odd feeling when you leave your dock knowing your boat will not return unless you sail all the way around the world to get there. It's a combination of very exciting and scary at the same time. It's also quite normal feeling, like we're just going for a day sail - but also quite a relief that after years of planning, the day of our departure has finally arrived. In this episode we check in on everyone's feelings and expectations. A small group of friends and family see us off the dock and we have one of our best nights ever at anchor. It was truly beautiful that evening, which helped all of us soak in the excitement for what lies ahead. What a wonderful world - to see! POSTING DAILY ON SOCIAL: https://www.the-sailing-family.com https://www.instagram.com/the_sailing_family/ https://www.facebook.com/the-sailing-family-voyage/ ----------------- ABOUT US: We are a family of five sailing around the world on a performance catamaran named "Archer" and sharing our adventures in family-friendly episodes on YouTube! OUR ROUTE: We departed the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States and sailed down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Australia. OUR PAST: You may remember us as "SV Honeymoon?" Ten years ago ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named Honeymoon halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via YouTube and, by happenstance, created one of the very first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids. FAQ: More questions? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page on our website or answers to many of your questions in this 40 minute episode: https://www.the-sailing-family.com/faq https://youtu.be/jBzTUVZ5oG4 PLEASE COMMENT!: As a channel with kids on-board, we are required to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you. WE explore Dominica, which is also known as the Nature Island, just a little bit more. Despite it's post hurricane destruction this place was full of adventure and beauty. WE often discover islands mostly by its coastline, but this time we took the time to see the heart of the island. WE enjoy the shopping at the local markets, beach bbqs, enjoy sundowners at the floating waterpark and hanging out with fellow cruisers in the bay. Before we set sail to Guadeloup, we offer our help to rebuild the home of our new friend Albert, a local guide whose home was destroyed by Irma. Follow along with us as we sail around the Caribbean. The Meri Crew sails to the Southern Exumas and have fantastic adventures. A wonderful overnight passage across Exuma sound brought us from Eleuthera to the Exuma chain. We spend a week in Elizabeth Harbor, near Georgetown. The cruising community there is fantastic; there were about 150 cruising sailboats in the harbor. We settled in the anchorage off Sand Dollar Beach, which became like our local neighborhood. We met lots of people, did lots of snorkeling, went to parties, kiteboarded, hiked, and swam with wild dolphins right off the back of our boat.

This small inflatable sailboat is easily assembled in 20 minutes without any tools. Easy to handle, its sailing qualities will give you a thrilling experience. Very responsive, stable, and comfortable in light winds, the Tiwal 3 is dynamic in more challenging conditions. Whether you’re sailing solo or double-handed, it is perfect for your adventures at sea or on a lake! Boat of the Year Award | Best Innovation | by Sailing World U.S.A. "The thing was a blast. I couldn't believe how well it sailed. You could have some serious fun with this, especially in big breeze." -------------------------- ** The Tiwal story ** * The Birth of Tiwal * As a girl, the first time our founder Marion Excoffon was told, “No!” by her father when she asked to use the family boat, her life as an inventor began. It was then she started dreaming of building her own craft, an ambitious feat that would come true years later. On the road to creating an innovative high-speed vessel for everyone from kids and first timers to expert sailors who want to test limits, there were a number of prototypes, failures, challenges and headaches. But, if there’s one thing Marion’s known for, it’s her sailor’s grit! * Combining Fun & Technology * The award winning Tiwal concept is easy assembly and storage - maximum fun and performance for watersports and activities. A Tiwal isn’t your average dinghy! Our design is the result of tons of coordination, talent, and technological savvy. * A Growing Global Community * For our community of Tiwal skippers (more than 2,500 worldwide!) all this innovative design means their focus is fixed on the pleasures of watersports and having tons of fun on a responsive sailing craft. With excellent upwind and downwind abilities combined with high-speeds, Tiwals are a part of both fun and professional performance. The Tiwal 3 received the Boat of the Year (Best innovation) Award 2014 from Sailing World in the USA and the Red Dot Award, with recognitions, accolades, and smiling faces continuing to join together on the waves worldwide. What's the core idea of league sailing? It's simple: We are already familiar with it. It's club against club like in many other sports as football, baseball or ice hockey. Learn more about the format of league sailing.
All of our friends left so we need to figure out how to show the kids a good time. Between circus school, a zoo, roller skating, zip lining and horseback riding we were successful!. But sadly the fun has to end and we have to face the very intimidating Mona Passage. This passage between Dominican and Puerto Rico is one of the most difficult passages in the Caribbean. The Puerto Rican trench is the 2nd deepest trench in the world, in excess of 27,000 feet. They have 600 ft deep areas that are considered shoals that need to be avoided. The equatorial current pushes a lot of water through here doing some crazy things to the sea. The Atlantic trades are on our nose and we have the huge, hot island mountainous island of Puerto Rico right in the middle to disrupt winds and create thunderstorms. ----------------------------------------- Subscribe at: www.youtube.com/c/sailinghangtime Posting on: https://www.facebook.com/sailinghangtime https://www.instagram.com/sailinghangtime/ Recent Videos: https://youtu.be/qd883B_Mo-Q https://youtu.be/IVCn9lyrZdY -------------------------------------------- About us: We are a family of four who have been living on our boat for the past 2+ years with our two boys and our newest addition, a Havanese pup named Ruby. We explore the Great Mercury Island and head around Coromandel to Waiheke before sailing back to Coromandel for a while. We buy an old sailing dinghy on the way and then unload 'Town Fox' and put her back on the mooring. From here we head off to visit family and friends before flying to the UK to pick up a motorhome where we will explore Europe for 8 months. We are a family of six who are taking some time out of normal life to travel. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a camper in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.
Docking can be incredibly challenging and result in lots of damage to your boat, to other boats and to docks. Watch the video to see some simple tips to do this right. Find out about the dock & area Direction of prop walk Prep fenders, dock lines & lifeline gate Ideally, approach into the wind Assign crew roles Slow down! Beam of boat should make contact first Crew steps off and ties off We already took notes! We have included all of the things we said in the video here, so you can just copy and paste what you need for your notes. Learn to sail online with our Catamaran course https://masterclass.nautilussailing.com/pages/free-lesson-offer APPROACHING A DOCK Docking should instill fear, trembling, and extreme caution in every sailor. Every time I bring a sailboat into a slip or to a dock, my heart still beats faster, and that’s actually a good thing. Whenever you try cramming a beautiful sailboat into a tight space surrounded by millions of dollars in yachts, and you add wind and current and prop walk, this makes for a challenging situation. We recommend when you’re working on your docking, find a nice long dock, and ideally practice your docking in calm conditions. We’re big fans of practicing docking at fuel docks. These are usually longer docks, not too many boats around, and it just gives you a little bit more room to maneuver. On this video, we’re just going to cover the basics. There’s a whole science to docking, lots of advanced techniques but we’re just going to look at the simple aspects of docking today. It’s really important, before you come into an unfamiliar marina, dock, or slip, you want to find out about the area. Four things that you want to know: Number one, you want to know the wind direction. Where is the wind coming from? Which way is it going to push your boat? Number two, is there any current in the marina, and which way is that going to push your boat? The third thing is hazards. Often, you might find yourself in an area where there’s an old dock, maybe a strip of wood coming off, maybe there’s a rock in the area. You want to know those hazards. The fourth thing is the height of the dock. This is really important, because we need to know the height at which to put our fenders so they protect our boat when we come in to dock. Another thing you want to know is the effect of prop walk on your sailboat. Most sailboats, when you put the boat in reverse, are going to pull the boat to port. Before we make our approach into the dock, there’s a couple other things that we want to get ready. We want to tie our fenders on. We then want to run our dock lines, one from the bow cleat, one from the stern cleat. Make sure they’re not going over the lifelines or around the stanchion. We also want to open up the lifeline gate, just so we’re ready to jump off on the dock. When you’re coming into a slip or a dock, really important that you plan your approach into the wind. It’s going to make things a lot easier, and just help slow your boat down. As you line up to come in with the dock, you want to be going slow. I can’t emphasize this enough. You really, really want just barely enough speed so that you have steerage. You want the boat going as slow as possible as you approach the dock. Talk with your crew. Make sure everyone is clear on their responsibilities and how they can help you dock. When the boat is one to two boat lengths from the dock, you’re going to want to go ahead and put the boat in neutral. What this is going to do is, it’s going to help you control your speed and just glide in slowly to the dock. As you make your final approach to the dock, it’s really important that you come in at as shallow an angle as possible. As the boat gets really close to the dock, you’re going to want to start pivoting the bow away from the dock. The goal here, when the boat makes contact with the dock, you want the beam of the boat, the widest part, usually near the shrouds, to gently kiss the dock. Right when the boat is about to make contact with the dock, the helmsman can feather the boat in reverse. This means just giving a little bit of reverse and go into neutral, a little bit of reverse, and go into neutral. You don’t want to slam the boat into reverse at this point, or prop walk can pull your stern away from the dock. When the boat has come to a full and complete stop, the crew with the dock lines can step off the boat and go ahead and cleat those lines off to get your boat attached to the dock. Warn you crew ahead of time you don’t want anyone leaping or jumping off the boat. As the boat comes in, if you have people trying to make flying leaps off onto the dock, it’s just a recipe for a disaster. PS. Dazcats Hissy Fit (1495) and Easy Tiger (995) are definitely shaking off the cobwebs as they fly around the cans in this first race of the season. Easy Tiger is sailing for the first time with new partnership owner - we reckon he's pretty happy with how she performed. Hissy Fit was certainly looking smart with her new black sails and she was able to give her new rudder Tfoils a good testing in the stiff breeze and chop...

Years ago, I came up with three rules that can, will, change your life. (assuming you, in your deific perfection, aren't already applying them) Here they are, with one big heavy sort of meta rule. No Excuses. That's the basic basis of rule 2. Time to start adding the donation part. Look, this is getting pretty to be a pretty big deal pretty fast. I'd like to expand and continue this, and a little bit of green helps me stay flexible. paypal.me/santaroga other methods are coming soon.
