How to use a Dinghy - Episode 22 If you are about to sail or have just chartered a boat and are looking for tips on how to use a dinghy (aka inflatable, tender, rubber duck), then this episode covers some handy tips. If you want to remember just one thing from this episode, it is this: wear your kill cord. People die from not wearing their kill cord and falling out of the dinghy. This happened to a good friend of ours - a very experienced sailor - earlier this year in the BVI. One more thing; many countries have their own safety requirements which the driver and passengers should know. Please find out the relevant laws for your country (just google it), and then you know. We shot this episode at the Bora Bora Yacht Club in Tahiti in February, on a Lagoon 52 from Dream Yacht Charter. For this episode we break it up into the following segments: Intro: 0:41 Pre-start things to know 0:54 - two-stroke or four-stroke, oars, fuel level, deck vests, stay connected to the boat until the engine is purring. POST-PUBLISH NOTE: check the water is jetting out the pilot - this cools the engine, and if it gets blocked, can cause the engine to overheat. Sometimes it just requires engine off and a piece of wire up it to clear it out, but sometimes it's a bigger issue (like a busted impeller); Starting the dinghy 02:46 - pressurise fuel bulb, pull choke if required, minimal revs, check it's in neutral, wear the kill cord (repeat, **wear the kill cord**), be ready to put the painter (ie. the rope securing the dinghy) over the front of the dinghy so it is not streaming. Driving the dinghy 04:07 - tiller-steering, turn before you burn, weight the dinghy correctly so it leans away from the swell/wind, only plane if you are light enough to do so, bring revs back to 80% once you are on the plane Stopping the dinghy 06:35 - apply a bit of power in reverse if required to pull up your dinghy (make sure it is locked to the transom), note the angle of your tiller when in reverse, approaching a dock, apply a bit of forward against the dock to keep it there, alongside pickups from the boat. Securing the dinghy 09:19 - items for the dinghy: scoop, cable, anchor. Anchors are useful to keep dinghy off the dock when required. Know your knots - round turn two half hitches on the bite is the most common. Other elements 10:35 - watch your speed through mooring fields, use a light at night, bring a VHF or mobile phone if you need to communicate. Please thumbs up and subscribe! Thanks!! Thanks to Kyle Sykes (instagram: @kylesyks and https://vimeo.com/user14906522) for the shooting and edit, and Celine Freixe (instagram: @celine.fresh and http://celinefreixe.com/) for the titles and polish. ps. Winds remain fickle but gradually settle southwesterly during the night of Thursday, June 6, enabling me to make Poquoson around 0400 Friday. Sleep deprivation is taking a toll as I discover the following morning that I had not secured the anchor rode properly and that it was slowly paying out(!) ... Fickle winds prevail once again as I set off for Deltaville on Sunday, and the 35-mile run turns into another overnight sail. But light winds make it easy to scull the boat into the travel lift slip a few days later. Solo sailing without an autopilot is not much fun. Less than half of the 500nm passage from Colombia to Ecuador, my autopilot stopped working and I could not fix it. Whenever there was wind, I could use my windvane to stear the boat, but unfortunately there were many hours with low and turning winds during which I had to hand stear. I filmed a lot on this passage to give you a good picture of what it is like to be out there by yourself and what the daily routine looks like. Of course, I could have summed up that week at sea in one short video, but I thought this gives you a better feel for the moment. The many fishing nets along the way made the sail a bit like a slalom parcour and I nearly peed my pants when a whale popped up right next to Karl who was followed by his family and / or friends. Apart from being a bit tired, I had a great time and was looking forward to cross the equator. But more about that, next week! Free Diving with Sperm Whales, the largest toothed predator in the world off the coast of Dominica in the Caribbean. *Limited Print* Long Sleeve SV Delos Sun 🌞Shirts featured in this video available now!- https://svdelos.com/shop Our mission to film sperm whales in Dominica began one afternoon when we received a random email from Nate and Jordan. “Hey guys! We have an idea…. How about we approach the government and see if we can get a permit to swim with the whales there? Who knows…” Well, one thing lead to another and after months of planning we were able to secure the permits, the mandatory local guides, and even get some specialized gear to record their underwater communication. The next hurdle- how to we actually track them down? And if we are lucky enough to find them, then what? In this episode we answer these questions. It’s a bit of a departure from our normal videos, more of a mini-documentary feel to it. I’d love to get your feedback. Fair winds- Capt. Brian and the SV Delos Crew Wanna bing watch? We’re in California and were hoping for sunshine but it is raining nonstop and the wind is howling. We do a few projects onboard and explore Fort Bragg while waiting for a weather window to sail south. Then we make the jump to San Francisco and it’s a windy one! But going under the Golden Gate Bridge at sunrise was pretty spectacular! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. Chased by the threat of a possible cyclone we discover the beauty of Australia's east coast islands from Great Keppel to Middle Percy with some fantastic spinnaker sailing in between. The distances involved meant we had to be up early but got to see some beautiful sunrises as a result. We could not pass by without visiting the famous (among cruising yachts) A-frame hut on Middle Percy to leave Florence's mark among the hundreds of others there. We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. We left Fiji with a new crew and headed towards Vanuatu - mysterious and raw country full of unknowns. The passage from Fiji to Vanuatu was fairly easy - for us and for our brand new crew. We arrived Tanna which was so packed with unbelievable experiences that we never encountered before - active volcano Mt. Yasur and breathtaking indigenous Yakel village. Yakel village was featured in the 2015 movie "Tanna". The award winning authentic movie was shot in the Yakel village and was even nominated for an Oscar! No hired actors or staging - just the natural beauty of Tanna. The tribes in Vanuatu don't eat people anymore, but they used to..... A huge thank you to those who help keep our boat afloat by supporting our creative process via Patreon. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee. https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis SAILING disaster preparation Statistically speaking sailing is one of the safest ways to see the world, however things do go wrong. For that very reason sailors carry a lot of expensive safety equipment, which they hope never to use. As the time for our departure back to Fiji grows near, we knew it was time to upgrade some of that equipment. It was also time to have the boys learn what to expect if things turn nasty and we are forced to abandon ship. So, Rob, Declan and Ivan signed up for a Seawise safety course. It was time and money well spent. We also saw our life raft checked and were able to examine first-hand the provisions that get packed inside. For additional details pertinent to this video please read the description below. The most common approach to docking is to drive in bow first, just like parking a car. As we have demonstrated previously, it’s an easier docking approach if you come in at an angle rather than straight in. Before final approach, be ready with fenders and lines, know if you are going to end up port side too or starboard too. Look for and anticipate outside effects of wind and current and how they may be a help or hindrance to your smooth landing. In our Physics of Docking series of instructional videos, we have offered several techniques to assist you when you return to a marina to tie up. Going from underway to moored entails down shifting, remember to take things slow and easy. You add additional risk and potential damage if you arrive too fast, we like to say, “Slow is Pro”. You need enough forward momentum to be able to turn. If you are coming in too strong, reverse to bleed off speed. It’s all about advance positioning so that you are in a good orientation to make your final approach. Keep your hand on the throttle and know your rudder angle. A lot of success is based on timing and there will be moments of gliding with patience as you line up your approach. You can use a short burst of prop wash to kick your stern around. There is no shame in using bow and stern thrusters, but we like to save them for fine tuning and attempt to arrive without relying on their sideways forces. Get your boat close enough so that your line handler can step off to secure lines. No one should jump, if it’s too far to step, wait until you are nearer the dock. If it doesn’t quite work out and you can’t loop a line over a cleat, consider starting over. Each marina has different docking structures. Some docks are fixed, some are floating, some have pilings; no matter the arrangement strive for a smooth, parallel landing. Learn how to handle your boat when conducting slow maneuvers. No matter where you are docking, the principles are the same and practice makes perfect. Once you connect the first line between your boat and the dock it will be easier to finish tying up the remaining lines. We welcome your comments and are working on some additional episodes to share. The White Horse Cliffs on the Northeast corner of Black Point don't get much attention. It's a shame because the view from the top of the cliffs is absolutely STUNNING. Lucky for you - we're gonna take you there to see the sights that only a select few would otherwise enjoy. :) The day starts off with a hike. Then a bit more hiking. After that we hike further. A hike later ensues. Finally, after a fair amount of hiking, we arrive at a mangrove creek. The creek is crossed by wading across at low tide. You'll observe a variety of mangrove creek-crossing techniques at this stage of the journey. Thigh-high water coupled with angry stingrays and dangerously-low-dangling DSLRs make for an exciting wade across. Then we arrive at the cliffs. They're great. They're tall. They're pretty. I'll leave all the details to be discovered whence you observe them within the video. Lastly, we reverse course and hike, and hike, and hike, and hike, and hike, and hike our way back to Black Point Settlement. T'was a rad day of going places and seeing sights. This year's Round the Island Race was epicly long...if you follow our Facebook you’ve had the live updates, the write up and the photos but there’s nothing quite like being able to immerse yourself in the experience of racing around the Isle of Wight on board the winning multihull, Dazcat 1495 Hissy Fit…so, we bring you the video. Join us through the highs and lows of what was a fairly tortuous race. With many thanks once again to the organisers and their volunteer teams. Also to their race partners: Yachts and Yachting Magazine, Sailing Today Classic Boat, Raymarine, Helly Hansen & MS Amlin Yacht. Brilliant teamwork from the crew: Simon Biffa Baker, Robin Russell, Richard Bickford, Steve Matthews, Brendan Seward & Oriel Butcher (Dazcat Media) Also, Andrew Sinclair of Highwater Sails (official suppliers of our North Sails) for getting half of us us there, and Robin for lending us his car to get us back! #Raceforall

Sailing to Great Barrier Island - DELIGHTFUL DOLPHINS GLOOMY SAILING and DELIGHTFUL DOLPHINS In this episode , we leave Uruapukapuka Island and sail around the corner to the beautiful Oke Bay, to wait for some wind to sail south to Whangarei. We are joined in the bay by a pod of four super friendly bottlenose dolphins, who come to play and stay all day. We have never had a dolphin encounter like it. Extremely playful, they just seemed to want to interact with humans, so we were happy to oblige . We set sail south on a gloomy, rainy day for Whangarei, where Jo has a rant at a local fishing boat and we are joined by, (yes you've guessed it) more dolphins. We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel!
