In episode 76 we join Troy and Pascale who are cruising remote Australia in their 30’ Clansman yacht called Mirrool. They left Perth in March 2017 and so far, have made it halfway around the continent traveling through the Kimberley, Arnhem Land, Torres Straits and Far North Queensland documenting their adventures along the way on their YouTube channel "Free Range Sailing" to over 59,000 subscribers. They share their love for sailing and adventure including how they deal with the challenges of long term remote travel in their tiny floating home on a modest budget. It's a great YouTube blog for sailors who love camping, fishing, foraging, bushcraft and remote wilderness adventures. Troy and Pascale are a great example of buying a yacht to fit your budget and then setting off sailing and worrying about working out the detail along the way. After arriving in St Martin and collecting our new Lofrans Tigres windlass we eagerly set about installing it. We had a few challenges during and after the installation. To celebrate and to test our new windlass, we took our good friends Kenny and Mika out for a sail to Tintamarre island north east of Marigot Bay (St Martin) where we encountered a few teething problems with the new windlass. However, with a little bit of modification and some outside the box thinking it all came together in the end! After more than 6 months of hauling anchor by hand we finally had a new working windlass! Just wait to you see the drone footage of the Hollandaise Cays, it is breathtaking, quite simply a jewel in the sea. Margarida takes a run on a huge sandbank and looks for shells and finds them in their 1000s although not quite what she was looking for. GTFO plan #3: Scariest moment - our boat taking on water We want to share our GTFO plan to retire early and sail the world. In this video, our practice boat takes on water. It was very scary and we were lucky we were able to get an emergency haul. Learn from our mistakes and how we would handle it differently in the future! We plan to retire June 1, 2023, Dennis’s mandatory retirement date when he will have served 30 years in the Army. We currently own a 1984 Catalina 30’ monohull sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay. This is our practice boat and is not designed for the open ocean and too small for full-time, liveaboard life. We plan to buy a Neel 51’ trimaran (http://www.neel-trimarans.com/modele_bateau/neel-51/). A trimaran is much safer than a catamaran, more comfortable than a monohull, faster to escape bad weather, and spacious to accommodate our Brady Bunch, and possibly you! We had the chance to visit and live in many beautiful countries including China, Hongkong, Thailand, Romania, Lithuania and France with our previous jobs, that made us realize how fast the world is changing and how fast the life is going and there is no “later” than “now” for the project we have in mind. In early 2019 we took a one-week sailing courses that opened our eyes of new ways of travelling and changed our life style. In June 2020, we decided to sell everything we own, house, car and lot of stuff that we do not need anymore so that we can buy a sailboat and go for an undetermined voyage around the globe. We bought a catamaran Lagoon 450s delivered in France in July 2021. We invite you to share with us our adventures of learning, exploring and making our project come to life. We install and test the Pelagic autopilot on the Pearson Triton sailboat, Atom. Tested it first on the rivers in Georgia and then on a round-trip offshore passage of 160 miles to St. Augustine in winds from calm to 20 knots on all points of sail including wind against tide. It is slightly noisy compared to a windvane. It used about 1 amp in near calm and 2 amps average in 15 knots of wind, boat speed 5 knots and moderate seas. It's great for coastal navigating or in light winds or motoring when the windvane won't hold a course or as a backup if the windvane failed offshore but it seems robust enough to handle even a long offshore passage. Cost in 2019 is $875 which makes it significantly less expensive than the EVO-100 and probably better performance. (2025 update: I've been told that the latest Pelagic versions no longer have the user programmable parameter adjustments shown in this video so you only need to make the gain adjustment now.) Ein staubiges Vergnügen. Danach beginnen wir mit weißem Lack und Teak Lasur das Holz wieder schön aussehen zu lassen. Parallel machen wir die Elektroinstallation an unserem Mast. Auch unser Cockpit bekommt ein neues Gesicht. Wir fangen das restliche Teakdeck wegzuhebeln und bauen die Fläche mit Rostversiegelung und Grundierung neu auf.
