On our way to Mostar, we stopped by a beautiful little water village near the mountains on a peaceful December day. A little bit of backstory about this location: There is a dominant belief within the dervish orders, applied to the construction of Tekija, which holds that the surrounding environment is a part of the overall worship of God and a part of Tekija itself. We experience the extremes in Sumbawa, Indonesia. From swimming with the WORLDS LARGEST SHARK to competing in the BUFFALO RACING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. And he's not too proud to admit it. So, when the Indian family he'd just given a GT (Giant Trevally) to asked what they could do in return he saw his opportunity to up-skill his cooking prowess for our sailboat. Two nights later, armed with more fish, some chicken and a bundle of vegetables, Rob and Rachel trundled along to their home for cooking lessons. Also learning a thing or two was Declan who paid a price for procrastinating on a repair job his father had requested be done a few weeks earlier. And, to emphasize the point, Rob partook in a little procrastination himself. In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. The International Maxi Association Secretary General, Andrew McIrvine, presented Bouwe Bekking and the team with the IMA Trophy for Monohull Line Honours in the RORC Transatlantic Race. Bob Steel has won the Rolex sydney Hobart Yacht Race on two occasions and his current QUEST Farr TP 52 yacht has also won it on two occasions and second on another and now they line up for another tilt at the trophy. But, Bob has had a accident and may not be aboard this year. He exolains all here.
