World Strongest Tidal Current runs up to 20 knots! - Saltstraumen in Norway I start this episode out by attending a man over board drill with the crew from "In The Same Boat" before I get back on the road and continue to Saltstraumen just south of Bodø. This should absolutely be on your list of what to see in Bodø. Saltstraumen is the world strongest tidal current which moves up to 20 knots and moves up to 400 million cubic metres (110 billion US gallons) of seawater through a 150-metre wide strait every six hours. It also creates giant whirlpools of up to 10 meters in diameter and 5 meters deep. Then its off for a sail to the reef, weather dependent. It’s a windy time and on the way we decide to head for Butterfly Bay on Hook Island to check it out. We left the road - and took a break to enjoy the 5* hotel life of Tui Blue. We were invite to stay 3 days so we treated ourselves well - a massage, manicure, a cabana on the beach - a well deserved break from being off the grid and as a sailing family on the road. We love our travel family vlog adventures of our land rover defender road trip, but can’t wait to be back on the Perfect Sense, our Sailing Yacht and enjoying the sailing life. We have been limited in the amount of activities we have been able to do and we are in need of other ways to let us have fun and keep us in shape. Wet season means waterfalls and Langkawi has a couple of giant waterfalls! Langkawi also has some very high peaks that disappear into the clouds and what better way to stretch our legs than to climb to the top of the second highest peak in Langkawi! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! After dodging a big storm and skirting down the edge to avoid 40+ knots of wind, we make it to the anchorage at Belixe and anchor in a managable 30 knots. The waves in the bay were huge, great for surfers but not so good for me and the dog going for our nighlty mooch, the tender ride in was just a little exciting and we were lucky to make it back out, they were crashing around us and over my head as i dragged the tender out through the surf and tried to drag the dog in. Out we finally got to the safety of our waiting anchored Pickle. We soon move on and have a lovely little sail onto Portimao and ended with a fabulous sunset in a beautiful anchorage.We are loving making these episodes for you guys! we are learning sooo much having huge amounts of fun and showing you the madness on the way.... next episode is a longer one as we sail to Faro and enter at all the wrong time.... make it through and explore the stunning Island of Culatra. After a long summer in an extended locked down due to the global spread of COVID -19 it was great to finally get out for race. The team of GTR was rusty and missing a few regulars, this did not stop the crew from enjoying a great day on the water. With little ability to predict when world will return to normal you have to take your opportunities when you can. Hopefully things don't get worse and we can complete the series over the next month. If not we can finish the 2020 season with some great memories of a sunny September day on Strangford Lough.
