Despite the global COVID-19 pandemic we made our way over to the Maldives to go on a seven-day Liveaboard journey around the central atolls. Our ship was the MV Carpe Diem and luckily we had most of the divespots for ourselves. The weather was sometimes rough and the wind was very strong in the first few days. That was one of the reasons why the visibility was mostly poor. But the underwater fauna was as present as ever. We experienced Mantas, Whale Sharks and many other shark species. Social distancing definitely didn't apply to the underwater world of the Maldives. Another sunny afternoon when we spontaneously decided to take the boat and sail in the bay of Palma. We anchored close to Cala Nova/Illetes where we had a small lunch and a fantastic swim. Later we sailed across the bay and lowered the anchor just opposite of the cathedral where we spent the night on board.

Swing keels are the most versatile keels available, but it comes at a cost. Let's discuss those costs. I'll also show you two technical diagrams to explain the mechanism of both lifting keel designs, the swing keel and the centerboard (centreboard in the UK). The main difference between the swing keel and centerboard is whether it's a weighted keel or not. The centerboard is unweighted and not as good at reducing heel. Both reduce slippage to leeward considerably. If you found this video helpful, please subscribe to the channel. Make your sailing dream a reality today with my eBook! “If you’re going to do something, do it big!” That is a statement both Rikard König and Jon Linden agree on, but when they met in 2015, they had no idea that they five years later would be running one of the most promising IoT startups in the world. In this #openfika webinar, Rikard and Jon share their personal stories of how it all really started. Rikard, a PhD/Senior Lecturer in Machine Learning and Jon, a serial tech entrepreneur with no academic credits, now on a mission to shape the future by making connected things (IoT) smart. Squalls are focused small storms, with wind speeds that can approach and exceed gale force. As we get closer to the Caribbean, these become more and more common, especially at night, to the point that we’re rarely less than a few miles from one. Since they travel roughly east to west at speeds of about 10-15 knots, they catch up to us from behind. But with radar and the ability to steer to port and starboard, we can sometimes change lanes and let the squall pass to one side. As we approach the finish line in Saint Lucia, boats that were previously far away begin to converge. And as all sailors know, if you have two or more boats headed in the same direction, you have a race. Talisman is well positioned for this as we had kept to the north, setting up a favorable wind angle for rounding Pigeon Point and into Rodney Bay. This turns out to be a key decision, as several boat didn’t have the angle to make the point at Pigeon Island, requiring them to jibe and head north for a half-mile or so before resuming course. It was satisfying to see, in a schadenfreude kind of way. Winds die off some as we enter the protected waters of Rodney Bay, but no matter. We’ve left most of the other (several) boats behind and it’s just us as we cross the finish line. Many days later we watch from Talisman at dock as the final ARC 2019/2020 boat is towed into the marina. Later that night, we head to the ARC Awards Ceremony to see how we finished overall (Did we Win!!!). It’s hard to know for sure in advance how we’d place since the start times were based on when your boat actually crossed the start and finish lines. Plus, as it turns out, while not against the rules, using your engine for propulsion while under way is penalized by the officials heavily. Only the computers will tell the final tale. sailing videos, sailing, cruising, monohull, oyster, oyster yachts, sailing blog, sailing vblog, sailing vlog, atlantic crossing, crossing the atlantic, ocean sailing, max fercondini, max fercondini actor, luis oliviera, ARC, atlantic rally for cruisers, ocean crossing, 2020 arc, 2019 arc

So the helm seat was the first thing on our list to actually improve upon now that we have a Sailrite sewing machine. We're still new to this type of sewing, so this project is a bit of an experiment/training round. But all in all, we think it turned out pretty well! Check it out! In this episode, it is September in Maine and it seems like it gets colder by the day. It is time for us to start heading south, toward the crystal clear blue water, white sand, and palm trees of the Caribbean. First, we have to hide out from the remnants of Hurricane Dorian. In doing so, we found some awesome places in Maine. We sail from Some's Sound, the United States only natural Fjord (at least according to Wikipedia, and yes it is much smaller than Norway Fjords), to Castine, Maine. Castine is home to a good hurricane hole and the Maine Maritime Academy. Our merchant mariners are the lifeblood of our economy, ensuring goods are moved around the world. They are also trained to assist the nation in time of need. Next time you see a ship go by at sea, it could be a past student of MMA or many of the other maritime colleges around the country. While at MMA, we watch some college sailboat racing, visit with the sailing team, and get a tour of their training ship, the "TS State of Maine". She is a 500 foot long oceanographic research ship that was turned into the training ship for the state of Maine. She may have even helped to hunt for submarines in the cold war, but you didn't hear that from us. After a great time in Castine, we head across Penobscott Bay to Belfast, ME to grab a few items at the hardware store. After quickly checking out the friendly town, we sailed down the coast to Camden. Camden is a hub of shipbuilding and home to the famous Lyman Morse Shipyard. Camden's tight inner harbor is also home to a few other sister ships of our own boat, the J-Boats J/46. After a quick sail through the harbor, we keep trucking south. Rockland is next, but not before Roxy goes for a walk around the heeling boat to try and stretch her sea legs. We anchor in Rockland for the night before we head further south to Nantucket, MA. So who are we? Well, we aren't Sailing La Vagabonde, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Gone With the Wynns, or Sailing Delos. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty spiffy and fast monohull sailboat that likes to eat cruising catamarans like the Fountaine Pajots, Leapords and Lagoons for lunch and leave them in the dust ;-) We are Kate and Curtis, a sailing couple, with our sailing dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca. We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes, and our goal is to cruise around the world via the capes (the wrong way or the hard way). We will see if this will happen or not, as the "new normal" has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, enjoy our videos and join us on our journey via our YouTube Channel. #sailing #sailinglife #maine #travelvlog Want more: You can find out where we are and track us live on our website: www.sweetruca.com If you want to get social: Facebook: www.facebook.com/rucasailing Instagram: www.instagram.com/rucasailing Patreon: www.patreon.com/ruca Thanks for watching!!!!

On this episode of WE|Sail, we are becalmed a few days out in the middle of the Pacific en route from Costa Rica to Mexico with no wind to take us anywhere. We expected to have a few days of no wind during our entire passage, and honestly we where not too sure how many extra days it was going to add to the entire journey. However, we didn't mind it. The calm tranquil seas nearly 500 miles off shore was serene and entertaining to say the least! Which is not something you would expect to hear, but we really enjoyed sitting out in the middle of the ocean, calm as could be, no land, boat or human to be seen for days. The ocean was glassy and smooth that at times we couldn't tell where the sea met the horizon. We had frequent visitors from sea turtle and dolphins, keeping ourselves occupied as time slowly crept by. We have never felt more at peace than we did in the middle of the ocean. Disclaimer: We all agree that this coming cyclone season in the South Pacific with the closure of NZ and OZ is serious and that everyone has to carefully decide on the best strategy to protect himself and his vessel during the coming cyclone season. This article should not be perceived as dismissing any cyclone danger and making it sound as happy cruising without careful planning. If one moves from one anchorage to another, he might find his bolt hole full of boats by the time he comes back to it to weather a possible coming cyclone. Perhaps arranging with local people to build a permanent mooring so you have a reserved spot if going away could be a good solution. Another solution could be to stay the whole season in the one anchorage you feel safe and help any newcomer to pick a good spot, not too close to yours. Working all together for everyone's safety is the way to go ... not fighting each other! The ones with prior cyclone experience should help the ones with less experienceRight now because of Covid, lots of cruisers are in a turmoil and stress over where to safely spend the coming cyclone season in the South Pacific with all current border restrictions and especially the refusal by NZ and Australian govt to let international boats to enter and spend the cyclone season there, as they have traditionally done. The following is my own thinking and based on my own experience! I am no guru, no expert, no fortune teller and what I am sharing is just to give you a different point of view. Remember, at the end of the day, you are responsible for your choices and you will be dealing with the consequences, good or bad! I am not telling you what to do, I am just telling you what we did, for your information. The predominant popular belief is that the best way to protect one from cyclone is to go where these do not occur ... and that obviously is a very smart way to protect oneself. Today, with NZ and Australia closed borders, it is not an option. Many sailors right now in the South Pacific thus cannot follow with their original plan to head for NZ or OZ. In the past 30 years, several sailors did spend cyclone seasons in the North & South Pacific with delight! Unlike in the Caribbean, in the Pacific, to be named a cyclone only takes 35Kts! Often they are quite compact and winds are quite low just 30nm from the center. Still, with climate change and all, one season might be worse than another and a few cruisers lost their boats over the years but then again, the passage to/from NZ or OZ did also claim boats and lives! We cruise with pets onboard and the difficult & expensive regulations to enter NZ & OZ with pets made us look for an alternative way to be safe during cyclone season. From 1999 to 2012, we cruised the South and North Pacific full time, without ever going to NZ & Australia. In 12 years, we hunkered down on a few occasions and weathered only 2 cyclones. French Polynesia is a great place to spend time. First of all it offers the Marquesas, perhaps rolly for monohulls except in a few places, but no cyclone from memory :) Local people are very friendly and provisioning by air & sea with Tahiti is regular (albeit expensive) and local administration has been usually quite humane & understanding. Long term visas could be obtained from abroad with valid reasons and Europeans can stay as long as they like. Avoid the Tuamotus and really pick a good protected anchorage if staying in the crowded Societies. American Samoa offers Pago Pago as an good hurricane hole (we spent almost a year there and weathered easily cyclone Heta) and should be easy for American citizens. Tonga and Fiji have several areas quite well protected as does Vanuatu & New Cal. Insurance coverage is very hard to find, unless one is ready to have huge deductibles and/or huge premiums so this is a case of preparing yourself as best as possible. If in a crowded anchorage, help each others to be prepared, familiarize yourself with hurricane preparedness .. you will be much calmer should one come your way! We survived hurricane Luis in St Maarten in 1995, when 1000 boats were lost and only 200 survived! The worse was not the wind but the building seas and jerking, chafing on lines. Most cruisers like to find a protected area near town so it might be crowded also with local boats … but sometimes perfect places are deserted because far away from towns... Another old alternative is to go nearer the equator in these low lying islands where no cyclone ever comes but these islands are quite isolated and only appeal to more independent & adventurous cruisers. We spent great cruising going from Fiji to the Marshall then FSM, Palau before ending up in the Philippines.

#popolidelmare Info su https://velistipercaso.it e http://nomadizziamoci.it --------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 2020 Tutti i diritti riservati. Jordan's dad joins us for a week sailing around Catalina Island. The kids learn about catching their first fish and decide that maybe they like the fish in the ocean better and on a hook. Jordan rock runs in crystal clear blue water at Little Harbor.

Found a catastrophic crack in the backstay Chain plate while polishing the stern. Thank goodness I noticed this while at anchor as we would have likely lost our mast on our downwind run from Avalon to San Diego in a few days! Thanks to Charley Canby here in Avalon for the use of his fabrication shop.

One of the things I love best about the sailboat cruising lifestyle are the spectacular views and sunsets that we get on a regular basis. It’s been difficult being under lock down due to Covid but we still had wonderful views. And now that we’re able to finally move about again we can re-experience and really appreciate the views that we might have taken for granted last year and the year before. Join us for our first sailing experience post the covid lockdown we had in Grenada. Please give us a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel. Welcome to SV Charlotte Sailing! After finding out we are going to be grandparents for the first time, I went a little crazy and bought a sailboat. Join us on our journey to get SV Charlotte ready for her Bluewater return and follow our craziness from Tennessee to Florida and beyond! In this episode we visit the boat for the first time and do a little project work. However during our weekend of projects, we received the call we've waited 9 months for. You guessed it, the sailboat namesake and our 1st granddaughter "Charlotte Elizabeth" is on her way. Mommy went into labor and we're making our way down to Florida to welcome her home. We couldn't be more excited and as you'd expect, this video is the beginning of our journey becoming grandparents! Welcome to the world Charlotte Elizabeth! SV Charlotte - 1981 Hughes 38 Captain: James S. 1st Mate: Lisa S. If you want to support our dream of getting SV Charlotte back to Bluewater and see more of our adventures, please consider stopping by our Patreon Page and join our community!
