Fall is one of the best times to go sailing in South Carolina. Cooler temperatures are more comfortable, but the water is still warm enough for swimming. It’s high time for Shrimp, Oysters, Blue Crabs, Stone Crabs and more. Darkness comes earlier making it a perfect time for early evening moon gazing. The last week of September, we sailed south just a few hours and anchored in Edisto, SC. We initially were in Edisto River while we waited out a storm with plenty of swing room, then made our way back to our new home for a few days in Big Bay Creek. We hiked Edisto State Park, learned of the map markers placed by Benjamin Franklin’s grandson in 1849, and about the water quality monitoring that is done in the Ace Basin. We explored the creek systems, including the tidal creeks where you can only move your boat in and out at high tide, and got lucky to see shrimp popping and baitfish jumping at low tide. We harvested oysters for appetizers one night, and Stephen caught a Spanish Mackerel which made up the rest of our meal. We walked the beach and Stephen explained the jetty system in use for littoral drift. We dined at the local Seafood Dive, Whaley’s. (Don’t expect much from restaurants – it’s all fried seafood). On our sail home, we were elated to use a North wind to sail close hauled at 9 knots on an 18 knot wind. Of course, no week on the boat would be complete without some projects. We went up the mast to diagnose our radar connectivity issues, put our Website Address sign on. The winds died shortly after race started, it was called off and Karen was pissed. Steve just wanted another glass of wine. We spent the rest of the day motoring and cooking back at the slip. The next day the winds were better and we had a great sail. We also repaired our Ritchie SP-5C compass which had a leak in the diaphragm. It seems to be holding fluid now. Ken’s year of doublehanded sailing kicked-off in February, a few weeks before we knew close-to-home, short-handed sailing would be so popular this summer. Luckily for Ken, talented crew and world-class competition are never hard to find in Newport, Rhode Island. Inspired by the growing doublehanded trend, Ken has been alternating races with his brother Brad and Suzy Leech. They’ve been getting to know their boat Alchemist, a Sunfast 3300, and bonding as teammates. Putting in their miles on the Sunfast has brought them several successes. Alchemist has won on handicap in all three races entered and took line honors in the New England Twin/Solo and was named the overall winner of the Ida Lewis Distance Race.

Nuova tappa del viaggio sulle rotte dei Popoli del Mare: da Porto Santo Stefano partiamo per un giro dell'Argentario, fino a Porto Ercole. Porto Ercole deve il suo nome agli Etruschi che eressero qui una fortezza che rispecchiava la costellazione di Ercole, eroe assoluto degli Argonauti. Siamo nella punta più estrema del promontorio, dove fu trovato spiaggiato il corpo senza vita del Caravaggio, morto di malaria. Ma l'obiettivo di Syusy è scoprire qualcosa in più dell'antico Porto di #Orbetello, praticamente inespugnabile in passato, ben protetto dai tomboli della Giannella e della Feniglia, a partire dagli studi di Mario Pincherle (vedi il libro "Il porto invisibile di Orbetello"). La misteriosa opera idraulica della Tagliata di Ansedonia e - soprattutto - le mura ciclopiche poligonali, datate ufficialmente al 200/300 a.C. Possibile che siano costruzioni romane? Lo stesso Vitruvio si espresse diversamente, attribuendole a popolazioni ben più antiche. Altrettanto arcaico il tempio sull'acropoli di Cosa, dedicato al culto della mater matuta. +++ I POPOLI DEL MARE +++ Fin dall'antichità è sempre stato più facile girare il mondo per mare che non via terra. Sull'acqua – chi naviga lo sa – non ci sono confini e a volte basta lasciarsi portare dal vento. Syusy, appassionata di archeologia e misteri della storia, ne ha sempre tenuto conto viaggiando per il mondo e navigando su Adriatica. In particolare nel Mediterraneo, dove navigare è come spostarsi nella Storia! Da tempo Syusy ha seguito le tracce dei Popoli del Mare, indagando l’origine, gli spostamenti e le abitudini di queste antiche popolazioni che colonizzarono il Mediterraneo prima di Etruschi e Fenici, i misteriosi costruttori delle mura ciclopiche poligonali che si trovano sparse in tutto il mondo. Sono Popoli del Mare i Tirreni, i Shardana, i Paleset, i Tursa, i Siculi... Ma prima di loro c’è stato un tempo in cui altre genti ci hanno lasciato testimonianze incredibili, soprattutto di tipo architettonico. Li chiamavano Pelasgi, ma chi erano in realtà?
