I've been itching to tell this story since I got here...how NZL20 formed the foundations for 29 years of Kiwi participation in the America's Cup and how the bright red boat played a major part in bringing the Cup to New Zealand. On the eve of the 36th America's Cup, where so little is known about the relative performances of the Challenger and the Defender, this is an apt reminder about how New Zealand has led the technology charge for so many years and how a winning formula can go wrong in a heartbeat. Out of lockdown and back on the road, I head out of Auckland to find out more about this fascinating boat and how it shaped the future.

Leaving Colombia behind we set sail and head to our 18th country, Panama, and more specifically the San Blas Islands. It's a 180NM sail from the Rosario Islands just outside Cartagena to San Blast Islands of Panama. We sail with our friends from SV Libre and take off in the late afternoon. I (Isabelle) give you a taste of what we eat on a passage as Kieran trims the sails to near perfection. I get interrupted mid vlog, by my favourite animal...lets just say I got a tiny bit surprised. After 6 months of not having a working diesel engine for my sailboat I finally get her back up and running! If you ever feel frustrated and feel like your engine will never start again I know the feeling! In this episode I change my starter motor, fuel lines and install new injectors on my Yanmar 2QM20 marine diesel engine. Find out how it all went down.

This week an exciting package arrived that we’d been waiting for for a while. We enthusiastically rented a car and headed to the shipping centre to pick it up... only to be told it was still on a boat heading to St Martin and would arrive in the next few days. With a car rented and nothing to use it for, we decided to check out a bit of the island, including the deserted Philipsburg, usually a cruise ship and tourist mecca. Several days later, and after another failed attempt to receive the parcel that seemingly wanted to evade us, we rented another car determined to have it in hand by the end of the day. Half a day later and we were following the delivery van around but finally managed to get said parcel into our possession!! Later in the week, to stretch out legs, we decided to hike up to the highest hill we could find in St Martin, and on the way explain how we got gifted such a generous present. The cow hitch, also called the lark's head, is a hitch knot used to attach a rope to an object. The cow hitch comprises a pair of half-hitches tied in opposing directions, as compared to the clove hitch in which the half-hitches are tied in the same direction. It has several variations and is known under a variety of names. It can be tied either with the end of the rope or with a bight. It can also be used to attach dyneema loops to fixed points or rope to create attachment or fastening points. The Cows Hitch or Larks head has the slight disadvantage that it will easily untie if load is only applied to one end of the tails, you can follow a couple of variations of the knot to make it secure if your use case dictates load will only be applied to one line. Finishing it with an additional loop to create the pedigree cow hitch or larks head. The third variation puts and additional loop in the knot to have the same result that you get from the pedigree version. The team at bottom up boats recommend these knot to quickly join pulleys to fixed points or to create loops to hang gear form. Our favourite use case for the larks head or cows hitch is as the finishing knot in our 10 second soft shackles. Premetto che non tutte le mie giornate di studio sono così, prima di tutto perché lavoro a tempo pieno e quindi non potrei materialmente studiare per 13 ore e poi perché non credo sia salutare studiare così tanto nel lungo termine. Tuttavia, per me una volta ogni tanto è utile dedicare una giornata intera allo studio, concentrarmi al massimo ed entrare nel flow per portare a termine tutto il programma assegnato alla giornata. Spero che il video vi piaccia e vi motivi a studiare molto se dovete farlo, ma ricordandovi di dare priorità alla vostra salute e di dedicare del tempo allo sport e allo svago. The weather reminded me on a day at the German Baltic Sea. Unfortunately the wind forecast was wrong. Instead of nice 20 knots of wind we just got a little breeze in our sails. But on half way between Kaş and Kalkan some dolphins entertained us for quite a while. It's always a pleasure to see these wonderful creatures playing in the sea.

Het zijn trainingsdagen en avonden waar iedereen met veel plezier geniet van het samen ontwikkelen van vaardigheden. Vandaag, 6 maart 2021, gaan we naar Muiden om in een vreemde haven te manoeuvreren en daarna naar Pampus voor een ankeroefening aan de kade, zoals dat in Griekenland gedaan wordt.

Het was stiekem toch een wedstrijdje, wie de druppel tegen de meerpaal aan kon leggen. Met uitgerolde fok. En de winnaar is.... Benjamin!

Vandaag was er veel mist en konden we niet gaan varen buiten de haven. Ninon en ik hebben samen salsa muziek gemaakt in de band Cerveza Fria. Ninon speelde in deze band conga en timbales en ik zong. We wisten niet van elkaar dat zeilen onze andere passie is. Toen we daar achter kwamen hebben we gauw op de boot afgesproken. Samen met Ninon ik allerlei manoeuvres gedaan. Normaal vaar ik solo en gebruik ik de middenkikker spring. Maar nu Ninon erbij was konden we samen in de voorspring varen. Ninon heeft nog geoefend met de paalsteek om de stootwillen goed te bevestigen. We hebben verschillende boxen voor- en achteruit in- en uitgevaren, en kozen steeds smallere boxen uit om te oefenen. Als laatste heb ik de boot de box vooruit ingevaren, in de box de boot gedraaid en weer vooruit uitgevaren. We hebben samen een erg leuke dag gehad. Volgende keer gaan we zeilen. Er ligt sneeuw. Ik ga elke dag even kijken en de sneeuw weghalen van mijn boot.

Vandaag heb ik de boot stilgelegd met de kop in de wind, om te oefenen met het stilleggen van de boot voor een brug. Daarna heb ik aangelegd met de middenbolderspring en ben ik weggevaren door de middenbolderspring te veranderen in een achterspring. Dat heb ik een paar keer gedaan tot ik motorpech kreeg. Ik lag gelukkig vast aan de aanmeldsteiger. De gaskabel bleek afgebroken en de morsekabel bleek nogal losjes te zitten. Met hulp heb ik de boot weer terug kunnen varen naar de box. Unsere Atlantiküberquerung 2020. Wir segeln die letzten Meilen in die Karibik. Mittlerweile sind wir bereits eine Woche, mit unserem Segelboot, auf dem Atlantik unterwegs. Wir kommen auch immer besser mit der Situation auf See zurecht, nur das schlafen fällt vor allem Kerstin nicht so leicht. Aber mit jedem Tag kommt Barbados näher und wir sind schon sehr gespannt welche Abenteuer uns in der Karibik erwarten.
