We finally reach the San Blas islands of Panama after a two days sail from Colombia, and all we can say is WOW! We didn't think places like this still existed. Crystal clear blue water, palm trees, white sandy beaches... yea that's pretty much it, there is nothing els around. No hotels, no malls, no restaurants. After being in the busy city of Cartagena for almost a month it was amazing to come here and just relax. But when we got to the beach we saw the amount of plastic that had been piling up on shore... we had to do something. We dedicated one hour to try to collect as much garbage as we could. 14 big garbage later, I (Isabelle) got pretty passionate and starts a new challenge. This was one of those months where nothing came together. The Christmas winds were in full swing in the Caribbean and we were stuck in the somewhat unsheltered outer anchorages of (not so) sunny St Martin. After a month of relentless 30 knot winds, the accompanying swell and two failed attempts to install the Hydrovane, one of which resulted in destroying a pricy component, we finally caught a break and made a third attempt at the job that almost broke us. The weather forecast told us we had two days break in the bad weather. We knew that we had to make the most of this break as we were doing this job at anchor. Trying to perfectly and symmetrically place the Hydrovane is a daunting task on dry land, let alone in 6 foot swell at anchor. Fortunately for us, the forecast proved correct and we were determined to get the job done, NO MATTER WHAT. After two long days and late nights of sanding, drilling, sealing, epoxying, measuring and remeasuring, we finally had completed our largest and arguable most challenging upgrade to date. Episode #179 - Cutting up my own boat Hello Friends, This is a throwback project video from the summer of 2020 when we started the massive project of redesigning and rebuilding our head. One of only two real weaknesses of Alberg 30s is on the early models the laminated deck beam below the mast can delaminate and allow the rig to go slack and possibly dismast (the other known weakness is undersized chainplate bolts) To solve this problem I installed a compression post under the mast and moved the pass-through to the V-Berth to starboard. This also allowed us to be able to enclose the head and turn it into a “wet head” so we could install a shower This first episode in that saga covers me cutting out the bulkheads and Camille installing the compression post. The Seagull Striker and Martingale are a critical structural part of the forward beam on the vast majority of catamarans. They strengthen the front beam between the two bows and take the load from the forestay which is usually either attached to the beam or the longeron. In our case we will make the forestay attachment on the longeron just behind the seagull striker. We also would like to improve our sailing range by adding an attachment for a storm sail. This video shows the lamination process of the front beam to longeron. We use the tip of a carbon fibre spreader as our seagull striker and make our own carbon martingale strap. Are we making a mistake? We are trying to buy a boat in the Caribbean but things haven’t been going to plan. We moved onboard, sailed to another island, delivered two boats across a border and then finally got our survey and sea trial. Now we’re hauled out in the boatyard and it’s time to negotiate on price. To save time and money, we start work on the simpler jobs and get to sanding, painting the anchor chain, going up the mast and we’re still trying to fix the generator! And finally, we make our decision on whether to buy this boat. On part de la marina pour se remettre à l’ancre dans la baie de Luperon en vue de se préparer pour notre départ vers Puerto Rico. And rightly so, because as we came to moor the boat alongside the concrete pontoon, you guessed it… we crashed the boat!! Our tiny home got her first bump and we were devastated at our first boat fail! However, on our journey to a liveaboard off grid life, we will surely encounter a few more sailing fails like this... In this episode we will show you how to unstep a sailboat mast with a crane and some elbow grease, in preparation for boat transportation, as we move our sailboat cross country (a few hundred miles) to her new home in Brighton. You will also see us move the boat from Brundall Bay Marina to Bell Boats Marina (both Norfolk broads) to get her hauled out the water ready to be transported by road. Bislang haben wir die Biskaya überquert, schwere Situationen in Spanien und Portugal gemeistert, den Atlantik in 22 Tagen überquert und wir haben es geschafft unseren Motor auf Guadeloupe zu reparieren. Jetzt geht unser Weg weiter richtung Westen. Die nächsten 2 1/2 Jahre werden wir nutzen um den Pazifik zu durchqueren, den indonesischen Raum zu erkunden und letztendlich nach der Umrundung des Kap der guten Hoffnungen wieder Fuß auf europäisches Land zu setzen. The stars were pretty much aligned for the top three contenders in the Star fleet, but all three races were needed to determine the winners on the southern course.
