The REAL Story of cruising the Bahamas on Kristina Marie

Hello everyone. Here’s a recording of the engine noise from inside the saloon and in the cockpit, with the engine warming up at a touch over 1000 rpm. I was observing the sound level using Decibel-X, with an A-weighted scale. When I wasn’t talking the level was in the 58 to 60dB range. If I did speak, the level jumped up, so there’s a clue. Apologies for the cheesy backing track, but I needed something in place of the original audio, which was too crackly in one of the clips. I should have closed the companionway doors when I moved inside. It would have been even quieter. Venu de l’antarctique, le courant froid du Benguela, refroidit les masses d’air océanique au large, qui lorsqu’elles parviennent au-dessus des terres continentales, se réchauffent, se dilatent et créent cet épais brouillard qui d’après le levé hydrographique dépose entre 1 et 10 litres d’eau douce au mètre carré. Encerclés par cette épaisse bruine, nous serions témoins d’apparitions spectrales, que cela ne nous surprendrait même pas ! L’ambiance est mystique ! Les falaises embrumées, arides et escarpées se font battre par l’océan, l’atmosphère est insolite, presque Martienne ! Des lambeaux de méduses gisent sur l’eau satinée, petit à petit, le nuage absorbeur s’estompe et notre nouvel abri se devine ! Nous sommes près de Mercury island dans la baie de Spencer. Le décor dantesque pourrait servir à une scène de film fantastique, mais le malheureux qui s’est échoué là, n’a pas dut le voir sous cet œil ! L’armature de son bateau sert maintenant aux otaries. Elles sont des milliers à occuper la fatale crique, plantureuses, elles s’ébrouent, braillent, sèchent, se font entendre et surtout se font sentir ! Moi qui me plains des flatulences de mon Tchoupi, inutile de vous dire que j’ai trouvé pire que lui ! Côté odeurs, les volatiles sont pas mal non plus ! Installés sur une île voisine, fous, sternes, cormorans, mouettes, manchots et j’en passe, sont suffisamment nombreux pour que leur guano donne l’illusion de sommets enneigés et si les baraquements qui y sont aménagés ne sont pas un ancien camp de récupération de la fiente, il y a de forte chance, avec cet environnement riche en faune, pour que cela soit une base scientifique. Un vrai royaume de recherche sur les espèces, difficile de réaliser qu’à moins d’un mille de toute cette vie, le Namib sévit ! Mais que l’on ne s’y trompe, désert ne veut pas dire inhabité ! Derrière son aire hostile, il abrite bien plus que ce que l’on imagine et les habitants n’essaient pas d’en dissimuler les preuves ! Incrustées dans le sable sur des kilomètres, leurs empreintes témoignent de leur présence et celles-ci n’ont pas l’air bien vieilles. Est-ce celles d’une hyène, ou même d’un lion ? Une chose est sûre, vu où mènent les traces, c’est que ce sont des charognards ! Des carcasses d’otaries par centaines sont rejetées par l’océan, des milliers d’os jonchent le sol, le festin est certain et à l’évidence, le nom de côte de squelettes n’est pas dû au hasard ! Nous n’avons pas à attendre long-temps pour que nos observations soient corroborées par l’arrivée d’un chacal. À seulement quelques mètres de nous, il flaire sa proie, devine sa pitance, cherche son gibier. Le document animalier grandeur nature est passionnant jusqu’à ce que l’on se rende compte que le canidé sauvage, sent nos propres pas !
