After spending quite a few very rainy days sitting out the weather in Gulnare Inlet we decide to just go for it and take Peanut up the creek in search of a potential cyclone bolt hole. It’s absolutely beautiful with mangroves, Norfolk pines and giant fruit balls! The rain just doesn’t cease. We have a small fire on board which kills our depth sounder and as we are in a very shallow, tidal creek we decide to brave the 45 knots of weather and head out of the inlet to safer water. How do we prepare for an offshore passage? In this episode we go through our thoughts on weather and food prep to make our lives easier at sea. After getting knocked around by a storm in the Chesapeake we get outta dodge by pulling into an anchorage, but the damage is already done. With a damages railing, pole, and the crew's nerves a little rattled we pull into Cobbs Marina in Virginia to prepare for the next passage. After inspecting the rigging and bending back our railing as best as possible Kazza prepares her famous pulled pork recipe to keep the crew morale up for the next leg of the journey around Cape Hatteras! Sailing St.Martin to Anguila and visit its stunning beaches and resorts. Some of the best beaches in the world we would say. Anguilla is probably the best sun & sand destination in the Caribbean. Following our short trip to the island of Saba, s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg Rassy 54) continues the cruise through the Leewards, departing French St. Martin and sailing the short distance over to British Anguilla. After a month on the busy and rather chaotic island of St. Martin, the small and low populated coral island of Anguilla seems like a holiday for us. Stunning beaches, beautiful resorts, very friendly people and a much less agitated way of life here. After a beam reach then a short windward sail, we anchor in Road Bay. The only safe place to moor. Then, in our usual fashion, we tour the island seeking out the best beaches and resorts. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We spend three more days working to get it back to the one piece it was when it was originally moulded in Vietnam. The underside of the hull went surprisingly easy, but then we had to deal with keeping the upswing even across both sides as we bond it together with our thickened vinyl ester. We have used a combination of teaching methods from traditional schooling to home-schooling to unschooling. Living on a boat we are easily distracted by nature. In 1997, after missing out on his Olympic rowing medal dream, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014, and married with three children we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Preparing for Offshore Sailing and Medical Emergencies at Sea | Harbors Unknown Ep. 26 Today we are discussing the types of medical emergencies that may occur at sea, how you can prepare for them and how to approach them if they do happen. Please note the content is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. We’re here with Dr. Wayne Lee, an emergency physician, and experienced sailor. If anyone is qualified to discuss this topic it’s him. The way we’d like to approach this is to first classify the types of emergencies that can happen while crossing an ocean. The author William Buckley spoke of preparing for emergencies at sea in one of his books, and categorized them in terms of the amount of time available to deal with the issue. Each one of those problems requires pre-planning. Medical emergencies that occur while sailing at sea can be approached in the same way, compartmentalizing them three main categories. Minor manageable injuries on the boat you can deal with and keep going, more severe injuries where you have time to get somewhere to deal with them and lastly, the emergent situation. You can also think through the lens of personnel, planning, and equipment, with planning being the most important. Equipment is the medication, splints, sutures, etc. Finally, consider who’s on board and what may happen to them. We varen het eerste deel van het Noord-Oostzeekanaal tot aan Rendsburg. De lood ballast die we eerder naar voren in het schip verplaatsten leggen we weer terug naar bakboord. Wij zijn Ben en Felia. Jaren hebben wij de droom gehad om samen over de wereld te zeilen. In mei 2020 zijn we aan dit grote avontuur begonnen. In onze Atlantic43, Eva genaamd, gaan wij waar de wind ons brengt. Wir ankern zwei Tage im Ormos Frangos/Elafonisi und warten auf ein Wetterfenster, um das Kap Maleas runden zu können. Trotz Wetteränderung bläst uns der Wind kurz vor dem Kap heftig entgegen und wir finden Schutz in einem kleinen unbekannten Hafen. Am späten Nachmittag flaut der Wind soweit ab, das wir die Strecke bis Monemvasia endlich in Angriff nehmen können. Kurz nach Sonnenuntergang treffen wir dort ein.
