It’s freezing, bring a jacket, even in summer. Don’t bring your drone as there are limited places you can fly with all the helicopters and national park laws. If you like hiking, try to add a few days in Te And as the Keplar track was simply incredible, and we didn’t even touch the famous Milford Track (you need a guide)! We anchored our new Lagoon 46 for the first time. And where?!? In the Douro river, in the heart of the city of Porto. We had only planned for a quick stop in Porto, which turned out to be 17 unforgettable days. On our first morning in the Marina in Porto we went to explore the neighbourhood. The nearest little town was São Pedro de Afurada. We strolled around this little Portuguese town with its typical houses with tiled facades and later had lunch at one of the local grill restaurants. It was lovely to see how our kids started to connect more to nature and their environment by living on the water. On their own initiative, they started picking trash from the water. And even though they will not save the entire planet this way as they like to think, it’s definitely a very good start. We had travelled to Portugal many times before with our camper but we never stayed this far north so this was our first time visiting Porto and I knew we were gonna love it because we love the Portuguese culture and architecture and we are also big fans of the port wine. Instead of taking a taxi to the city centre, we tried going with our own little taxi boat, we took our dinghy to go upriver and see if we could leave it somewhere near the centre. We got permission to tie up our dinghy at the taxi dock, which was right where we needed to be. It was a perfect parking spot in the centre of Porto. By the end of the week, the weather deteriorated and a storm was heading our way. We didn’t want to take any risk and didn’t want our trip to the South of Portugal to be too unpleasant so we stayed until we were sure the weather was favourable for us to leave. During the heavy weather, it was very unpleasant to stay in the marina, the boat rocked against the pontoon the entire time, which caused a lot of unpleasant noises and movement on the boat. Sleeping became almost impossible, so we decided to anchor in the Douro river. This would be our first time anchoring. What an experience! We sailed up the Douro river and under the famous Maria Pia bridge. It was exciting and also a bit thrilling, of course we knew the bridge was high enough, but from underneath it looked like we didn’t have much space left. And then there was the anchoring in the river, with a high wall on one side and constant boat traffic on the other we had to anchor at the exact right spot, not easy with the current at that moment so we had to try several times. I was especially worried about hitting the wall at night, so I slept with one eye open and was very surprised when our boat turned during the night because of the changing tide. We did not think it would have an influence up the river. But we had anchored well so all was safe. The next days were amazing. The view from our boat was wonderful and we were so close to the city. As the weather cleared a bit we had a few fun days in the historical centre of Porto. We strolled through the steep streets of Porto and walked all the way up to the Cathedral, the views are beautiful up there. We visited the market and drank some delicious hot chocolate at Chocolateria das Flores. We also tried a new drink, Porto tonic, together with our new friends. And we visited Liam’s favourite place ‘Livraria Lello’ one of the most emblematic bookshops in the world. As soon as the weather was favourable we left for the South, another storm would follow and we needed to be in Portimão to get our saildrive repaired. We stocked up on some delicious Portwine and the typical Portuguese sardines before leaving on our 3-day sailing trip to Portimão in the South of Portugal. I got fed up with this rat race like routine city life and I got hooked on the idea of sailing and living on a boat full time. But with 0 (zero) expirience that would be difficult to achieve... I took a Transport Canada course and received my first boat license... I watched tons of boat related youtube videos and got myself registered with dozen sailing forums and groups on a facebook... In May 2020 I came across a facebook post. Sergey was looking for a crew to bring his boat to the Caribbean. I travelled 1300 km from Montreal to Halifax to join him on his boat. The trip was cancelled two months later for legitimate reasons. Since I made my way to Nova Scotia I decided to discover this beatiful province before going back to Montreal I returned to Montreal February 2021... I have not given up on my dream of sailing. Because of this Corona virus situation in the world It is just being put on hold... We're not on the boat anymore. A journey into the Australian Hinterland. We introduce you to our home, family, friends and life before sailing took over. Waking up in the hills we trek down 8km of dirt road to good old Mullumbimby to meet Slims Mum. We feel we need our fix for boats and go for a quick row before catching up with all our mates at the famous Brunswick Heads pub. Firstly, detouring to the Brunswick Heads Bar, flashing backs to memories of our horrendous bar crossing on our first ever sail together. We then scoot back up the coast, dropping our dinghy off for repairs and get our headsail sorted for a new UV strip. Yes we are off the boat but yes we are still doing boat jobs. Mesmo sem máquina, removida para reparos... resolvi sair da frente do Iate Clube Belém e rumei para a Ilha Cotijuba. As margens do Rio Pará. Lembrando que este Rio, margeia a Ilha de Marajo pelo lado leste. Programando chegar ainda com luz do dia, velejar pela orla da cidade, com grande tráfego fluvial...navios, ferrybolts, balsas é grande quantidade de pequenas embarcações, cruzam sua proa a todo instante.., sai ainda com a maré vazando 3/4 para o final. Ruim que o vento que soprava de E na casa de 10 nós, ainda na ancoragem na praia do farol, minha preferida...e por ser domingo, com bom movimento. Com uma lancha fundiada, pouco mais de seis metros, no bombordo...tive de redobrar os cuidados para não derivar para cima dela, qd a âncora desprendesse do fundo arenoso.. ainda mais sem máquina e obviamente, sem guincho elétrico. No braço mesmo tirei os quarentas metros de corrente, jogados na profundidade de 4 m! Vento entrando pela popa, levava o barco para cima da corrente.. então coloquei na água, um pneu, que trazia sempre para criar arrasto e minimizar o problema. Intenção coroada de êxito, pois quando passei a correte no cunho, concluindo a operação... o manteve-se na mesma posição, sem derivar. Com isto, fui tranquilo até a roda de leme e guinei-a para boreste. O que fez o barco se afastar da praia. Claro que tirei o pneu da água antes disto. Maré contrária e pouco vento.. me fez bordejar pelo canal de Cotijuba, que dá acesso ao Rio Guajará Açu... o que margeia a orla de Belém, área nobre do Porto, estação das docas e Ver-o-peso. Em média vencia a corrente contrária à 2.5 e 3 nós. Previsões para tempestade foram aparecendo na medida que contornava Belém. Desabou um dos maiores CBs que escureceu tudo. Forçando o Pedal, todo rizaso, derivar muito para o meio do rio. Momentos de difícil controle, ainda mais com o gps para de funcionar, na hora em que ouve uma descargas elétrica, nas imediações. Como tenho outros de reserva, coloquei o segundo em ação. Ao rumar na segurança para o Rio Guamá, vento reduziu ainda mais... mas já com a maré, agora favorável, fui derivando até próximo o fundeio. Não antes de ficar preocupado com a balsa que preparava para sair para Barcarena.., quando, derivando... mesmo com velame em cima, passei suavemente pela popa do empurrador. Ufa Fundiei 1/10 de milha longe do iate... Hj qd a maré quase parando de esvaziar, levante o ferro e deixei o Pedal, derivando, aproximar para novo fundeio, agora local habitual! Bvs
