Since this video was made Mustang have obtained approval for MOB Lifesavers in their lifejackets and the Danish Maritime Authority has ordered MOB Lifesavers for their instructor/inspectors to take out to sailors to show how retrieving a casualty back on board can be made easier with an MOB Lifesaver in the casualty's lifejacket. We conducted 30 man overboard retrievals at Southampton Boat Show 2021. Our star cast was Ellen, Ed, Wendy, Jesse and Bo, with Tom as 'safety officer'. And of course the headliner of the show were the MOB Lifesavers in the SeaSafe lifejackets. Without a Lifesaver in the lifejacket the casualty would not have been rescued. On our sail from New Zealand to Fiji we noticed a leak coming from the rudder shaft so one of the jobs on our to do list is to take out the rudder to inspect the bearing and the seal to see if they need replacing. Before we can do that we first need to remove the quadrant. The quadrant is part of the steering system on boats that connects the steering wheel to the rudder. Our quadrant is a large circular disc which is about a metre in diameter! This greatly reduces the power on our steering system. Our rudder shaft is in carbon fiber and the quadrant is in aluminium and whilst trying to remove it we discovered it is glued to the shaft with epoxy, with no easy system to remove it. It also means working in the extremely skinny aft section of our boat! It’s time to get Nutty back in the water and where she belongs. We leave Rosshaven Marine and head back over to Magnetic Island. Then it’s back to Townsville again to pick up parts and explore the Strand foreshore. Magnus starts on the ‘simple’ job of putting the navigation light back on after it fell off when we took Nutshell out of the water, but… a little job turns into an ‘all dayer’! The first leg of the Mini Transat EuroChef was launched this Monday 27 September at 15:30 hours local time in France.
