Its finally happened! We have, at last got around to cutting off the front of the boat!!! Well not quite but almost! In this week's episode we tackle the rusty anchor chain locker which we know many of you have been waiting for us to do. It's a daunting job with some tricky fabrication and large, heavy, cumbersome, pieces of steel so maybe that's why we've been vacillating. As noted above this clip is from my video documenting my solo ocean passage from Los Angeles to Hawaii. Location: 22 14.036n 154 19.919w I have only just started learning how to fish and I think my knot failed rather than the 30lb test leader breaking. I had one other Cedar Plug onboard but didn't want to risk losing it knowing I had no clue what I was doing and might need it incase of emergency. I had more than enough food onboard so I was fine. The Marlin and fish stayed with me for two days and the Blue Fin tuna stayed with until I approached Oahu. They would stay close to my hull and only zip out to eat then return to the hull for safety. This episode we get some spectacular final underwater exploring around the beautiful beaches of Maui before setting sail and sailing around the beautiful but secluded island of Molokai. We have enjoyed our short time visiting Maui and as our time comes to an end we spend it mostly underwater, snorkeling around some very beautiful areas that are just teeming with beautiful reef fish, turtles, and colorful reef fish. Next we sail from the Maui island to the isolated island of Molokai, where we are only allowed to view from the boat, as visits to shore require special permission. Molokai is a very special island, in that it is far of the beaten track of the usual visitor to Hawaii. Molokai is also home to the largest sea cliffs on earth, giving us vistas like we have never seen before. Sit down and enjoy this once of a lifetime voyage around an incredible Hawaiian island! One of the many skills we practice is retrieving an unconscious person into a dinghy because some day we may need it and will be very happy we figured it out and practiced it. I (Nicole) tried muscling it the first 8 times and was exhausted by the end. But that didn't stop me from trying it again another time. It truly is mostly about technique and not strength. Dans cette confusion venteuse, le constat est sans équivoque, la mer agitée est détestable ! Néanmoins, ce désordre marin à un avantage, il concentre les poissons, et notre nouveau petit leurre fait ses preuves… Sous toiles réduites, deux ris et foc roulé d’un tour ou deux, Black lion s’apprête, sans le savoir, dans la lourdeur de l’air à passer une nuit de déroute ! Le crépuscule vient juste d’avaler les dernières lueurs et l’obscurité est déjà complète. Tous nos instruments sont réglés pour la nuit. Baisse de luminosité, alarmes de vent, vitesse du bateau, radar, Ais, Vhf sur 16. Justement, c’est elle qui nous fait sursauter par un grésillement ! Black lion…Black lion… Black lion… Port side, starbord, les mots se mélangent. Il faut loafer. Un navire à manœuvres restreintes est sur notre trajectoire. Son CPA (Closest Point Appoach), plus précisément, sa distance estimée la plus proche d’une possible collision, est trop faible. Nous devons nous en éloigner, d’autant que le bateau en question est un remorqueur suivit d’une barge ! Plus tard, ça sera un voilier, tout feux éteins, par peur de se faire repérer par d’éventuels pirates, qui nous fera dévoyer, avant qu’un cargo nous demande à son tour, de bouger. Si ce n’était que ça, nous aurions pu passer cette nuit dans la catégorie, fantasque, mais c’est au titre de perverse que nous la surclasserons… Dans la noirceur profonde, les lumières des plateformes pétrolières aveugleraient presque, mais il n’y a aucun doute, les émissions radar l’affirment, nous passons loin d’elles ! Par contre, l’anémomètre qui monte reste incompréhensible ! Aucune masse n’est détectée… Nous nous faisons surprendre ! Le vent active sa cadence, envoi ses rafales, nous désarçonnes. 40 nœuds, il faut agir vite, très vite et pour ça, je peux compter sur mon capitaine. Il vient de se mettre au portant. 45 nœuds violent. Trop tard pour virer vent de face et baisser la grand-voile, c’est la casse assurée ! J’essaie de gérer mon stress, de ne pas paniquer. Il n’y a pas de raison, Cyril ne fait qu’un avec Blacky, tous les deux tiennent bon le cap. Les étraves sont submergées, notre lion rugi à 17 nœuds. Son avancée est folle. Je prends sur moi, filme pour essayer de me calmer. On aimerait être ailleurs, trouver la bande d’arrêt d’urgence ! Et les éléments continus à se déchainer, le temps devient interminable. À l’intérieur, comme pour me rassurer, notre félin inflexible, atténue le fracas du vent et des vagues. Je nous imagine, tous les trois embullés dans une cloche protectrice. Je me cramponne au pied de mon capitaine, et tout s’accélère, Black lion détale à 19,7 nœuds. Au portant, à 175º du vent, il n’a pas le droit à l’erreur, l’empannage serait malheureux. Je n’aime pas ça. La soif nous tiraille la gorge. À cette vitesse, tout peut vite dégénérer. Et ce vent qui nous pousse vers le Venezuela, vers la côte, les cargos, peut-être même vers des filets de pêche ! Le foc déventé par la grand-voile fasaye. Les alarmes augmentent le stress. La concentration de mon capitaine est à son comble. Et ce grain si imprévisible devient enfin visible sur notre traceur, c’est certain maintenant, il s’est formé juste au-dessus de nous. Puis Éole modère son haleine, il est temps d’essayer de réduire la toile. Sous la lampe de pont, je surveille mon intrépide Amour qui s’est harnaché au mât. C’est impressionnant, ça siffle, ça souffle, ça déferle…Et comme j’aurais aimé que l’on ait les prises de ris directement au poste de pilotage. La poulie de l’enrouleur du foc a cassé, il faut récupérer celle du gennaker et tout ça dans le calme… La tension redescend, on s’en sort bien, il est six heures. Quel affranchissement ! Le vent s’est calmé, nous nous sentons vidés, extenués, mais nous sommes arrivés… Pas de temps à perdre, avant de nous écrouler de sommeil et être totalement libre, nous repartons dans les papiers administratifs d’entrée. Et là, ne cherchez pas la cohésion car il n’y en a pas ! Toutes nos démarches précédentes semblent inexistantes, reste plus qu’à tout recommencer ! Nous sommes vannés. Un coup de vent de nord nous empêche de nous reposer. Mon capitaine a la nausée…. Propelled along by a NW’ly breeze of between 16 and 20 knots, the 90 competitors set sail from Les Sables d’Olonne bound for Santa Cruz de La Palma, with a total of 1,350 miles to negotiate and almost as many obstacles to overcome. Those which will punctuate their passage across the Bay of Biscay specifically are forecast to be relatively complicated and might well have a decisive impact on the next stage of the race. As a result, to hook up with the leading group, the sailors will need to quickly find their sea legs and get into the right groove and, most of all, they’ll have to be nicely in phase with the elements so as to avoid amassing a deficit before the passage around Cape Finisterre. This same headland is where the front runners have a chance of linking onto a big downwind schuss, while their pursuers may well have to deal with rather more uncertain conditions.
