We get hit by a lighting storm as we were anchored at Peel island. Peel Island is a small heritage-listed island located in Moreton Bay, east of Brisbane, in South East Queensland, Between 1907 and 1959 the island was a leper colony. Sailing Life in Maine on a Seawind 1600 - The Most Beautiful Cruising Ground | Harbors Unknown Ep 42 We have settled into sailing life in Maine on our Seawind 1600 catamaran and learned that you must live by nature’s rules out here. The tides and wind dictate everything. We are in awe of it all. From the thickly wooded forests providing endless hiking trails, to the traditional seaside towns, feeding frenzies at the water’s surface and rolling hills serving as a backdrop for Sunday afternoon regattas. Join us as we explore the woods of Vinalhaven, then set off through some of Maine’s most staggeringly beautiful cruising grounds. We took the scenic Deer Island Thorofare, a narrow passage at times only 100 feet wide, leading along the south side of Deer Isle. The passage joins Jericho Bay and East Penobscot Bay and is one link in the chain of inland passages. On the north side is the busy fishing village of Stonington. On the south side are the granite quarries of Crotch Island. Fishing has always been part of Stonington’s heritage, but the town flourished with the granite industry in the late 19th century. Stonington granite built parts of Rockefeller Center, the Smithsonian Institution, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and several New York City bridges, including the George Washington and Triboro. However the granite industry declined and the town returned to its fishing roots. Now the epicenter of the lobster industry, Stonington’s hundreds of lobster boats landed almost 15 million pounds of the crustacean in 2018, more than any other port. Stonington’s identity is that of a year-round working town, a fishing town, an artist’s enclave, a nature-lovers paradise, and a place with a well-preserved, traditional way of life. Before we knew it we were passing the western portion of Mount Desert Island, and soon enough its shapely hills came into view. Thousands of years ago a huge, slow moving, continental glacier over a mile high,... almost 2 miles thick in some places covered the land. When this giant glacier finally melted and retreated, it left rounded and bare mountain tops, elongated ponds and lakes, many boulders, and the seven mile long Somes Sound. At 108 square miles (280 km2), it is Maine's largest island, and 2nd largest on US Eastern Seaboard. The bare hills were a stunning sight and so different from what we’d seen so far. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon so we were greeted by a number of sailboats racing around the harbor. Their colorful spinnakers set on the backdrop of the hills was an absolute treat. Northeast harbor sat nestled in the hills and we slowly made our approach to the mooring field where we would spend the next 5 days. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our @Seawind Catamarans boat, Wanderlust, in September. Die zehn TeilnehmerInnen, sieben davon aus dem NRV Olympic Team, haben Großartiges geleistet und einfach alles gegeben, und das hat sich am Ende ausgezahlt: Sechs Medaillen brachten die Segler und Seglerinnen aus Enoshima/Japan mit nach Haus. Aus dem NRV Olympic Team holte das 49er-Duo Erik Heil und Thomas Plößel Bronze und die 49er FX-Seglerin Susann Beucke ersegelte mit Steuerfrau Tina Lutz (SC Prien am Chiemsee) Silber. Am 13. Pour notre deuxième semaine de vacances, nous partons pour quelques jours de navigation avec le voilier... et le chat. Le vent nous portera jusqu'aux bouches de Bonifacio et même un peu plus loin dans le golfe de Santa Manza. La météo nous jouera quelques tours. La chronologie des images, des séquences ainsi que les informations sur les aides à la navigation, les heures et les vitesses moyennes sur le fond ont été scrupuleusement respectées et vérifiées sur les tables de valeurs générées par le GPS afin de donner une idée générale d’une telle navigation descendante entre Trois-Rivières et Québec pour quiconque voudrait tenter le coup. Cette navigation a été effectuée le 9 juillet 2021. Le marnage était de 4,6 mètres à Québec (Lauzon) et nous avons utilisé un facteur de correction de 0,8 à 1,0 pour l’estimation des courants dans l’Atlas des courants de marées. Nous avons eu un vent sud ouest moyen de 10 nœuds sur la première portion du parcours, jusqu’un peu en aval de Portneuf. Nous avons quitté 10 hrs 30 avant la basse mer à Québec, mais il nous aurait été possible de quitter seulement que 9 hrs avant la BM à Qc, tel que le guide ‘’En suivant le St-Laurent’’ l’indique.
