This week we replace our old stainless steel steering cables with new dyneema line, which means having to do quite a bit of splicing! As we replace the cable and start to tension it, we find that the hull is actually cracked where the steering cable sheaves are, due to the extreme force on them when the bulkheads cracked and the boat bent out of shape! SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage to their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are ready to cross the pacific ocean soon! Con 15 nodi di vento, il trimarano di Soldini ha superato la starting line sulla scia del suo diretto concorrente italiano, il MOD 70 italiano Mana, con gli skipper Jeff Mearing e Loick Peyron, seguito dall’altro MOD 70 in gara, l’americano Argo, con skipper Brian Thompson. Insieme ai tre MOD 70, nella categoria MOCRA hanno preso il via anche il trimarano di 47 piedi italiano Minimole e il maxi trimarano di 80 piedi polacco Ultim’Emotion 2. I modelli meteo preannunciano un vento sostenuto, tra i 25-30 nodi, a nord della Sicilia: «Sarà una regata molto veloce» commenta Soldini, «superato lo Stretto di Messina navigheremo con vento sostenuto in poppa fino a Favignana. Tornati a sud della Sicilia, dovremo capire dove si sposterà il centro della bassa pressione per trovare il vento migliore. Sarà una bella sfida!». Il percorso della regata, di 606 miglia, consiste in un giro in senso antiorario della Sicilia, con partenza e traguardo alla Valletta, passando a nord di Stromboli, a ovest di Favignana e Pantelleria e a sud di Lampedusa. We knew the route from Mexico to Panama would require a lot of motoring and that there was always a possibility we would have to divert course to get more fuel. Traveling during COVID makes these passage decisions even more difficult. Our route to Panama has three potential pit stops for Calico Skies; Cayman Islands, San Andreas, and Providencia. We contacted the Cayman authorities for permission to fuel up with no reply and now travel from both San Andreas and Providencia is banned by the Panamanian government. Decisions Decisions.. With fuel levels running low we opt to sail as efficiently as possible. Bill shows the crew how to reef/unreef Calico Skies, a process that will be repeated many times to maximize forward progress. We decide to press on and aim the bow to start the transit of known pirate waters off the coast of Honduras/Nicaragua.
