Rendez-vous a été pris au Port de Commerce de La Rochelle - La Pallice en octobre dernier. Côté ciel et température, l’ambiance est déjà hivernale. Mais sur les quais, l’activité ne faiblit pas. Nous sommes reçus sur le pont du MV Spuigracht. Cet imposant cargo battant pavillon néerlandais mesure 172 m de long pour 25,49 de largeur. Il fait partie de la flotte de Sevenstar Yacht Transport. Une poignée d’heures plus tard, le navire mettra le cap sur Palm Beach, en Floride. Rental companies are also finding a way, with cargo transport, to quickly move an entire fleet from one base to another. We wanted to know a little more about shipping. Appointment was made at the Commercial Port of La Rochelle - La Pallice last October. When it comes to sky and temperature, the atmosphere is already wintry. But on the quays, activity is not weakening. We are received on the deck of the MV Spuigracht. This imposing Dutch flag freighter measures 564' 3'' (172 m) long and 82' (25.49) wide. From cutting down two massive douglas fir trees, to joining them together, making the yard straight, and putting on iron rings to make it stable, it involves great craftmanship and many hours of hard work. It's been eleven years since Ernesto Bertarelli's Swiss team exited the America's Cup after losing the Deed of Gift match in Valencia. But now the two time Cup winners are back for the 37th America's Cup. And this time they come with the current Formula One world champions, Red Bull Racing on board. Sailing PILAR to Everglades? Refugee Boat - Grounding & Gaters - Port of the Islands - Naples FL After waiting out the Gale and fixing our radar and VHF, we finally set sail again on Tuesday afternoon. Out St Mary's inlet, headed South! We had planned to stop in West Palm Beach to see my daughter for a day, but the 3 day delay due to the Gale changed that plan for us. We waved as we went by around dinnertime, sailed by Miami around midnight, and turned the corner to sail along the Keys. Blue Skies, Blue Water greeted us so we flew our pirate parasailor. Then, right at dusk, what do our wondering eyes does appear, but a wrecked homemade boat drifting not 10 feet from our path. Lucky we were on the foredeck and saw it so we could change course. No sign of life - just a wood hull, styrofoam, tarps - all broken up. We called Coast Guard to have them come and scuttle the boat so no one else would run into it. We reached the turn at Key West in the wee hours of the morning. Still dark, the eager watch crew turned down the wrong channel! So, we had to back it up and lost about an hour:-( Sunrise on our last day turned out a bit cloudy in the Gulf waters with no sailable wind. So, motoring was our choice for the last 8 hours of our trip. Down the Fakahatchee Pass we went, running aground 3 times (low tide). We were told we had to come in at high tide, but timing just didn't work out that way. So, we waited about 3 hours before we could proceed. We reached Port of the Islands Marina in the dark, and slowly inched in to our new dock slip. Happy to be in our new home, but exhausted, we ate our last meal onboard and slept like babies! The next day was boat washing, fixing a few things, exploring the marina and the surrounding waters - oh, and saying hi to a few alligators. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. SAILING SOUTH! Our Longest OFFSHORE PASSAGE Yet (On Our Own) | Harbors Unknown Ep. 51 This week we’re embarking on our longest #offshorepassage EVER on our own on our Seawind 1600 catamaran. We're #sailing south from Solomons Island to Norfolk, Virginia then on to Charleston, South Carolina and finally onto Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. We’re doing two to three day passages to avoid the large storm systems with 50 knot winds moving along the coast. It should have been relatively easy, but an issue with our steering system resulted in 35 hours at the wheel. It’s times like these that you see what you’re really made of. Out on the open ocean we’re challenged in different ways and before this passage I always struggled with night watch. But with no autopilot we had decided to do two hour shifts. Understanding the pressure Fabio felt, it was no problem at all to pull my weight and help shoulder the responsibility of arriving at our destination safely. And the universe rewarded me with spectacular shooting stars, like flairs streaking across the sky, and dolphins leaping out of the water, playing at our bow. Offshore sailing allows you to avoid the distractions of modern day life; no internet, no cell service, giving you the space and time to just be. To be in the present moment, watching the wind in the sails, the cargo ships passing in the distance, observing changes in the water as it turns different shades of blue, sunlight glinting on its crests. Delighting in the different creatures found on board. Watching the sunset and offering gratitude for another magical day spent on the ocean, as the hues transition from golden to pastel. Soon enough we recognized the Fort Lauderdale coastline and knew we had made it. I was so proud of us, for working together, taking care of each other and knew we were truly ready for the full adventure ahead. During this episode we have (what we thought) was a really interesting conversation about negativity and drama in the media (both traditional and social) and whether people are drawn to it innately or if it's more of a learned behavior. This episode we explore from our anchorage at South West Rocks in the Osborne Islands region the Arches, Snake Valley, Apartments, Birds & Buzzard Falls Firstly we check out the "Arches", a set of large natural stone arches that give a very picturesque window looking back over the bay. Taking the tender further east we check out the huge 7m snake Aboriginal Art , before moving to the "Apartments” (also known as Castle Rock). This cave is a series of interconnecting caves formed under a rock outcrop. Just a little further upstream we explore the "Bird Paintings", a row of 24 Aboriginal Art animals. They could be fish, or birds. Some look like penguins. With the rising tide we float the tender up over the rock bar before walking up towards Buzzard Falls. WHO ARE WE? We’re Chris and Jo and we have been living on our Seawind 1260 since January 2019. In our first year we bring our yacht down the east coast of Australia and sail it out to New Caledonia. After cruising further north up the east coast of Australia in 2020, we decide to circumnavigate Australia during 2021 and 2022. We had previously owned fishing and water skiing boats, but after a couple years crewing in South Australia we decided to jump right in and make a sea change. We are just an ordinary Aussies couple exploring what this great world has to offer and hope that we can inspire others just as we were by watching other YouTube channels to follow our dreams.
