We loved taking time off the boat for a road trip around Lanzarote Island in the Canaries. We were impressed with the amazing artistic installations on display around the island. The huge impact made by artist and architect, César Manrique is evident everywhere. 00:00 Darrol on bass 00:16 Downwind sailing 00:38 Welcome to Lanzarote 00:50 How many volcanoes? 03:04 Tour of Lanzarote 03:18 César Manrique 04:03 César Manrique's home in a lava coulee 06:44 La Cueva de los Verdes 08:44 Mirador del Rio 09:48 Misty mountain 11:10 Village church 11:27 Sailing past Fuerteventura 12:05 Darrol on bass

We drop anchor in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, and spend a few days exploring this island of striking contrasts and breathtaking scenery. We're introduced to Portuguese Fado music. This is profoundly moving and expressive music which tells stories of the sea and of the struggle of daily life. We experience an evening in an authentic Fado restaurant, entertained by a family of Fado musicians.
Our epic voyage across the Atlantic begins! We sail 575 nautical miles from Gibraltar to Porto Santo Island in the Atlantic Ocean. In this episode we explore the island and learn about Christopher Columbus who lived here with his wife, Felipa Perestrello, and their son, Diego. We also see evidence of climate change impacting Porto Santo. We learn how small islands are particularly vulnerable to land loss, extreme weather, as well as food and water insecurity due to climate change.

Darrol tackles a horrible problem - black sludge at the bottom of our diesel tanks. Is it diesel bug? The Perkins engine on our Amel Mango yacht stalled while we were leaving Mallorca, with a big ferryboat behind us... We have to clean the tanks.

In this video we leave the Island of Ustica and continue west on our voyage across the Mediterranean Sea. As we sail, we give you a little taste of how we prepare meals on board. 00:00 Leaving the Island of Ustica 00:14 Our anchor is stuck! 02:46 Volcanic Island on Navionics chart 04:09 Making quesadillas for dinner 06:39 How to make Pina Colada Recipe for Vegetarian Quesadillas (You can customise this recipe by using whatever vegetables you happen to have in your kitchen.) Ingredients 2 onions several cloves of garlic 1 sweet potato 2 potatoes 1 red pepper 1 green pepper 1 aubergine 1 courgette (zucchini) 200g fresh mushrooms 1 tin chopped tomatoes 1 packet tomato purée 500g grated cheese (half cheddar; half mozzarella) large tortillas salt and pepper to taste 2T cumin 1T of each of the following: sweet paprika; turmeric; thyme; oregano; basil half to 1t chilli powder pesto sauce if more flavour is needed Sauté the onions and garlic in olive oil. Add the root vegetables that will take longer to cook (sweet potato; potato) Stir and allow to cook for a few minutes, then add the rest of the fresh vegetables, tinned tomatoes and tomato purée as well as the herbs and spices. Set the vegetable mixture aside. Then use the same pan for frying the tortillas in a little butter. I turn the tortilla once to soften both sides and increase the buttery flavour. Add grated cheese to one half of the tortilla. Then pile some of the vegetable mixture on top. (Don't use too much of the mixture or your tortillas will be too squishy to eat with your hands.) Add more grated cheese on top. The cheese acts as glue to keep the whole thing together - and of course it adds lots of cheesy flavour too! Turn the tortilla so that it is fried on both sides. If you have used butter for frying, then you will get a gorgeous, crispy golden-brown colour on the outside. Set aside to cool down before cutting into quarters and serving. Recipe for 2 Pina Coladas Ingredients: 4 or 5 pineapple rings 120ml pineapple juice 120ml white rum 120ml coconut cream 2 large handfuls of ice blocks Pulse all the ingredients in a blender until smooth.
In this episode we sail into Italian waters, visiting the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Vulcano is the island that volcanoes are named after. Ancient Romans believed that this small island was the chimney of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire. Here we find hot springs under the sea, in the shallow water close to the beach. Stromboli is an active volcano. We watched from our boat as red-hot lava spurted into the night air from the top the volcano. 00:00 Arriving at the Italian Island of Vulcano 02:14 Hot springs under the sea, close to shore 03:08 Exploring Nature's jacuzzi 05:03 Leaving Vulcano 05:21 Lipari Island 05:35 Stromboli in the distance 05:59 Stromboli is an active volcano 06:12 Big wave! 06:31 Lifting the dinghy on deck 08:22 Sunset and Moonrise 08:43 Stromboli Volcano erupting! 09:35 Dolphins at the bow 10:38 Getting tongue-tied and catching fish 11:02 Alicudi and Filicudi Islands 12:53 Incredible privilege to be sailing here 12:58 Darrol playing guitar 13:24 Ustica Island 13:55 Good to be Alive! 13:58 Dolphins
It has been almost three months since our last video. We have been SO busy preparing our boat for a major ocean crossing before the end of the year. We can't wait to tell you all about it! We're learning that when you're sailing your plans can change like the wind. In this episode we leave Greece and sail towards Italy, squeezing through the Messina Strait as we head west across the Med. 00:00 Day 1: Leaving the islands of the Ionian Sea in Greece 02:59 Day 2: Fabulous wind and awful seasickness 06:54 Day 3: Preparing to sail through the Messina Strait 07:26 Darrol raises an Italian courtesy flag as we enter Italian waters 08:01 Ice creams at sea! 09:13 Darrol goes au naturel... 10:11 The Messina Strait gets busy 14:17 Dolphins on the bow 16:00 Almost arriving at Vulcano in the Aeolian Islands
In this video we continue the tour of our boat that we started in the last episode. This time we're outside, showing you how everything works. We'll give you an overview of sails, rigging, navigation, machinery, batteries and generating electricity. You'll discover what it takes to live self-sufficiently on our boat for weeks on end. We'll also give you a bit of background information about Mr Henri Amel and the history of Amel yachts. Do you like technical information and specifications? We've tucked some of those into this video as well. 00:00 Welcome to our boat! In this video we take you on a tour of the inside of our boat, giving you a detailed view of our floating home. This episode welcomes you to the living space of our home. Next time we will give you more of the technical information and specifications.
In this video we welcome visitors from Singapore. We have a great time sailing in the Ionian Sea in Greece, visiting Meganisi and the town of Preveza. We also have some fun towing our passengers on ropes behind our boat - seems like a good way to make them beg for mercy!
We are Darrol and Kathy, and our lovely Amel Mango sailboat is called 'Disa' - named after the Disa flowers that grow on Table Mountain in our home city of Cape Town, South Africa. We have spent our first season of sailing in the Mediterranean: island hopping in Greece. It has been a fabulous time! In this second season we have to leave the EU due to our visas running out. But first we have some repairs to do... In this episode we return to our boat after two and a half months in Cape Town. While in Cape Town, Darrol had a chance to play music with his brother, Shane, his talented nephew, Ricardo, and several other musician friends - all of them mostly self-taught, playing purely for fun. Cape Town music has a sound that is instantly recognisable. We believe these musicians nailed it. Do sailors need transit logs in Greece in 2022? (Especially Brits after Brexit)- Sailing Disa S1 E16
We are Darrol and Kathy and our boat is Sailing Disa. We're taking a break in South Africa and reflecting on our first season of sailing. This past year we have met many British sailors in Greece who are just as confused as we were about post-Brexit cruising regulations. In this video we interview our amazing agent in Greece, Sofia Gravani, who helped us to navigate all the Greek laws relating to visas and transit logs. Sofia is extremely well-informed and efficient. After spending two months in Crete, we head north to Lefkas, where a friend has promised to help us install new electronics on our boat. We accidentally destroy our precious camera and end up filming this episode on our phones - well done to our Samsung S9s! We are Darrol and Kathy and our boat is Sailing Disa. It's our first season of sailing and we're having a blast! In this episode winter is fast approaching and we have a long way to go in our Amel Mango, as we sail south along the Peloponnese in Greece. We keep a close eye on weather windows that enable us to hop along the coast before making the crossing to Crete.
