Back to my roots - dinghy racing in Plymouth As most of you know, I have been a professional yacht designer for over 45 years. However I always consider myself to be a sailor first and a designer second. Although I have done a lot of ocean cruising and racing, certainly over 50,000 miles, my real passion is dinghy sailing and - especially - dinghy racing. Indeed, one of the main reasons for leaving N. America and returning to the UK was the lack of dinghy racing in both the US and Canada. I thought this would be an appropriate time for a dinghy sailing post, as it's now 60 years since I first sailed a dinghy single handed. In that time I've sailed most hiking singlehanders (I don't much like trapezing, and since leaving college have rarely known anyone who would dinghy sail with me) In the past, at the extreme end, I've sailed: International 10sqm Canoe, Contender, several "lowrider" International Moths and a Blaze. Plus Europe, OK, Solo etc and of course I've raced Laser and Sunfish. More recently it's been a Byte, Moth, RS Aero and now a RS Vareo. The Vareo was designed over 20 years ago and was one of the first singlehanders to be fitted with an asymmetric spinnaker. So it has a 8.8sqm mainsail (94sqft) plus a 10sqm spinnaker (107sqft). 200sqft of sail area in any wind is hard work when singlehanded and challenging to gybe (which you have to do quite often, since it's an asymmetric spinnaker and thus cannot be sailed dead downwind), but great fun especially in 10 knots of wind under spinnaker when it flies past many nominally faster boats! Clearly, with a mainsheet, tiller and spinnaker sheet to hold, there aren't many hands left for adjusting the kickingstrap (which needs doing every few minutes), cunningham, outhaul and daggerboard. Fortunately I still have all my teeth which helps at times! Of course there's also a LOT of rope in the cockpit, all made slightly more complicated as the spinnaker sheets and kickingstrap are endless, as is the spi halyard/downhaul/pole in-out. Naturally every rope is a different colour, otherwise the "knitting" would be impossible to untangle. As I'm now approaching 70 I'm obviously getting less agile and it also doesn't help to be well under the 90kg optimum weight for a Vareo. However that hasn't stopped me having some success. I was 3rd in the Vareo Nationals (and first Grand Master) and second overall in the 2021 Travellers Trophy. The heading photo shows me leading the fleet at the Inland Championships. 5 minutes later I sailed round the wrong mark and that was that..... I'll probably race the Vareo a couple more years, so this video is just a taster, with more to come once the racing season is underway (first club race is in a weeks time!). Two races a week (sometimes more) from early February to late November. That's very different to the 1960s when few people sailed in the winter and Easter was traditionally the time for the first race. And that's mainly because of better clothing (comfortable wetsuits and drysuits) but also because dinghies are now more reliable and pretty much unbreakable (eg metal not wood masts) and safer (better built in buoyancy, self bailers, transom flaps or, better still, an open transom). Todays popular racing dinghies (Enterprise, GP14, Fireball, Hornet, 505, Finn, Solo, OK etc) were all designed between 1945-65. They are safer now, even though the one design hulls and rigs are the same. In fact the "dangerous" boats today are the classic daysailing cruising dinghies that haven't made similar improvements. I mean the open deck ones, with little buoyancy and no way of easily removing water after a swamping or capsize. A Mk1 Firefly from 1948 is far more dangerous than a modern GRP Firefly despite having the same one design hull. The Mk1 had so little buoyancy that after a capsize the boat was so full of water that the water surface was above the top of the centreboard, so water would leak in almost as fast as you could bail it out with a bucket (been there done that!). See below for more on small boat safety https://www.sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/articles/41-general-articles-technical/477-capsize-demos-talk-at-wbf I'm still considering developing a home build plywood design on similar lines to the Vareo, but for now I just have my 14ft Zest as a home build racing dinghy. More on that here https://www.sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/designs-2/46-beach-cats-and-dinghies/436-zest and video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnQo_ZuKvag which is of the one we built in two days (the build started Friday morning, the video shows me sailing it Sunday lunchtime.) And of course more of my other videos here https://www.youtube.com/user/WoodsDesigns Thanks to drone expert Chris for the video

Really, I think this recipe is the perfect cruiser friendly meal! CUBAN CHICKEN 1 TBSP olive oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped 1 (400g/14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes 1 (340g/12 oz) can chicken chunks, drain broth into a bowl and save for later 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper 1/2 cup dried fruit (cranberries, raisins, apricots, etc.) 1/2 cup green olives, sliced or whole 1 TBSP red wine vinegar 1 tsp ground oregano 1 tsp ground cumin 2 bay leaves 1 cup rice Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Genoa Sail, Urine, and Life Jackets Ep55 We finally got our jib/genoa back from being repaired and put it back on the boat. Karen thought it was a good idea to test our inflatable life jackets and we’ve ordered new replacement cylinders. Although we were planning to work on the AC…we discovered a leak in the Y valve of the VIP head. Bought a new valve and Steve installed it with no leaks, yea! We’ve been on the waiting list for a slip and are happy to report that we actually may have a slip soon. In the meantime, we’re happy to be in the water at our current marina. EP 197: Meeting some bums in the Caribbean.. ⛵ We took a lil trip to Hillsborough right next to Sandy Island to grab some petrol for our dinghy. It is such a cute friendly little town and we thoroughly enjoyed being here although the anchorage was pretty rolly which made us head back to Tyrell bay for some good snoozes. We took a lil stop to visit some cool people.. you might know them as Bums on a Boat.. Joel and Michal. They have been working on their boat in Carriacou so it was a definite that we had to meet each other after chatting online for a bit. It was awesome to hang out with them and spend some time with each other from boat work to some pretty deep conversations. Its always nice when you meet people who understand some of the trials and tribulations boat life can bring but also the joy and freedom of it. We spend new years eve with them jamming some music together and having a good old time but it was time for us to head off and make our way up north to st Vincent and the Grenadines.. #vloggers #lifeatsea #bargingUK #buyingaboat Our life has never been the same since we went sailing for the first time. Being at sea for 3 years living full time on our boat has changed our way of seeing life. So we are experiencing life in so many ways now, taking all the opportunities to enjoy and inspiring people at our age to do the same. Do not stay home guys, go and do something with your lives. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.

After 3 weeks in Beaufort, NC, we were finally all fixed up (from the lightning strike) and ready to make the journey around Cape Hatteras. We were given a good weather window and set off to cross the 36th parallel and make our insurance company happy. We were 4 days late getting this far North. Along the way, we had many firsts - we put up the parasail on our own, caught our first fish (in over 700 NM!!), passed around Hatteras, arrived in NJ, and took a journey up the mast a couple of times to fix the wind instrument. It was a great accomplishment and a sense of relief to arrive in Cape May. Our rush to head North had finally concluded and now we had the freedom to move as we wished versus out of necessity. We hope you enjoy the video of our experience around Hatteras. #sailing #sailboat #sailingprojects #capehatteras #hatteras #capemay #newjersey #capemaynj NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. In this episode we explore some beautiful deserted soft sand beaches on the west side of Yasawa Island, Fiji, then continue eastward. Our goal is to get to the town of Savusavu on the large island of Vanua Levu. Savusavu is a good spot to reprovisioning, so our intent is to get there to provision prior to making our way down to the remote Lau group. On the way, we decide to divert to the Namena Island marine reserve where fishing is prohibited. As a result of the regulations marine life is much bigger than in other areas of the Pacific where we have done dives. There's so much life here around the coral pinnacles it's astounding, and Kevin was able to swim right down into a school of large Sweetlips....who didn't seem scared at all. After two dives at Namena, we carry on toward Savusavu. In this area there are lots of boobies. The sea bird that is. They seem to enjoy using the motion of the boat mast as a playground to test their skills....approaching the antenna on the top of the mast and touching it with their beaks! They also were curious about one of the fishing lures we were towing, and one of the boobies got its leg hooked up in the fish hook. Happy ending though...we managed to reel it in an remove the hook from the leg without injury to the boobie, which flew away to rejoin its copilots. Thanks for following! Grace wanted to visit the mountain highlands of Boquete, Panama since she first saw the immense peaks of Volcan Baru on the horizon and in this episode the first mate finally get’s her wish! The trip begins first with closing the sea cocks to make sure Calico Skies is snug at the marina before we depart. Next, we take two panga boats from Bastimentos island to Isla Colon, and then onward. Because of the steep mountain range that cuts across Panama, our indirect route requires two more legs before arriving into Boquete- First a bus ride through the windy, steep roads of rural Panama followed by a car ride. Finally we arrive and check out the local nightlife during what turns out to be a major festival for the town of Boquete. The next day we hike to a waterfall popular with the locals but not typically visited by tourists. The highlight is swinging off a real vine into the deep, and cool crisp water. Perfectly refreshing on a humid day, our swim is followed by a late lunch in town. Lastly, we sample the coffee grown locally as well as the chocolate, in town. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Enjoying our channel?

I also find out the boat already has a name. She's called "Piglett 2". Whats the chances of buying 2 boats and both are named after Pigs hey?!! Lagoon 50 - SVN presents the Lagoon 50, a catamaran of about 15 meters (14.75 m) and a leading model of the French shipyard Lagoon. Spacious, very stable and sophisticated, the Lagoon 50 is one of the best-selling sailing catamarans of the moment, together with the smaller version, Lagoon 46. To test the boat, we visited the Lagoon testing centre of Cala dei Sardi in Sardinia, managed by NSS Yachting. Onboard with Gabriel Poole was Simone Morelli, CEO of NSS Yachting. https://www.nssyachting.com/programmi-gestione/ Subscribe to SVN, the subscription is free, and you will receive our free digital magazine and technical articles. We head out on a 100 nautical mile round trip and complete our first costal hop. We left from Ipswich marina and headed down the river Orwell and out to the North Sea. We hugged the coast and made our way round to the River Blackwater and finally stopped at an anchorage in Osea Island. We encountered NO wind and thick fog on the way there and had some great sailing on the return leg. It was a little chilly to say the least and Charlie felt a little queasy after sticking her head in a bilge to find something whist it was bumpy... Not a good idea.. but we are still learning. We also had a buddy boat 'Sleepy Shores' with us although the fog meant we lost them as soon as we got to the sea and spent a wonderful night with Caz and Nev. I cooked a Iberico Pork chop, mustard mash and veg with an onion Jus and chocolate fondants for desert... We had an amazing time and learnt a ton... Hope you enjoy the trip with us. Please don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe if you havent already. Thank you Carl & Charlie x
