Magical Misool, Mythical Misool, Misool Madness, whatever way you put it Misool is a pretty special place. Tied bow and stern to jagged cliffs with unblemished coral surrounding us we were certainly in paradise. Totally alone too! Each morning we would dive off the boat naked into this crystal clear water and start our days wondering if we were still in a dream. Ripping around in the dinghy we found an old ladder up a cliff so we followed the path and were led to an amazing small hidden lake. Swimming in there with just the bird song as background music we had a truly special experience. Enjoi! SPECIAL EPISODE - AMAZING FROM AFAR CAMPAIGN (ALL DRONE FOOTAGE COLLECTED UNDER NMFS PERMIT #20605) Hello Friends, This is a special episode shot in December of 2021 where I traveled to the Island of Hawaii to tag along with Kimberly Wood as she worked for the Amazing From Afar Campaign organized by Colorado State University in conjunction with NOAA by the principal investigator for AMA Dr. Katie Abrams. The campaign was designed to help educate the public about the legal distances people must stay away from Hawaii's Spinner Dolphins, Monk Seals and Sea Turtles. The project was launched following the updated restrictions of the new Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) that went into effect in October of 2021. Spinner dolphins hunt and feed at night and retreat to the calm bays of the Hawaiian Islands in the day to sleep. Being conscience breathers they swim slowly in circles as they sleep (with one half of their mind resting at a time). The general public having access to these bays as well unwittingly disturb their sleep and prevent them from rest. This might be done via swimming, paddle board or by guided tours on boats, some of which are respectful of the dolphins are some of which stalk and harass the dolphins making it impossible for them to sleep. Viewing distances have been set by the U.S. federal government. Knowing and following these minimum distances from wildlife not only saves you from legal fines and a guilty conscience, it also protects wildlife, maintains the ecological balance, and shows your respect for the Hawaiian people. Never Get Closer Than: ● 10 feet (3 m) from sea turtles ● 50 feet (15 m) from monk seals ● 50 yards / 150 feet (46 m) from spinner dolphins ● 100 yards / 300 feet (91 m) from humpback whales If you are approached by a spinner dolphin, take immediate action to move away 50 yards. Why might a spinner dolphin approach? Distances apply to all ways in which you or something you control could get close to wildlife no matter where they roam. That includes swimming or paddling (kayak, stand-up paddle board, canoe), operating a motorized vessel, or flying a drone, helicopter, or plane. When sea turtles or monk seals are on land or in shallow tide pools, the distances still apply. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it.

Strangford Lough Yacht Club once again hosted the season ending Frosties Regatta on the picturesque shores of upper Strangford Lough. There were 5 yachts entered in this years IRC 1 regatta, which was down on last year due to the continue impact COVID is having on getting crews together. The racing in this years Frosties Regatta was as close as ever. In the IRC 1 class racing was so extremely tight with boats boats regularly finishing within seconds of each other and the overall series result getting decided on count back when the top two yachts could not be seperated. GTR was back to defend their Frosties title, they were however expecting close competition from two other local boats, HiJacker and Le Basculer. The Regatta was held out of SLYC over 5 weekends with 10 races in total. The series was a classic with 3 different race winners and 3 boats that could still take the title coming into the last day for racing. Yes, it can be avoided and Fred will show you. Another subject that always creates doubts is the valves and registers, which type to use. We leave Bocas del Toro and sail offshore 220 miles to the San Blas islands. We’re headed east and the normally strong easterly winds have left a choppy sea state for us. And, thanks to the current we’re pointed even more upwind than expected. This means a 36 hour bumpy, upwind passage, which is our first offshore sail in almost 6 months . . . welcome back to the ocean!! Thankfully we fall back into the rhythm easily, sharing watches over the passage. Once we get closer to the Panama Canal we keep a sharp lookout for tankers which are everywhere in this area. We navigate the traffic separation zone coming within half a mile of a giant ship. Besides a choppy sea state we’re treated to two beautiful sunsets and a bright full moon. Bill’s figured out how to get the local charts downloaded electronically using Open CPN and we’ve got our a wine glass filled with water propped against the inside of Calico’s hull, which is able to transmit the sonar beam and work as a depth sounder since ours is broken. That means we are able to safely navigate reefs in the blackness of night when we arrive, and get a few hours of sleep on anchor until daylight.
