The second day of the inaugural event in Sofia of BORA Sailing Championship'2022, delivered steadier and stronger winds. We saw planning boats, and light broaches as well. A total of 10 races were conducted, leaving a tight competition on the top of the leaderboard. The first 4 teams are one point apart of each other. The third and last day of the event is ahead, with final series planned for deciding who is going to win the first ever BORA Sailing Championship event in Sofia.

We decide to sail through a labyrinth of uncharted reefs while trying to explore a traditional Kuna Village! After weeks of exploring the outer islands we get word of a Kuna Independence Celebration, and apparently it's cool if we rock up and join the festivities. So we pull up the hook and set sail East to Isla Tigres, a Kuna Village of about 1,500 people. After a very sporty sail through a bunch of reefs we arrive to find the celebration starting early in the morning. It's a full on reenactment of the battle that gained the Kuna People their autonomy from the Panamanian government and a very interesting story. We learned a lot and hope you do too! There isn’t much better than getting out and sailing the world’s oceans on a well-founded sailboat. But which brand of boat should you get to fulfil this dream, with so many choices available? With all their logos and flags, boat manufacturers would like you to think that buying and owning a boat is like buying and owning a car. I’m going to explain why it’s not, and how you should approach buying a boat. Big car manufacturers can make hundreds of thousands of cars every year, and have the scale to make, or provide detailed specifications to third party manufacturers for most parts of the car. Much of the manufacturing process is highly automated, so there is a high degree of consistency amongst cars that came off the production line days or even months apart. They also have local dealerships and service centres which are a big part of the ownership experience. In other words, they are largely responsible for all aspects of the success or failure of any particular car. Even the biggest boat manufacturers only make hundreds of boats each year, much of the work is done by hand. They are also very reliant on third party manufacturers for pretty much everything that isn’t the hull. Pretty much everything that makes these boats function reliably comes from a third party, and not the boat manufacturer. If anything fails you don’t go back to the boat manufacturer, you go to a local boatyard which will be reimbursed by the manufacturer if it’s a warranty job. The same boatyard will serve all manufacturers. They will also repair all the attached components, so there’s very little reliance on the original manufacturer. In many ways, buying a boat is much more like buying a house than a car – you look at the layout, how well the previous owner has cared for it, and what equipment is installed. You look for the best fit for your lifestyle and how you plan to use it, regardless of the builder, and you should do the same for a boat. Now that I’ve said the manufacturer doesn’t matter, there are a few areas where it really does, but not for the reasons you’d expect. Owners of boats from larger production runs tend to form amazing support communities, where you can ask any question about your boat, and somebody else has likely encountered that problem and solved it. For example, there are more than 1,000 Catalina 42s and a very robust owner support network, which can help you solve pretty much any problem imaginable. On the other hand, you may find yourself feeling isolated and somewhat struggling with various issues on one-off custom builds, or smaller production runs, even if they are technically better built. Boats with larger production runs also tend to be much easier to sell, because there is a larger market looking for them, in large part because people feel more confident in having something to compare to when buying. One-offs and smaller production boats can sit on the market for months or years because buyers tend to be afraid of them. But they really shouldn’t if they approached buying a yacht more like a house than a car. So if you’re asking which brand of sailing yacht is best, you’re essentially asking the wrong question. The question you should be asking is “What layout is best for how I intend to use the boat, and which makes and models of yachts meet that criteria. An even more important question might be “What kinds of installed equipment do I need?” and the answer to this has much more to do with the previous owner than the manufacturer. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. In a significant act of vanity, we're making YouTube video of our sailing exploits. In 2021, we sailed our Balance 526 Catamaran from Cape Saint Francis, South Africa to the island of Grenada in the Caribbean on a 30 day passage. Since then, we've been sailing up the islands exploring beautiful anchorages and meeting great people. Over the next few years, we'll be sailing through the Bahamas, San Blas, Panama, and across the Pacific. With any luck, eventually we'll sail around the world. We're from Santa Cruz, California and grew up in and around the water. This is our third catamaran (we also had a Seawind 1000 and Catana 431) and eight boat (fishing boats, monohulls... boats tend to take over sometime!). St Helena to Brazil 🌊🤍☀️🇧🇷 This leg of our trip was pretty much like the previous - we had awesome calm, sunny peaceful days and then there were days we hope to forget. The squally stormy days were not quite as bad as we had experienced at the start of the trip but they were horrible enough! 🌧🌊 We had engine failures, propeller issues and solar issues but we made it through with an equal amount of beautiful memory making days. We had a visit from a beautiful seabird - the jury is still out, we think he was a red footed booby but we aren’t sure - we called him Bernard and he stayed with us for 100’s of miles through squall and sunshine. We were sad to see him go as we approached Fernando de Noronha. The trip from St Helena to Fernando was quite uneventful into the night before getting to Fernando - we were trying to slow down to only approach the anchorage in daylight but with the storm that rolled in, we overshot the island and had to fight our way back the following morning. We were safely anchored by 3.30pm just in time to make it to the harbour master to check in. The clearing in process was easy in quick. We had decided to only spend the night in Fernando and get straight back to the ocean to cross to Cabedelo. We were exhausted and wanted to get settled somewhere we knew we would really be able to relax. Leaving Fernando de Noronha the next morning to what seemed to be perfect weather predictions soon proved to be nothing but. The swell, wind direction and current seemed to be pretty much opposite to what was predicted. Something chord by probably every sailor we have spoken to since getting here. They all experienced the same conditions. What we weren’t expecting was the squalls that were to become a way of life for the next few days. Watch the video to see what engine, solar and propeller issues we faced along the way. Coping with the squalls exhausted us all, but again, we live and learn, gain more experience and confidence in our beautiful Saoirse. Now safely in Cabedelo, Brazil, it is still almost surreal to think of the distance we have sailed - 3501nm to be exact, and to know that we are sitting on another continent around the other side of the world to home in South Africa.

Exploring the Montebello Islands we checkout Alpha Island, site of the third and largest nuclear bomb ever detonated in Australia. We climb the short hill to get better phone coverage and fly the drone to get a birds eye perspective over the remarkable island chain, before snorkelling and spearfishing to catch some cray and coral trout. Heading out to the outer reef edge we catch a couple massive crayfish, before we get a visit from a HUGE HAMMERHEAD SHARK.
