We have to figure out what the floor level should be above the battery box that we are building in our bilge for 8 LiFePo4 batteries (4 x 120Ah and 4 x 300Ah) that will drive our electric motor as well as the inverter for cooking etc. Once we have the batteries installed and connected we can move onto the solar generation. We have unique plans for that as well :-) Also in here is our learning about ANL vs Mega fuses which caused another change of plan. This was a few days of faster progress as Jane has joined me for a week (half term), I wonder how far we will get this week! With about 11-13 knots of wind we sailed from Vlieland to Makkum on May 8, 2022. When you sail away from Vlieland, you sail through the Stortemelk. This is located between Vlieland and Terschelling. Here we could, with a lot of current, sail wonderful. I found a lot of clips very cool, so shortening was not possible for me. Hence almost 10 minutes of wonderful sailing on our fantastic sailing yacht 'Windfinder', a Hallberg-Rassy 48 Mk II from 2016. I hope you enjoy this footage. (In good resolution this time.) Hello! In this video, we continue discovering Tenerife. Mountains, rainforest, scuba diving, wildlife, surfing, culture, history? This island seems to have it all. We only really scratched the surface of everything you can do here but we fell in love with the island and enjoyed discovering new gems whilst we were there. (If you watch video Ep. 54 on Tenerife, you can see even more!) We hung around the island for a couple of weeks whilst we were waiting for our new lithium batteries to arrive. We provision the boat one final time in Europe and get on top of our boat preparations, including replacing our old lead acid batteries with new lithium batteries and we sail to our final stop of the Canaries and Europe: La Gomera. The sun shade has held up well, 5 years later and still protecting us from the Florida sun. This sun sail only takes us a few minutes to setup, providing us with a breeze cool porch. We can even take it down faster in case of popup storms or nosey HOA board members are lurking. With our HOA, they be like, rule say this can stay for 72 hours, well it's removable, it's back up the next day. During the last 2 months we were running 3 trips in a row: Sorong-Ambon, Ambon-Ambon and Bau Bau-Labuan Bajo. In this video you can see some of the highlights from from these trips around Raja Ampat, Triton Bay, Banda Sea, Wakatobi and Komodo. We had majestic whale sharks, beautiful soft corals, incredible reef scapes, beautiful walls, amazing critters and of course, plenty of fish. Our last one was an exploratory trip around Wakatobi islands and Komodo. It was a blast! It was perfect conditions for the start of the Royal Western Two-handed Round Britain and Ireland Race. Six Multihull Centre boats including four Dazcats, and a Belgian Marsaudon Composites TS42 'Kahu' (it was good to meet Michael & Ian earlier, the outside competition!). The fleet got off to a great start on leg one to Galway in Ireland. A good south easterly and they made it down to the Lizard in no time, with Morpheus firmly leading. In todays episode, we sail around the final cape of the Pelopennese, in the calmest seas and winds possible to avoid any problems. Well, obviously things didn't go to plan. While motor sailing in 5 knots of wind, we hear a massive rip, look up, and in absolute disbelief, we sail our sail has ripped. From this point we really didnt have the motivation to film everything, so we pack away the sail, explore Monevasia (which has to be one of the most beautiful places we have been) and continue our journey to get the sail repaired! We are unable to anchor in the bay next to Victoria Settlement so we anchor in the bay opposite, which is a long tinnie ride, but Peanut is built for it. At 6am we motor over to the other side of Port Essington and make our way, by foot, to Victoria Settlement. It’s an eerie feeling walking on tracks which were walked on over a 100 years ago by the early settlers. We take our time and have a good look around. Here we share what we found and Mavi shares too. Seeing a red kite soaring high in the sky hunting or being opportunistic is a true delight! Once a very rare bird, hunted close to extinction in the UK, thanks to successful reintroduction projects, these wonderful birds can now be seen in lots of places in the UK. The M40 corridor was one of the first re-introduction sites for these birds of prey. They are quite like the common Buzzard, but the red kite has more angled red wings that are tipped with black and a beautiful forked tail. Sometimes they can be seen hunting for food, but mostly red kites are in fact largely scavengers or flying high looking for opportunities, roadkill, newly fledged birds, and small prey like rabbits. Listen out for their ‘mewing’ calls, when the sun is shining and warm thermals help them soar high in the skies. Longer than my normal short films, not sure if it drags on a little? The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option.
