Our winter season in the Bahamas comes to a close. Just a bit more fishing and diving and then we set sail on the 600 mile passage north to Beaufort North Carolina. We have a mixture of strong winds with big seas, and later no wind at all before the wind fills in a bit and carries us back to the U.S.

Distance covered in 5 hours: 35 miles Departure Sunday, May 29 – 06:15 a.m. Weather: drizzly and around 17 degrees Wind: NW, 20-16 kts According to the calculations, we want to be in front of Brünsbuttel lock (50 miles) by 2pm at the latest for optimal use of the current with us. Assuming an average of about 8 knots (current and tailwind), we’d prefer to sail out no later than 06.30. So set the alarm for 5.30. (Yes, we know it’s a holiday, but just don’t quite get it right). At 6.00, an ‘innocent passer-by’ walks by who is prepared to cast off all four lines and, because we sail away at low tide, towers over 3 metres above us from the quay. And so we are off (accelerated) at 06:00. In port, we tidy up everything (lines and fenders) and sail out. The bag with ‘grab food’ and a jug of tea are ready. So out at 6.15 and ‘ahead of the pack’ we sail towards the Elbe in heavy clouds and occasional ‘drizzle showers’. A smooth ride despite still some waves after so many days of strong winds (even though it is still blowing a small 5 bft, but you don’t notice that much when it comes from behind). At the system on the river we report on channel 16, are greeted and requested to go to channel 18 after the crossing and then follow the radio traffic as entertainment “Hello skipper of the ….., I see you passing me by on the port side which is all super, but please give me a little more room according to the rules and regulations” and “Captain of the ….., if you are not speeding up, please allow me to pass you at your starboard side” Answer: ” Hello Skipper, no problem, I cannot speed up, so be my guest”. Replied by: “Okay, no problem, we’re no speedboat either, so it may take a while to pass you by”. 😉 As Patty is still suffering from a headache and dizziness, Robin gets a request if we could still please check at Cuxhaven to see if there is a spot for the WJ. A relatively short sailing day seems like a good idea to Pat. Given the drizzly weather, it’s no punishment to berth earlier and fortunately, Cuxhaven, so familiar to us, has a place at the entrance…..Cost €70. We have power, so we do the laundry, tidy up a bit, try to puncture the dirty water drain again to improve the flow, work on the reports and videos for the youtube channel, watch Max’s race and have a nice dinner at the harbour restaurant…. Tomorrow around 08.00 we will set sail for the Kieler Canal…..(North East Channel from Brunsbuttel tot Kiel) #cuxhaven #sailing #germany

Nous avons la visite d'une amie, qui est venue nous voir trois jours. Une navigation paisible, Medelys avancée en moyenne entre 4 et 5 noeuds, ce qui nous correspond amplement. il y a eu de l'action ! oui, oui, 60 kmh de vent s'en prévenir, d'un coup ! pour nous c'était costaud. Siamo in procinto di lasciare la Nuova Zelanda per le Isole Fiji (FINALMENTE!), siamo impegnati a preparare la barca e a controllare costantemente la meteo (che purtroppo non è per niente buona), il tempo stringe 😊 Nel penultimo video della serie "prequel" navighiamo da Maupihaa a Palmerston, un atollo appartenente alle Isole Cook, quindi facciamo una breve tappa a Beveridge Reef, un micro-atollo nel mezzo del nulla, e atterriamo a Niue. 📌 PALMERSTON - ISOLE COOK: un atollo in cui vivono i discendenti di William Marsters stabilitosi con le sue 3 mogli nel 1863. La pass non è accessibile alle imbarcazioni così le tre famiglie Marsters hanno predisposto alcuni gavitelli sul lato sottovento dove le barche possono sostare. A Palmerston gli equipaggi vengono "adottati" dalle famiglie Marsters e diventano parte della comunità. Un'esperienza unica. 📌 BEVERIDGE REEF: un-micro atollo in mezzo al nulla, malamente segnalato sulle carte, 130 miglia da Niue. Un anello corallino che racchiude acque trasparentissime dalle incredibili sfumature turchesi. Ci fermiamo solamente una notte perchè con l'alta marea la barriera viene sommersa a sufficienza per creare un'incredibile maretta all'interno e si balla molto. 📌 NIUE: è una makatea, cioè un raro atollo corallino "elevato" sulla superficie del mare. E' un'isola circondata da acque trasparenti, abitata da genti meravigliose e in libera associazione con la Nuova Zelanda. A causa della profondità delle sue baie e della complessità delle sue coste, l'unico ancoraggio sicuro è alle boe nella Baia di Alofi (la capitale). Avremmo voluto fermarci una settimana, ma il rapido deterioriarsi delle condizioni meteo a causa di una profonda depressione ci ha costretti a scappare velocemente verso Tonga. After a quick stop in Crotone we embark on our final leg in Italy to check out at the Port of Brindisi and then onto Montenegro. Hoping for wind to set the sails, but alas, it wasn't meant to be and we are glad to have a trusty motor to take us there instead.

This week I've gotten a few odd jobs done, and I'll talk you through the survey report. The news wasn't great, but it could have been a lot worse! I'm off work this coming week so I'm planning some canal exploration by foot - I'll hopefully get some footage of water, wildlife, and a cafe or two 😉
