Another epic day at Ni'ihau! While there weren't many sharks around, the monk seals were very active and curious. We got to witness one of the longest monk seal fights (to defend territory) I've ever seen plus the usual awesomeness of critters and bathymetry.

We welded in two large patches last year but couldn't do any more welding over the winter months. Our journey began with travels around Australia and Southeast Asia with friends who wanted to share in the adventure. We then took the plunge and quit our jobs to spend a year traveling with just the three of us. The trip began with us backpacking through Asia, exploring Thailand, the Philippines, China, and Japan. We saw wild animals, bought our own Filipino fishing boat, slept on deserted islands, and spent time with locals. Next, we road tripped around Europe, stopping anywhere that piqued our interest. We drove Italy’s Amalfi Coast, did Yacht Week in Croatia, danced at Tomorrowland and Ultra Europe, and explored Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and England. Now we’ve started our next adventure - traveling the world aboard our Leopard 45 catamaran, sailing vessel Liger. This Feadship is an excellent example that after 55 years a ship can still look as if she was launched yesterday. Literally everything on the boat is original and where necessary adapted to modern times without losing her old character. In 2020, a major re-fit took place and the entire hull was blasted and provided with a new paint system. The superstructure was also completely stripped and rebuilt in 2020. This Feadship has been in a boathouse all her life and is in concourse condition. Nach mehr als dreieinhalb Jahren in der Türkei wollen wir endlich gen Westen segeln. Im Idealfall sehr weit in den Westen. Über den Atlantik. Doch der erste Schritt ist immer der schwierigste. Die Abfahrt. Und der Abschied. Und immer noch haben wir keine Gewissheit, ob die Griechen Arzums deutschen Aufenthaltstitel akzeptieren werden, da zwar nicht der Status wohl aber das Datum auf dem Dokument abgelaufen ist. Den Antrag für das neue Dokument haben wir Anfang Februar gestellt. Seitdem stellt sich das Amt stumm und taub. Erst Corona, dann der Ukraine-Krieg, da mahlen die Mühlen in den Amtsstuben noch ein Mal langsamer. Wir wollen aber nicht noch länger warten. Also feiern wir Abschied in der Marina von Kas und setzen die Segel. Naja, erstmal nur das Groß. Denn es wehen uns 35 Knoten auf die Nase. Nicht gerade der beste Start.

Nach einer schweren Krebserkrankung starte ich einen Neuanfang im Leben. Ich nehme mir eine unbefristete Auszeit unter Segeln und mache einen Segeltörn mit meiner Segelyacht, einer Bavaria 37 Cruiser, Richtung Mittelmeer und vielleicht noch viel weiter... komm mit und begleite mich zu den schönsten Spots der Welt, der Segeltörn führt über die Nordsee, durch den Ärmelkanal, die Normandie zur Bretagne und von da über die Biscaya. In dieser Folge habe ich endlich mal Crew an Bord, trotzdem schaffen wir unser Etappenziel Boulogne-Sur-Mer nicht und müssen in Calais rein.

As a rookie sailor, going through the Kurushima Strait and under the famed Kurushima Kaikyou Bridge (reportedly the world`s first triple-span bridge in the world) had my attention for several days. I knew I had to pass under the bridge at slack tide to avoid the whirlpools that form. As it turned out, I arrived a tad early. After 4 hours of cruising in low visibility, the fog began to lift and as I turned into the channel the bridge came in sight. The turbulence was modest as I passed under the bridge. A hundred minutes later, I cycled over the same bridge. In that short time, the tide had changed and the incoming current was already at 4.5 knots and whirlpools were forming.
