We only have 9 days left! Our Visa is running out and we have to make it to Rhodes before the harsh northern Meltemi wind hits! Can we make it? If you like to be part of our journey, please consider becoming a Patreon @ https://www.patreon.com/svcuba We lift the anchor in Santorini and sail to Rhodes to the east because in less than 10 days we have to leave the EU. The Meltemi winds are notorious, but we have no choice but attempt to hop to Karpathos, a tiny needle-like island and then try to sail to Rhodes where we can check out. Just hours before we arrive to Karpathos the Meltemi pushes up big waves behind us and gusts increate to over 35 knots. 5 Meter waves created by a shallow shoal outside make our sail a rollercoaster ride and just before sunset we manage to anchor in the lee of the tiny island. It does not offer much protection from the relentless northern wind and none of us manages to catch any sleep. The strong winds create a vortex effect on the mountains. Our anchor is wedged tightly between big rocks so with each hurling gust the boat gets slammed from side to side like a flag in a storm. The sound of the snubber lines in the bow make it sound as if the front of the boat is ripping off any second. But just the next day the weather forecast predicts that the winds die down just long enough for us to jump over to Rhodes island. Here we take the opportunity to explore the historic harbour where the colossus of Rhodes, at least supposedly, once stood. It has been my (Salsa’s) childhood dream to come to this place and search for the remnants of this mighty statue. Unfortunately, where I would suspect to find traces of this wonder of the ancient world, only two columns with deer statues stand today. Therefore, we continue our exploration of the old town for more historic facts, local information and some laughs along the way to unwind from the long sail that laid behind us. Rhodes will also be the last stop for our crew Shyah, who has sailed over 1000 nautical miles in only 2 months joining us on SV CUBA. Thank you Shyah, for being part of our journey. SAILBOAT REFIT - the rebuild begins! We've only got 2 weeks left before our deadline to go back into the water in order to avoid staying in Fiji for another cyclone season. But before we can do this we need to finish the jobs on our to do list. In the last couple of videos we show all the interior fibreglass work being finished along with the mammoth task of grinding, sanding and painting the entire interior. Winter sailing in the Mediterranean! On this video we set out to sail 1645 nautical miles across the Mediterranean Sea in winter without going ashore and begin what ends up being 28 days onboard our sailboat. With no Schengen visa time remaining we cannot enter any Schengen country along the way but we intend to exercise our right of innocent passage through territorial waters in order to keep us safe should weather stop us on our way. We had sailed to Gibraltar in March 2022 after leaving our winter berth in Portugal, fully intending to stay for around a week however we ended up staying a month. Unending easterly winds down the Alboran Sea kept us there initially and then, after Kate popped back to the U.K. for a visit, we both tested positive for covid and were too unwell to make a weather window. Whilst waiting for another weather window we were hit by a particularly bad Saharan sandstorm - a “Calima” which combined with rain led red rain and mud caking the boat. We eventually got a 3 day weather window which would allow us to at least make it as far as the Mar Menor - the first protected anchorage we’d identified on our journey, should it be needed - and so we finally left Gibraltar, picking our way through the “bait ball” of huge ships that occupy the Alboran Sea. We had initially hoped that the weather would allow us to make a 10 day continuous passage but unfortunately more easterlies were forecast around the bottom of Sardinia meaning we would have to head for the straits of Bonifacio increasing our passage time. Then, as we got nearer to land to pick up an updated forecast the wind died forcing us to head towards the Mar Menor and look to anchor until the wind returned. At the 2022 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, OceanTV spoke exclusively with Trenton Gay, CEO at Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM). Trent spoke of how GCCM weathered two years of COVID restrictions, relying on a local boom in boating, and is now looking forward to welcoming back owners, Captains and crew from all over Australia, New Zealand, the Asia-Pacific and international vessels. Among other topics were the 2032 Olympic Games and 2027 Rugby World Cup and how such events will attract yachts Down Under. Trent was very enthusiastic about GCCM's expansion plans and investment in its workforce and Marine Trades Academy to accommodate this rise in superyacht visitation.
