Go get your own here- https://bchrbox.co/EXPEDB4L Our Paddleboards! - https://amzn.to/3yBgwhj This week’s adventure included soaking up the heat while motoring from Nassau to the Exumas in the clear, glassy water, playing on the deserted Lobster Cay, seeing lots of adorable hermit crabs & thimble jellyfish, trying out our new paddle boards, and exploring Pablo Escobar’s sunken drug plane! First things first, we grabbed Jade’s mom from the airport in Nassau - this was her first time sailing with us and she picked it up like a champ! We planned to check out the Exuma Islands to give mom a full-on sailing experience, but with very little wind we ended up motoring a lot of the way there. We set anchor at Lobster Cay and inflated our new paddleboards from Isle Paddleboards for the first time. Inflating them was a bit more difficult and took longer than we anticipated, but once inflated they were super easy to navigate and so much fun! We plan on leaving them inflated on the rack on the boat. We paddled ¼ of a mile against the current to get to Lobster Cay. Dingo and Penny tagged along and kept switching places between the boards, knocking one of us off of them from time to time. Dingo especially loves paddleboarding. When we got to the beach we had the place to ourselves! There were loads of cute little hermit crabs, and no mosquitos - so lucky! After getting back to the boat, we had a quick salad for lunch and planned to motor out to a sunken plane at Norman’s Cay. While motoring, we ended up dipping out into the Atlantic side of the islands and had just enough wind for some light sailing - woo! It felt so good to finally sail after being in the breeze-less heat for so long. Mom took to sailing like a natural. After waiting for the crowd to die down, we set out to snorkel around the sunken drug plane. Jade scraped her butt on some coral, and Brett got caught in a cloud of jellyfish and got stung quite a bit - because what’s an adventure without a little mishap? To make things even more exciting, a storm started to roll in and lightning began hitting the water around us. Leaving Monkey Mia we sail around the spectacular headland of Cape Peron North with it's incredible red and white sand dunes. As we approach Denham we have a couple of playful dolphins play at our bow. After refuelling with jerry cans and a quick look around Denham, we head across Shark Bay to Dirk Hartog Island and down Blind Strait dropping anchor at Shelter Point. Leaving in the dark, we head around Steep Point and south towards Geraldton. Dodging fish farms, ships and countless cray pot floats, we arrive in Geraldton where we visit the Geraldton Museum where we had been keen to see Batavia exhibition. The eight teams and their high performance one design RC44 yachts were eased gently into the regatta. We bezoeken de Îles du Salut, een kleine eilandengroep voor de kust van Frans Guyana. Die groep bestaat uit drie eilanden, Île Royale, Île Saint-Joseph en het kleinste maar het bekendste Île du Diable (Duivelseiland). Vooral het bezoek aan de voormalige gevangenissen is indrukwekkend. Na dit bezoek zeilen we door naar het vasteland van Frans Guyana, Saint Laurent du Maroni, waar we hartelijk ontvangen worden door David van de kleine marina aldaar. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen. The foremast blank is nearing completion, the engine exhaust elbow gets changed for a nice new stainless one and I do some initial experiments with working with G10 to make backing plates. This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat.
