We are going nuts! 🥥🌴 What happened to our chartplotter? We are still in Brazil. It seems brazil is not wanting us to leave at the moment. We were meant to leave about 3 weeks ago. We were going to be leaving with two other yachts from Marina Jacare Village. We ran around 3 days prior to leaving making sure the yacht was ready and we were provisioned. The day before we were meant to leave we noticed that the chartplotter had a funny colour to it. We took pictures, posted them on Facebook sailing groups and emailed Raymarine. The longer the screen was left on the faster it was fading. We had the chart plotter on the day before and it was working perfectly. We were still able to mirror the chartplotter to our phones and when it was mirrored to our phone the display on the phone was perfect so we are hoping it is just an LCD screen problem. We had an old iPad as back up for navionics and when we tried to get it up and running it didn’t seem to want to work. We think the software is too outdated. We then opened the wall on which the tv is on, the wiring for the chart player is in the wall behind the tv. While we were checking all the wiring the tv was damaged. That was our third option for mirroring the chart plotter to that was now broken. After all of this happening in the space of 3 hours we were ready to give up. ❕Our chartplotter was on the blink ❕We had smashed our TV ❕Our back up IPad was not working And the tensions were running high. We decided to postpone our trip by a day and sort out buying a new Samsung tablet that would be able to mirror the chart plotter and work our navionics. That same evening Robin started getting very sick with covid like symptoms. We went and bought the Samsung tablet and the second evening Karen got sick. We didn’t want to start our trip up the coast of Brazil with two very sick people on board so we took each day as it came and figured when they started getting a bit better we would leave. After 4 days of being bedridden we had missed our weather window. It is now Brazils windy and rainy season and it’s come in with a force. There is big winds up and around the north east of Brazil. For now we are looking for the best possible gap to take. It’s not going to be the perfect weather window like we had hoped for but we will choose a safe enough one. After a week in bed we decided to take a walk down to the beach, find some coconuts and spend some time in the sun. We are feeling so frustrated with everything that seems to go wrong on Saoirse, financially it’s cutting into our cruising budget immensely. But, we are also seeing these set backs as signs from the universe because if we had left with the two other yachts there would have been 2 very sick people on board to worry about. 🥘🫕🥙🥘🫕🍆🧅 EGGPLANT “MEAT” BALLS 3 x eggplants 1 x onion 1/4 cup water Salt 1 teaspoon of Coriander pesto 1 teaspoon fresh garlic 2 teaspoons dry herbs 1 - 2 cups Bread crumbs (depending on how wet your ingredients are 2 eggs 1/2 a cup bread crumbs 1/2 a cup tapioca starch 1/2 a cup all purpose flour Cube the eggplants, place in a pot. Add 1/4 cup of water, add 3/4 teaspoon of salt . Put the lid of the pot on to lock in the steam. Stir every 4 minutes until the eggplant is all cooked. Chop the onion up into quarters , add to eggplant for 5 minutes and then use a blender to blend the onion up. When blending the eggplant I used a few pulses on the blender. I didn’t want the eggplant to become pasty I just wanted the chunks to be smaller. Let ingredients cool to room temperature. Add the eggplant and onion to a bowl, add the coriander, garlic, dry herbs. Mix all together. The. Start adding your bread crumbs a quarter cup at a time and stirring in-between until you reach a consistency that you can roll into a ball and it holds its shape. Whisk your two eggs in a bowl. Add the bread crumbs, tapioca starch and all purpose flour to a separate bowl to the eggs. Dunk each ball into the egg mixture then the dry mixture. Fry the balls in shallow oil until each side is golden and crispy. Remove from pan, place on paper towel to absorb excess oil and serve. 🍔We had a few left over so we made burgers with them the following night, they were delicious!

In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we are joined by two of our Patrons, Bryan and Denise. We visit Phaselis, an ancient coastal trading city in Turkey where 100 ton cargo ships would dock en route between Greece, Syria and Egypt. Then come with us as we hike up a mountain at Yanartaş and see flames which constantly burn from vents in the rocks. A truly amazing natural phenomenon! Leaving the anchorage around sunrise we head away from Turkey towards the island of Rhodes and Greece. Its not the passage we hoped for but we eventually arrive battered and windswept to calm seas. After checking in we visit the old town and have that all important pork gyros we have craved since our last visit to Greece 3 years ago! With winds forecast of over 30 knots we book into Mandraki Marina for three days before once again heading off this time towards Tilos. After a long passage we drop the anchor in Livadia just overnight then head up to the top of the island to a lovely anchorage at Plaka. It's then onwards to Astipalea, one of our favourite Greek islands! Because I’m in the NW mainly and doing a lot of trail camping I didn’t want an AC hanging off the back or sticking up to high on the top so I decided to install it so its easily removable. I can install it in less than a minute and when It’s not hot enough out I can leave it at home.

In 1940 she was chartered by author John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts for a marine specimen-collecting expedition in the Gulf of California. Steinbeck’s book about their journey, The Log from the Sea of Cortez, is considered one of his most important works. After a hard life of fishing, the Western Flyer sunk and was left for dead… until a marine geologist named John Gregg stepped up and purchased the boat. The Western Flyer arrived in Port Townsend in 2015 and since then has been painstakingly rebuilt and restored by the Port Townsend Shipwrights Coop.
