Marine Refugia Story The member countries of the United Nations have agreed to protect 30% of the oceans by 2030. So far, we have 3.7%. So we have a far way to go. Fishers in local communities often reject the idea of protected areas. As we get closer to the shore, we have competing interests between conservation groups and people who make a living from fishing. Our goal is to show how a protected area helps the local people. We coordinate with NGOs to share the results of our research with fishers to help them design their own marine protected areas. With Dr. Alfredo Giron, the video was taken in the Sea of Cortez/Gulf of California. Dr. Alfredo Giron is a scientist who leads trips aboard Quino el Guardian Liveaboard. Quino is part of the Mexico Liveaboards fleet taking divers to the magical destinations of the Sea of Cortez and Socorro.

Ocean had the chance to sit down with Angela Burlizzi and Andrea Gambacorti from Analu at the 2022 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show to chat about what happens when architecture meets fashion. In this episode we sail from the Dominican Republic to Bonaire where we end up again with a broken engine and sail. Happily the custums decide I am allowed to stay a couple days to fix everything before Jip flys to the Netherlands and I will sail single hand from Bonaire to Curacao while Jip attends the biggest hardstyle festival in the world called Defqon1. Also Jip shows us his place in the Netherlands and his dogs, cats, hamsters, chickens and more!! Another episode where all aspects of our life at sea pass by. This week we actually get to sail along the ICW! We couldn’t be happier….no swell and perfect conditions means a beautiful sail along certain areas of the Intracoastal Waterway! This is definitely an amazing way to travel up the East Coast of the United States! We leave Georgetown behind and head to Wrightsville Beach, NC! We set off from the Telos islands planning an overnight sail with the full moon. The glassy seas soon become a rough sail with little sleep as we arrive to the Mentawais town of Tua Pajet. Ruined from the sail, we need time to recooperate before continuing on. With an empty freezer, Yosh heads out spearfishing and returns with the biggest Mangrove Jack he has ever speared!! Continuing south once again, we anchor in a bay where only weeks before a surf charter vessel dragged anchor and got smashed up on the reef. Another shipwreck in this area....
