BOAT LIFE CONFESSIONS: Finding Purpose in Sailing - Harbors Unknown | Ep. 72 Sailing is our means of transportation and the boat our platform from which to explore. We are now travelers, not tourists. Witnesses to different cultures, ways of living, eating, working and playing. Attempting to understand what makes the world tick and tock but also trying to gain a deeper comprehension of ourselves and identify what will satisfy that hunger for further exploration. Step by step gaining a sure footing, wandering a bit further afield. Trying to learn the rules of the road, meeting many closed doors, hoping eventually to push one open, to crack the code. You’re an observer in these foreign places, of daily life, without the smoke and mirrors of a tourism board or travel guide. A patina of years of pollution and grime creates a mask over once grand colonial construction. Where chickens, roosters, pigs and stray dogs meander through underbrush searching for scraps. Monkeys gobble up the succulent mangoes before property owners can blink an eye. Vines of the wild jungle creeping across the road are kept at bay with machetes but the cacophony of ominous roars from the howler monkeys, sweet bird songs and buzzing of unknown insects pervades the air reminding us we are guests in this land. One day this is our reality and the next we’re in a modern city, countless amenities at our fingertips. Boat life is a world of extremes. One moment may be the most beautiful downwind sail, or snorkeling an amazing reef and the next may be a squall with thunder and lightning, 35 knot winds and 15 foot waves. During those uncomfortable times we ask ourselves why we’re doing this. The answer, is not so clear. I want to be immersed in nature, marvel at the earth’s creations, the lush jungle and wild animals, dynamic coral reefs and fascinating sea life, and connect with different people to try and see the world through their eyes. We’re finding that Panama is also a place of contrast. We’re staying in Linton Bay near the small town of Puerto Lindo. A remote area bordered by inaccessible jungle and the sea, where chickens crossing the street, goats and cows munching on grass are the norm. Panama City, 70 miles away is the complete opposite. A vibrant metropolis nestled in between the jungle and the ocean with modern architecture, a charming historical neighborhood, and the most incredible seafood market we’ve ever seen. There’s a stark contrast between this city and where we’ve been staying which makes its role as a bridge between North and South America even more evident. At the marina, a walk down the dock brings us back to the bar with one brand of beer and simple food where mosquitoes and no-see-ums own your ankles. We sit at plastic tables next to cruisers who stopped here decades ago, romantically inspired, in a quest for freedom from the 9 to 5, now spending drowsy afternoons milling about the boat yard and having late night conversations fueled by the local stimulant leaf. The beer is cold, cheap and goes down unpretentiously; everything is spectacularly real and unfiltered. Is this is what I was looking for? Some of it is. I love the feeling of being lost in a different world, reliving the emotions of the 18 year old version of myself hitchhiking through Europe. So different from what I have become in my life since the day I put down my guitar and chose medical school. And some of it is not. I need purpose beyond these lazy afternoons, I need to discover what is next as I am looking straight into the eyes of an unpredictable and exciting future. A thought is gnawing at my stomach, does the world still need me? Am I contributing enough by sharing this journey? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. The DREAM-CUP / GRAND PRIX DE FRANCE DE COURSE AU LARGE was created in 2016 by Jacques CIVILISE, to meet the need for a major “OPEN” French offshore sailing race, in the summer, open to many types of single- and multi-hull boats, professional and amateur sailors.It all came down to this day. With up to three races across the 10 classes, no lead was completely safe. The IC37 class, with 24 boats, was the extreme example, but New Wave sailed to the win. K-Challenge Team France was the dominant force for the first half of this GC32 World Championship, held in Lagos Portugal, but for the second half it was Christian Zuerrer’s Black Star Sailing Team which overtook the French after the third of four races. For the past 18 months, Team Malizia has been building its new IMOCA race yacht, Malizia - Seaexplorer. On 19 July, after 80 thousand work hours, the team is finally ready to roll her out of the hangar and let her touch the water for the first time. The Sailing club of Garda Trentino, especially in the summer period, also make themselves available for classes and events, which exclusively involve foreign crews, as they are reserved for classes that are not widespread in Italy. This is what is happening at the Mark Foy European Championship of the acrobatic 18-footers from Australia, who are putting on a great show at Circolo Vela Arco. Almost 100 of the most accomplished riders representing over 20 countries from 5 continents are ready to compete in the KiteFoil World Series Gizzeria in the south of Italy over the next four days from 21 to 24 July. Spain has won the Nations Trophy at the conclusion of the Allianz Youth World Sailing Championships in The Hague on Friday. There are 11 new Youth Sailing World Champions across the 11 diverse events contested by this elite group of under-19 sailors.

☀️ The Tiwal Cup made a strong comeback in the Gulf of Morbihan on June 4th. 62 Tiwal boats and 87 Captains came to challenge each other around the Gulf islands: the participation for this 7th edition was the highest ever and brought a new world assembly record (in 7 min 46)! ⛵ Sunshine and laughter were the order of the day throughout the 4 rounds, culminating in a dexterity test in the ball pool which delighted participants of all ages. It was a superb day that ended with the traditional prize-giving ceremony and a dinner by the fire, with a lot of sea spray in mind. To swim with a turtle off our own boat was high on the bucket list. Our turtle teacher was so chill and social - it was almost like he invited us to come for a swim with him. An experience we'll never forget and so happy we can share with you here! In this episode we also take you to Folegandros, a small spectacular island with a magnificent town up the mountains. Then we sail further northeast to the small cyclades, where we explore Schinousa island, meeting the most chilled sea turtle (Caretta caretta). We zijn nog niet uitgekeken in Suriname! We gaan wederom op safari en bezoeken wederom voormalige plantage Peperpot. Dit keer de kant waar de oude gebouwen deels zijn gerestaureerd en waar hard gewerkt wordt aan verdere restauratie. We gaan op bezoek in het dorpje Groningen en rijden door de jungle naar het Brokopondomeer. We gaan de Commewijne rivier op met een lokale visser om een maaltje bij elkaar te vangen. Ook starten de voorbereidingen voor het onvermijdelijke vertrek richting Grenada. We slaan diesel en bier in, in ongeveer gelijke hoeveelheden. We laten ons op COVID testen en met een negatieve test op zak kunnen we vertrekken. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen.
