In this episode, I have my brother Brent as crew, and we get the outboard installed, launch, provision and catch our weather window from Abaco to Georgia. 2 days were spent in the Gulf Stream, and we reached a speed over ground of 10 knots! I'll discuss what is planned for refit on Flying Spur at the end of the passage. I'll be back to Flying Spur probably in October after the hot Georgia summer is over, and I'll catch everyone up on progress at that time!
This is part 1 of a step-by-step build of a B&B Yacht Designs Spindrift 10 nesting dinghy, following the guidance from the build instructions. This video focuses on the layup in preparation to stitch and open the hull. The next part will be actually unfolding the hull, filleting the seams and wrapping in carbon fiber cloth. She will be the tender to Flying Spur soon! I purchased the pre-cut "kit" to save some time, but the same results can be accomplished by purchasing the build instructions and cutting your own marine-grade plywood. This video is for those who are looking to build their own dinghy, and who wish to learn more about the process. This is the second project Brent and I worked on together, the previous being a 7' pram for Brent. I hope you enjoy, and I hope you take away some successes we had, as well as learning from some of the failures we encountered.
This oar leather and button is for my 7' 6" oars for my Spindrift 10 dinghy. For the leather, I used Conceria Walpier 8oz veg-tanned leather. For the stitching, Maine Thread #40 waxed corded polyester. Polyester is well known for its UV resistance, and it's up to the task of a saltwater environment. The finished product is tapered and 11" in length. The warlocks should sit comfortably about 2" below the button.
This is the maiden sail of my 10' sailing dinghy The boat is a B&B yacht design, thanks for watching!
Don't pay $90 for a piece of $6 leather and some stitching! For a nickel, $6 worth of Conceria Walpier Tuscany veg-tanned leather, thread and a little time, you can learn a valuable skill and make a superior roping palm. A few years back, I bought a $26 sailmakers palm that was overbuilt and of the lowest quality. This roping palm I made is built after a high quality mass-produced product with a proven history of effective design, as well as overpriced materials and craftsmanship.

Episode 29 of Aboard The Flying Spur We depart Nunjack for Green Turtle Cay, and drop anchor on the south side of the island outside Black Sound. I go ashore at New Plymouth, and get a first-hand look at the devastation that is still evident from Dorian, a Category 5 hurricane in 2019 that annihilated the outlying islands of The Abacos. The town is full of spirit nonetheless, and they are friendly and welcoming! After 4 repairs on my poor dinghy, I finally put it in hospice, and make plans to pick up a new one in Marsh Harbour. I weigh anchor at No Name Cay and make the Whale Cay passage to Marsh Harbour Website: https://theflyingspur.com You can help support this channel by dropping a one-time donation into my tip jar, anything is welcome and so much appreciated. Aboard The Flying Spur Episode 23 Installation of a Windpilot Pacific Windvane in preparation for cruising in November! It's not a terribly complicated procedure, but I do run into an unusual box/enclosure that covers my backstay chainplate, and interferes with the bolts for the Windpilot. Unsure what to do about the enclosure, I take some photos and review with others, as well as look up what it's all about on the Internet... spoiler - didn't find much, and I need to bolt this in place! This is part 1 of a 2 part short series on installing a Windpilot, stay tuned for part 2!
