Hey there! A bit of a difficult balancing act to keep the boat from wiping out, but also to keep it fully powered up and in full speed. It's a fun challenge, but it takes a lot of energy and commitment from my side, it would be a bit easier just to bear away and and let the boat cruise. But I'm definitely not in cruising mode and I'm doing my best to stay ahead of the fast boats behind me. So rocking it and loving it! Beautiful conditions, as you can see in the video. Super fast. Vor 3 Monaten fegte ein unvorstellbares Unwetter durch Europa. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt befanden wir uns mit unserem Katamaran ENJA in der Rhone Mündung von Port Saint Louis und waren zum Glück sicher. Leider waren unsere Käufer des Vorgängerschiffes GAGOU, genau in diesem Zeitfenster an der N-W Küste Korsikas, in einer der Buchten, wo das Unwetter besonders verheerend wütete. Der Katamaran, ein Outremer 43, lag vor Anker und kenterte durch die ungeheuren Windgeschwindigkeiten und wurde zum Totalschaden. Gott sei Dank konnten sich der Skipper und seine Crew an Land retten und kamen mit kleineren Blessuren davon. Unser Film gibt einen bewegenden Einblick in die Ereignisse, da sich Jesse freundlicherweise bereit erklärt hat, uns ein Interview zu geben. Join us weekly for more off-grid boat living content! In this weeks episode we sail from Camariñas to Muros. Another beautiful sail but not without its problems. We come within miles of an Orca attack, it is quite harrowing to hear it play out on the VHF. You feel so helpless, and reminded of just how vulnerable we are. Since 2020, over 350 boats have suffered an interaction with this subpopulation of orca while sailing along the Iberian Peninsula, with around 70% being damaged. They seem to target the rudder (steers the boat), they can do so much damage to the rudder that the hull structure is damaged and boats take on water. At the time of writing two boats have been sunk. No one understands the new behaviours, there are many theories. The best course of action is avoidance. In 2022, almost 70% of reported interactions resulted in damage and 24% resulted in the boat's steering being disabled and requiring a tow from the emergency services to port. https://www.yachtingmonthly.com/news/orca-interactions-with-boats-expected-to-stop-91150 On the final sail into Muros the autopilot tiller arm snaps off of the rudder stock - the weld fails. So now we know longer have autopilot functionality. We were just extremely grateful that it didn't break on our Biscay crossing. We go for a short day sail to a nearby beach, and Walter drops his ball overboard, which we decided was good Man Over Board practice. This Wednesday morning, November 16, as the first boat was finishing the 12th Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe in Guadeloupe’s bay of Pointe-à-Pitre, a motor boat which was carrying 11 people capsized. The circumstances surrounding the accident are still undetermined, but it caused the tragic deaths of two people who were on board, both employees of OC Sport Pen Duick, the company which organises the four-yearly transatlantic sailing race from Saint-Malo to Gaudeloupe. “All our thoughts go out to the families of our two employees and to all of the profoundly affected members of our teams,” said Hervé Favre, President of OC Sport Pen Duick. Effets de site, alarme de mouillage et arrivée à Las Palmas. Nous avons quitté le mouillage de Graciosa pour rejoindre celui de Las Palmas à Gran Canaria. Playa Francesa est un joli mouillage mais son emplacement le soumet à de gros effets de site. Cependant, si vous voulez jeter l'ancre à Graciosa vous n'aurez pas beaucoup d'autres choix. Durant cette traversée je voulais partager avec vous la façon dont j'utilise l'application Boating en complément de mon alarme de mouillage.
