Meet Mitsuharu Kume — the closest real-world equivalent I’ve ever found to Kevin Costner’s “Mariner” from Waterworld. He may not have gills (that I know of), but he has everything else: a life shaped by tides, storms, shipwrecks, deep dives, and a lifelong devotion to the ocean. Mitsu is a fisherman, diver, sailor, photographer, conservationist, educator, and a father. He began life as a marine civil engineer designing harbours in Tokyo… but quickly realised he didn’t want to design the ocean — he wanted to live in it. So he left the office, joined an offshore fishing boat, and never looked back. During his years on Tanegashima he became deeply involved in sea turtle conservation and launched Sea Turtle Crew, an NPO dedicated to protecting loggerhead turtles and teaching island children about the marine world they inherit. 👉 www.turtle-crew.com Today, Mitsu is preparing a 33-foot Coura (a 1969 Ranger 33) to follow the turtles’ ancient route to Mexico. 🌊 Buren Bay — Our Harbour, Our Community Buren Bay is more than the mooring point for my sailboat, Wahine. It is my longevity laboratory, my home for reflection and writing… and the home of Mitsu — the unofficial Commodore of our tiny, informal yacht harbour. Living beside him has taught me more than any textbook, lecture, or seminar ever could. He has helped me navigate treacherous weather, introduces me to the community, and on stormy days when reaching my boat is “adventurous,” he offers me his guest room. 🌿 Lessons From Mitsu Our conversations on the steps of his vintage seaside home drift from philosophy to nonsense, from purpose to parenting, from seamanship to gratitude. He reminds me to be brave. To be kind. To work hard. To respect the sea. And to stay rooted: in family, in community, in responsibility. His 92-year-old mother — sharp, independent, living life on her own terms — embodies the resilience I’ve spent two years studying on my journey across Japan. We all need a Mitsu in our life — someone who keeps us honest, grounded, and moving forward under full sail. thanks to Mitsu for providing some of the footage 🌏 Learn more about Mitsu’s sea turtle conservation work: ➡️ www.turtle-crew.com 00:00 – Meet Mitsu: Japan’s Real-Life “Waterworld” Mariner 00:36 – A Life Lived in and on the Ocean 01:12 – From Tokyo Engineer to Offshore Fisherman 01:49 – Survival Stories: Sinking Boats and Deep Waters 02:27 – Tanegashima & The Birth of Sea Turtle Crew 03:05 – Protecting Japan’s Loggerhead Turtles 03:42 – A Sailor’s Dream: Preparing to Cross to Mexico 04:13 – Patagonia, Vegetable Oil Vans & Island Education 04:48 – Life in Buren Bay: Wahine, Community & Friendship 05:28 – Mitsu’s Wisdom: Family, Purpose & Living Fully 06:07 – Lessons Learned Beside a Mountain Stream 06:42 – The 92-Year-Old Mother Who Still Inspires 07:15 – Why We All Need a Mitsu in Our Life If your video ends earlier or later, I can adjust timestamps—just #Japan #Okinawa #Amami #BurenBay #SailingLife #OceanConservation #SeaTurtles #LoggerheadTurtles #Waterworld #MitsuharuKume #LongevityProject #PacificSolo #NeverTooLateAcademy #JapanStories #SailboatLife #IslandLifeJapan

In this episode, our passage south continues – another 85 nautical miles under our belts as we sail from North Keppel Island to Yeppoon for a quick reprovision, before setting out again via Great Keppel Island and onwards to Pancake Creek. That brings us to 694 nautical miles travelled, with just 176 to go before we’re finally home (unless of course we take more detours...). But the ocean had yet another test in store for us. While anchored at Pancake Creek, a northerly storm rolled in – thunder cracking overhead, lightning flashing across the sky, and winds gusting to 34 knots. Not the place to be in a blow like that from that direction! We rode it out, drenched and exhausted, but it set us up for a fast run to Lady Musgrave Island – our final challenge on this long passage south. Funnily enough, on our way north we’d also copped some pretty gnarly winds in this same anchorage, so it seems Pancake Creek just isn’t our lucky spot. We would have been happy not to see another storm like that for a while, but there's even more to come. Thanks for watching. The sound of flocking geese heading south begin to fill the twilight air, the white glaze of morning dew frosting the grass, the brisk sunset with a single dog barking off in the distance, and the clear star lit skies highlight the moonless cold nights. In the past these were normal events marking that Autumn is now in control. But we have other plans. We need to be heading south. Prior commitments have now given away to a mad rush to stock the boat with supplies and wait for an acceptable weather window to sail south. A weather window presented itself so we untied “Moments in Time” and pointed the hulls into the sunrise and started our odyssey south in search of warmer temperatures, sunsets, and girly drinks. The Men’s title was won by Kamil Manowieski who celebrates his second successive win of the season-ending event in Brazil. The Pole can be proud of a dominating performance in tough conditions.

We depart Kuala Terengganu with an unforgettable farewell, passing back through the drawbridge as crowds line the roadway and local boats escort us out. It’s a heartfelt send-off that perfectly captures the warmth of this incredible city. Heading south, the wind finally arrives — but straight on the nose — turning the sail into a slow and uncomfortable slog. As conditions build, we spot a small sheltered river protected by a brand-new breakwater and decide to slip inside. It proves to be a hidden gem: a perfectly calm, secure anchorage that gives us one of our best night’s sleep in days. At first light, we set off toward Tarempa in the Anambas Islands on an overnight passage. After a long night at sea, dawn brings us into a bustling shipping lane, where we carefully weave between tankers and freighters before making our final approach. Once checked into Indonesia, we’re invited to join the lively E-Festival — parading through town with the locals before a welcome dinner that’s suddenly interrupted by a classic tropical downpour! We finish with a full day exploring Siantan Island, visiting the Grand Mosque, the charming Dusun stilt village, the towering Temburun Waterfall, and the tiny town of Arung. Another episode filled with adventure, warm hospitality, and the vibrant culture of Indonesia’s remote islands. 🌴⚓ Timestamps if you like to Jump Right In: 00:00 Intro 00:32 Leaving Kuala Terengganu 05:20 Sheltering in Kuala Paka 07:48 2nd Reef Jamb 08:27 Heading off to the Anambas Islands 12:45 Clearing in to Terempa 14:07 Guests at the E festival 16:40 Island Tour WHO ARE WE? Hey there! We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream aboard our Seawind 1260 since January 2019 and now we continue from 2024 aboard our new 1370! Our adventure began with an unforgettable journey down the east coast of Australia, followed by a sail to the stunning New Caledonia. In 2020, we continued our exploration further north, and by 2021 and 2022, we circumnavigated Australia, discovering breathtaking locations along the way. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing deepened after crewing in South Australia, leading us to make the leap into full-time living at sea. We hope to inspire you, just as we were inspired by other YouTube channels, to chase your dreams and explore the wonders of this beautiful world. We finally pushed off the dock in Las Palmas and officially started our Atlantic passage… sort of. After a full crew debate, we’re calling this Day Zero. It is not that simple to upgrade to lithium. Pierre explains why, and how he is doing the upgrade on our Riviera 5400 Sport yacht. Riviera yachts are built in Australia, and when they are shipped to the USA they add on a 110 V system. This adds a bit of complexity to designing a safe way to install lithium batteries.

Sailing south along the Papuan coast is mind blowing. So much to see, so many villages that hardly ever see outsiders like us, such clear and clean waters, full of life. Kitikiti waterfall is one of the most beautiful places, huge amounts of fresh water cascading right into the ocean seemingly straight out of the rainforest. We anchored here for a few days and found our own slice of paradise. A bit of a cold and gray day on the ICW. With no heat in the cockpit and the generator broken, no recycled heaters, we're just kind of working our way south as best we can. An early morning up and going before sunrise ends long before sunset. We reflect on the decision of whether to get off the dock. Sometimes it is a much better idea to not leave than to take a chance.

I'm back in familiar New England waters. Following a provisioning run, I set off for a short sail from Vineyard Haven to Tarpaulin Cove. The sailing weather is near perfect, although there are thunderstorms in the forecast. Well those thunderstorms arrive sooner than expected in the form of a gust front that ushers in gale conditions lasting nearly one hour. Caught off guard I am scrambling, especially as the lovely Martha's Vineyard has suddenly become a dangerous lee shore. #boatfoolssailing #morgan384 #classicsailboats We Bought the Boat We Reviewed! Meet Our Morgan 384. If you want to see the full tour of this boat, watch this: https://youtu.be/RLJJ8Ea3gd8 Guess what? We did it again. Canadian Ken, Green Mountain Josh, and I just bought a second sailboat — a 1986 Morgan 384… the very same boat we profiled back in August of 2024. Back then, we were this close to making an offer, but she sold FAST. No surprise — the Morgan 384 is basically a leveled-up version of our beloved 1980 Morgan 382: • high-aspect ratio rig • larger rudder • shorter boom • upgraded traveler • all opening ports • gimbaling oven • electric windlass • and a nearly new Beta Marine diesel In other words: all the upgrades we dreamed of for our 382… already done. Chapters: 00:00 Opener - Cool sailing scene on our Morgan 382, plus The BoatFools Song! 00:13 Intro to the Episode - What Have We Done? 00:47 The Backstory of the Morgan 384 We Profiled & Kismet 03:54 The Pros and Cons of the Morgan 384 vs the Morgan 382 09:45 Some Survey Fixes 10:43 The Key Selling Point? :) 12:00 Should We Rename The Boat? 12:34 Final Thoughts! Then fate stepped in. The buyer who snagged the 384? He became a friend of ours over the summer of 2025. And when he decided to move up to a Bristol 41.1, opportunity knocked — loudly. Through some creative (read: owner) financing and a plan to charter out our Morgan 382 to help cover the costs, the deal came together. So what’s better than owning one classic Morgan sailboat? Owning TWO of them. Are we nuts? Probably. Are we excited? Absolutely. In this episode we share: • Why the Morgan 384 is such a special bluewater cruiser • What upgrades sold us instantly • How the deal came together • Our crazy-but-fun plan to keep both Morgans afloat (more on this in a future episode) If you love classic cruisers, Morgans, boat buying stories, or just watching three fools get in way over their heads (again), you’re in the right place. Real boats, real people, real fun! Sailboats for the Rest of Us! Join us for full boat tours, expert insights, and sailing adventures—all with a touch of humor. Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdH2L9SWYIbXONaZ1m9tR_Q/join Join us for one of the biggest passages of our sailing life — our ocean crossing from New Caledonia to Australia, a journey that’s been four years in the making. In this episode we sail across the Coral Sea, experience a rough start, navigate challenging conditions, thread our way through underwater seamounts, and finally settle into some of the most beautiful sailing we’ve ever had. If you love travel, adventure, bluewater sailing, and following a real cruising journey across the South Pacific, this is the episode for you. We take you through the entire passage: our weather window, the early rough sea state, and the moment the ocean finally settles into those perfect “dream passage” conditions every sailor hopes for. This channel is all about slow travel, sailing adventures, and exploring the world by land and sea. If you want to experience what it’s really like to cross oceans, live aboard a sailboat, and discover incredible places at a slower pace, make sure you subscribe and join us for the journey. WE DIDN'T EXPECT THIS SAILING THE AMAZON Thank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee. You can do so here: - Patreon https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis - Paymate https://www.kerryhamilltrust.com/donate/ - PayPal using our email thecruisingkiwis@gmail.com Welcome back to the Amazon Delta, a region we almost sailed past, yet now can't imagine skipping. This week, our journey takes an unexpected turn as a sailing family we met in Galinhos, Brazil, joins us aboard our floating home, after their sailing catamaran was tragically shipwrecked in the Lencois river system. Together we crossed the Pará River to the island town of Soure, Marajo - buffalo country. This part of Brazil has surprised us in every possible way: the kindness of the people, the unexpected tropical river beaches the buffalo riding police force, and of course our new shipwrecked crew, everyday feels like a plot twist, and you're with us for all of it. Big Majors gave us wind, waves and no shortage of work. An anchor dive, a stack of mast climbs, and slowly but surely our instruments are coming back to life. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel we return to Big Majors Cay to keep tackling the list left behind by our lightning strike. The winds turn, the chop builds and I end up diving the anchor before Captain Dave climbs the mast again and again to install our new wind transducer. ⚠️ The lightning strike changed everything on Dark Angel, and we’re still rebuilding piece by piece. Week in review! Wildlife for days.....
We make an early escape from the Giens Peninsula to stay ahead of strong winds forecast for later in the day. The headland near Toulon is notorious for accelerating the breeze, and once in open water, the waves can quickly build—so timing is everything. With a smooth passage behind us, we drop anchor off Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and wait for the wind to turn before crossing the bay to La Ciotat. This charming French town welcomes us with a large harbour, winding old streets, and plenty of cafés, restaurants, and small shops to explore. La Ciotat is a stop well worth making as we look for our next weather window to continue west along the Mediterranean coast.
