Continuing my quest to make this boat able to be steered by a bit of wood that can be angled in the water, I finalise the fabrication of the tiller head fitting, test fit the tiller and temporarily fit the rudder lower end plate, while I wistfully await more temperate times. This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. Life on a sailboat! - If someone was to ask us what’s typical about life on a sailboat we’d have to say - nothing! As we left the Corinth Canal and set sail into the Aegean towards an overnight anchorage we’d identified we had no idea what was in store for us over the next couple of days and nights! We passed wild fires caused by the extreme heat looking for a suitable place to anchor overnight bit with no luck we decide last minute to continue and sail overnight. As we settled into our night watch routine the failure of a crucial part led to emergency running repairs - all whilst being stalked by a submarine! We finally anchored the following morning in Kythnos, thankfully strategically, and thereby avoided a boat collision. ► boot Düsseldorf: a boat show without multihulls? ► The boat shows have decidedly made their comeback, but they’re bringing us their fair share of surprises... Following the very successful autumn boat shows afloat, we’re now into indoor events – beginning with a real cold shower at the Paris show. In Europe, the flagship event on which all the spotlights were focused was of course boot Düsseldorf, where I am at the time of writing. We’re talking here about the largest indoor boat show in Europe, maybe even the world, with some 1,500 exhibitors, representing no less than 68 countries... This 23rd edition has been long awaited, with the two previous events being canceled thanks to the pandemic. So, three years on, what is the outcome for boot? First of all, the organizers have reduced the number of halls to 16, compared to 17 - or even 18 - in recent editions. A more anecdotal thing, but symbolic all the same: visitors and journalists are now obliged to pay for their tickets for the bus, subway and trams in the city, whereas they were offered free of charge in 2020... Looking at the details, there’s a very contrasting situation, though not incomprehensible on the boatbuilders’ side. In the 7 halls occupied by motorboats, things are looking good, with units up to 80 feet in length and sophisticated booths. But something’s not quite right: the Prestige M48 is there, but... that’s the only powercat on show at Düsseldorf. In halls 15 and 16, reserved for sailboats, there are around a hundred manufacturers and a relatively dynamic presence of cruising monohulls - Bénéteau is exhibiting no less than ten models here. On the other hand, in hall 15, reserved for sailing multihulls, there were few units on show: order books are very full, transport costs and ecological awareness have motivated many exhibitors to attend without boats - or even without anything at all. A script that’s hard to follow when the same yards are sometimes bringing dozens of monohulls by truck - admittedly easier and less expensive to transport. In the famous hall 15, which has taken on a very sad feel, the Bali 4.4, the Excess 11 and the Lagoon 46 are nevertheless on display - and so have been overrun by the visitors! This drone video was taken by Erick Fontanals, my crewmate on board a Lagoon 39 we sailed from Lanzarote to Barbados, via the Cape Verdes in December 2023 Mindelo on St Vicente is the most popular destination in the Cape Verdes. It lies in a big bay and is easily accessed day or night. The light on the rock in the approach is a good guide, visible from miles out to sea. You can pass close on either side. Enter the bay keeping well clear of the busy commercial port - the breakwater and port may be hidden by cruise ships. Anchor where convenient in 6-10m, avoiding the marina entrance channel and the obvious wreck. Tidal range is under 1m. There is a popular dinghy dock and bar/restaurant at the head of the marina. Free wifi. If you plan to berth in the marina you need to call them in advance, although probably a boat will come out to you as you approach. You will need help docking. Water and electric is metered, the fuel dock is usually very busy. Port Police, Customs and Immigration is about a 10 minute walk by the gate to the main commercial harbour (turn left out of the marina). You need to clear in and out. Several small supermarkets, bakers and other shops within an easy walk of the marina. Boat spares may have to be flown in from Portugal.

After spending 4 months in Marina Motril, it’s finally time to leave the safe harbor We became part of the family there, so we were a little bit sad. We found out pretty quick, that a lot wasn’t working correctly Our new shaft and bearing became very hot, so we turned of our motor and started sailing The spare autopilot what we installed didn’t work well, so we had to hand steer all the way Our plotter did crazy things and gave a lot of stripes, after turning it of and waited a little bit before we turned it on, then luckily that started working again Then our wind meter gave errors and didn’t work anymore, We started to put little flags on the railing so we can see from which direction the wind came from. In the end the wind meter started working again. We didn’t film that much because we had to hand steer for 30 hours, but we had company from many dolphins. Hope you enjoy! Sailing to Tobago is not supposed to be easy, but it is not supposed to be this bad! Sailing upwind against the current became more difficult when we were hit by a 35 knot squall. We also caught a massive fish and experienced the delights of cruising Tobago, culminating in Carnival. After intense Egypt exploration for couple of weeks we are back on Aquarius hoping for a well deserved rest and relax, but it wasn't easy - mosquitos, flies, remote location with only basic provisioning and not even a chance to swim... But we surrounded by cheap 5* all inclusive hotels - and as the saying goes: when life gives you lemons, make a lemonade! So we did! And finally get some rest. With clear head we weighted our options and even we still had a week in the Port Ghalib marina we decided to leave to Jordan. Seemed like fairly easy and short passage across Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba, with forecasted light winds...
