We've been hauling out our 33 year old sailboat, Esper, since 2004 (in south-east Asia since 2014) so we have plenty of experience. But with all that practice, and no matter how competent the yard, it's always somewhat nerve-racking. A sailboat is supposed to be in the water, isn't it? And once you put it on land all kinds of stresses and loads appear that weren't there when she was floating. Hauling out is particularly disconcerting if it's the first time with a new yard and, in this case, a new method. We left Odd (our sailboat) in Brazil after a really nice day sailing to go to the United States. We had the opportunity to visit some boats that we really like and to go to the Annapolis Boat Show! Going to the Annapolis Boat Show for sure is one of the highlights of our year. It's always amazing to meet old friends and also make new friends. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). Christmas Eve we attempted to make a run to the San Blas Islands of Panama, thinking it would be a great place to spend Christmas, but the weather did not cooperate and nobody was enjoying the trip.. we had wind, waves, and current all working against us so we decided to turn back to Portobelo where the bay is always calm in this kind of wind conditions. Our Christmas Day we spent with some good friends here in Portobelo, Panama.. After a very long and exhausting night of steering OliLuki through a dark, moonless, rough seas night, we anchor at the first piece of land we could find and get to work on patching our steering chain together so we can continue the journey back to the U.S. Turks & Caicos officials kindly give us permission for an unplanned emergency refuel as we set off on the remaining 700 miles we need to travel in the deep Atlantic Ocean home bound! p.s. We leave Portland and have a very flat motor sail to the lovely seaside town of Port Fairy, before round Cape Otway and into Apollo Bay where a grumpy seal decides to rest on our marina finger. Our arrival into Port Phillip Bay is timed perfectly, however Laylah suffers an engine failure at the worst possible time just as we prepare to enter the Rip. Because of large tidal flows through the relatively narrow channel from the bay to the ocean, and a high rocky seabed, it's proximity to active shipping lanes, the Rip is a dangerous stretch of water and has claimed numerous ships and many lives. With a 2 police boat escort, we both safely sail through and No Regrets tows Laylah to a mooring at Sorento. WHO ARE WE? We’re Chris and Jo and we have been living on our Seawind 1260 since January 2019. In our first year we bring our yacht down the east coast of Australia and sail it out to New Caledonia. After cruising further north up the east coast of Australia in 2020, we decide to circumnavigate Australia during 2021 and 2022. We had previously owned fishing and water skiing boats, but after a couple years crewing in South Australia we decided to jump right in and make a sea change. 59º NORTH SAILING is an offshore sailing academy with a fleet of four boats ranging in size from 34 feet to 65 feet. Their largest boat, FALKEN, is a Farr 65 which was newly purchased and refit. Part of getting her ready for a life of teaching offshore sailing was a new set of X-Drive sails sold and designed by UK Sailmakers Sweden, built by UK Sailmakers Hong Kong with some finishing work by UK Sailmakers England. According to 59° North Sailing's Director Andy Schell, "The design brief was similar, but more focused on ocean cruising. We needed sails that would stand-up to 10-15,000 ocean miles per year, in all weather, with an amateur crew in a sail-training context. Being that FALKEN is a performance-oriented boat, we wanted fast sails too, and after our initial sea trials, I think UK Sailmakers nailed the design. The sails chosen to handle this relatively tough job are again X-Drive double taffeta sails with Spectra laminate and carbon loadpath fibers. These sails need to perform day-after-day for student sailors in the open ocean.”

A Hole Lot of Fun! More boat yoga anyone? Now that we are “experts” in fiberglass it’s time to tackle the anchor locker and weakly mounted windlass. The mounting plate and fiberglass is so cracked we are worried that one day when we are pulling the anchor up it might rip right off the boat completely. Not a good situation. So back in the hole we go. The days are ticking away as we head into winter and it's time to start planning to go south and make our way to the Bahamas. All of our big projects are finally coming to an end and we're now getting the opportunity to deal with the little things that nag at us. The fun jobs, as I call them. These are the things that really don’t need to be done for us to get off the dock but they make our lives a whole lot easier. Well almost, until our drone grenaded. *Note to self, always check your props before you fly We just have a few more really exciting events to attend while we are here in Virginia and then it's time to look for weather windows to make our way South. Wir, Emely und Tjark, haben uns den Traum vom eigenen Segelboot erfüllt, eine Maxi 84, relativ spontan und ohne das ganz große Geld. Wir nehmen dich mit auf unsere Reise von blutigen Anfängern zu hoffentlich passablen Seglern. Getauft wurde sie auf den stolzen Namen Meera. Nach dem ersten Winterlager mit der Überarbeitung des Unterwasserschiffs, sind wir 2022 in unsere erste Segelsaison gestartet. Also kommt mit auf unsere Reise die Welt zu erkunden, für den Anfang erstmal die Ostsee. Da wir noch echte Rookies sind, müssen wir erstmal lernen zu Segeln und was es heißt abhängig von der Natur zu sein. Bevor es in die weite Welt hinaus geht, liegt noch ein Berg an Arbeit vor uns. Umbauten, Änderungen und vor allem der Sportbootführerschein müssen erledigt werden. Fürs erste bleibt die Ostsee unser Revier und wir freuen uns schon viele fremde Häfen zu entdecken. Arriviamo all'affascinante e selvaggia Alicudi, un bagno di emozioni senza tempo. La prima delle sette sorelle ci accoglie commuovendoci. ⛵️ Estate 2022 - 123 giorni di #mare, 3130 miglia percorse con il nostro “Ronik”, assieme ad ospiti ed amici per provare le emozioni che solo a bordo di una barca a vela possiamo vivere. Amiamo viaggiare ed ogni luogo che visitiamo è sempre una piacevole scoperta. La #vela è viaggio, il viaggio è scoperta e conoscenza, la conoscenza è cultura, non è importante la destinazione ma il viaggio stesso!
