Throughout the years, we have embarked on numerous upgrades to enhance our sailing experience on Polaris. We swapped the standard propane gas cooker for an electric cooker and oven, installed a generator, and upgraded to a lithium (LiFePo) house battery bank. Additionally, we added 1,200W of solar panels and a water maker to ensure self-sufficiency on the open seas. The inclusion of a third reefing point on the mainsail and an inner forestay for a working jib and a storm sail further enhances Polaris as a comfortable and safe live-aboard yacht. We now sail along Scotland's breathtaking coastline, enjoying year-round living on our floating oasis. The Maskelline Islands is a small archipelago nested in the southern tip of the major Island of Malekula, in Vanuatu. The area have several villages that are very. colorful have plenty of agriculture in their traditional gardens and good fishing. The canals in between the islands also boast a healthy population of dugons, giant marine animals closely related to the Manati of Florida. They hosted us for a whole day beautifully warm event that included a walk around their island, a traditional feast, dancing and signing. Not to be missed when sailing Vanuatu!

Records are being set and then broken again on leg 5 of The Ocean Race. If the Malizians had a later start, their endgame was brilliant. On Friday night, near 22:20 UTC, the team edged past the mark set by Team Holcim-PRB, and narrowly established the new standard - 641.13 nautical miles covered in 24 hours. The fast pace has also brought the Malizians right back into the race for honours into Aarhus, now trailing the leading 11th Hour Racing Team by just 25 miles. Team Holcim-PRB is squeezed in the middle, just 10 miles back. Navegar a vela por las Rías Baixas no tiene igual. Cíes, Ons y Sálvora son la cima de tan bello paraje. Zarpamos del puerto de Punta Lagoa en la ría de Vigo un viernes por la tarde para poner rumbo a la playa de Barra, en Cangas del Morrazo. Vientos fuertes del norte es lo que nos espera todo el fin de semana. Entre 15 y 40 nudos de intensidad. Fondeamos ya de noche en Barra y conectamos la alarma antigarreo en el plotter. La verdad es que estas nuevas tecnologías son una maravilla. Hoy de cena toca empanadas y una buena tabla de embutidos. Abundancia y sabores ricos. Yo me voy al camarote sobre la una de la mañana. Parte de la tripulación se va a la cama sobre las cinco. A las siete, me levanto, desayuno y arranco el motor. A las siete y media ya estamos poniendo rumbo a Cíes. Paramos en la playa de Rodas, donde la tripulación se pone a desayunar y hacemos una parada momentánea. Salimos a vela entre las dos islas. Pero al poco rato decidimos virar y navegar en la ría. He de dar una clase de vela y hay demasiada mala mar para ello. Menuda gozada de bordos nos pegamos. Vientos de entre 15 y 35 nudos hacen que el Gran Nergha se despegue del agua. Paramos a comer en la playa de A Borna, en el concello de Moaña. Un descanso para el marinero. Salimos al terminar y cuando íbamos a izar las velas, nos llaman de Salvamento Marítimo. Un submarinista no ha salido de su inmersión. Hace cinco horas que se sumergió y su barquero le está buscando. Nos dirigimos a su posición. Nos posicionamos y en la zona vemos dos boyas esféricas naranjas. Nos imaginamos que está debajo. Preguntamos si hacemos algo y nos responden que nos mantengamos a la espera. Llega la Guardia Civil, la auxiliar del María Pita y la Salvamar Mirach. Estamos como hora y media en las inmediaciones y nos avisan por radio de que ha aparecido su cuerpo sin vida. Seguimos nuestro rumbo. Ponemos rumbo a la playa de Barra. Nos toca navegar toda la ría a un largo en un solo bordo. Alcanzamos una velocidad de 10,3 nudos. Fondeamos en Barra y tenemos una noche estupenda. Por la mañana nos vamos navegando hasta la isla de Ons. Unos bordos en ceñida increíbles. Decidimos atacarla por fuera y volverla por dentro. Una gozada de navegación. Viramos en el faro de Camoucos y vamos volviendo a Punta Lagoa. After two years living and traveling full time on our floating home, if you ask us what we miss the most when we move to the next island, for sure the first thing that comes to mind are the friendships we cultivated along the way. So, it is really special when we have the opportunity to meet old friends again almost 4 thousand miles from the last port we met. This week we enjoyed a little bit more the Caribbean waters, we sailed from Carriacou to Bequia (in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) and also to Martinique. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). MUST KNOW INFORMATION KOMIŽA VIZ PORT In this video Nick visits the largest bay on the island of Vis and shares great must know information on Komiža, one of the most famous fishermen's town on the Adriatic. Komiža is completely exposed to the western and south-western winds which can get a little messy. Good shelter is provided in the port behind the high breakwater. =========================== Transcript segment ... Hi everyone. It's Nick here at 45 Degree Sailing. Today I'm going to go over the port of Komiža on Viz with you. Because this is an amazing port to come into it's a beautiful little seaside town. A fishing village. Rich with history and it's just an amazing setting in and amongst the hills here. [Music] Komiža's just nestled in behind these high mountains so you're going to expect a lot of wind to come off these mountains. Any north sector wind to really rip off the mountains it's not a bad thing it's just something to be aware of. now Komiža also is a notoriously rolly port. Now this is my call and I don't like rolly ports. So you can get a swell wrapping in here from so many different directions. So I only really come when I know it's going to be flat because I'm a very sensitive human being as far as swell goes. But it can really wrap around the port. Here you've got this massive break wall, which does a really good job. And then you've got two mooring fields. One out in the main, underneath the hill here and then recently they installed another mooring field to the seaward side of this main break wall fills into here, and they are good. But they're not super far away especially in this area so be aware if you're 50 plus feet and there's 50 plus feet yachts around you there could be on a light wind night or a no wind night this is where you get some movement together and if there's any swell you're going to be rocking around. So just be aware of that. There is one lateral green lateral starboard lateral beacon right on the end of the pier. The depth right off the edge of the pier is very good. Three and a half to four meters. So you have good access coming in and around. Be aware there is a lot of fishing boats here. This is a fishing village. So all of the inside of the inner harbor is filled with fishing boats all year round. In the winter or in the off season like now the pier has also got a lot of fishing boats on it but as you can see here in the summer this is all yachts going stern to the pier. As you approach this pier of course you're going to have staff helping you out like normal. Though this pair is very high. Okay we're talking about 1.5 meters at most times. Sometimes a little bit more sometimes less depending on the surge and the pressure and everything in the atmosphere. So be aware that even on a 55-60 foot yacht you're probably going to plank straight off your um off off the stern of the boat not off a swim platform. Even some are going on to to their rear seats or anything like that so they can be a very steep plank. So be aware you'll probably want to be a little bit closer to the pier and aware of that plank. If you've got a dinghy on the davit or catamaran or whatever you'll probably need to drop this so that you can get close enough............ watch for more great tips and information =========================== Looking to sail in Croatia?
