On 5th March 1936, Captain Joseph 'Mutt' Summers piloted the first Supermarine Spitfire prototype, K5054, from Eastleigh Aerodrome. Tra manutenzione, ormeggio, assicurazione e carburante, la nautica può essere impegnativa dal punto di vista economico. Launch is at 8:30, it’s 7:30 and we still can’t steer our rudders. Our 57ft abounded Catamaran has taken 82 days of non-stop work and today it finally pays off. The timeline we’ve set for ourselves is nothing short of ridiculous - there isn’t much like youthful optimism is there? But we aren’t going to give up now..one final push with the help of our friends and professionals at Ocean Degree! This is the culmination of the greatest challenge of our lives, bringing an abandoned 57ft Kelsall catamaran back to life in just 82 days with an abysmal budget and ridiculously under qualified self-belief...we have no experience with foam sandwich fibreglass construction, nor multihull boat designs, but somehow we’ve overcome every challenge to get to this day. We’ve slept about 8 hours in last 5 days to be ready for the launch and we’ve given this everything - mentally, physically and financially. But do you want to know what the craziest part is? It’s still just the beginning. We still have so much left to do on the boat, but getting off the hardstand and into the water means we’re safe from hardstand fees and can focus our attentions on the next phase. One day we’ll explore the world on this boat, but today? Living aboard our sailboat in Alaska means life happens in chapters. Sometimes we’re working hard in remote coastal communities. Other times we’re sailing to the next job. And occasionally we get these quiet moments in between where we can slow down and explore. On our way toward Port Protection, we dropped anchor on the northwest corner of Prince of Wales Island and decided not to rush into work just yet. Instead, we launched the paddleboards. Within minutes we were gliding across glassy water, exploring a remote stretch of coastline locals call Memorial Beach. Moss-covered rainforest, tide pools full of starfish, unusual rock formations, and a peaceful walk through the Tongass National Forest made this one of those days that reminds us why we chose this self-reliant sailboat life. Sometimes living aboard a sailboat in Alaska feels like we’ve simply moved our cabin to a completely new wilderness backyard for the night. Since 2020, Iberian orcas, also known as killer whales, have been interacting with and attacking sailboats along the coasts of Portugal and Spain, often targeting the rudder. More than 500 encounters have been reported, and several boats have even sunk after these orca interactions. In this episode, we are sailing straight through known orca territory on our journey from Sweden to the Mediterranean. The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race arrived to a huge ceremony in Qingdao, China at the end of Stage 7. Qingdao, the Sailing City of China, hosted the sailing events of the 2008 Olympic Games, and has turned into a major sailing destination, hosting the 2025 Women’s ILCA 6 and Men’s ILCA 7 World Championships which attracted over 230 athletes from 40 nations. The city is known as one of China’s most beautiful, and Fushan Bay is backed by the Loashan Mountains, which makes for a spectacular view as the Clipper Fleet arrived at the conclusion of Stage 7. The crowds were out in force to welcome the fleet, especially Qingdao Clipper which is sponsored by the city. We take a look at the route the fleet took from Subic Bay, The Philippines, and I spoke with Qingdao Clipper Skipper Phil Quinn, GOSH First Mate Otto Kulow and Clipper Race Manager Hannah Brewis, talking about the leg, the welcome, and their first sight of the new Clipper RX yacht, while will be used in the next edition of the race. We then take a look at the overall leaderboard, where GOSH, the team representing the Great Ormond Street Hospital, maintain a huge lead of 37 points at the top, despite a time penalty changing their Stage 7 result from first to fourth, meaning Tongyeong was awarded the Stage win. The battle for second overall is really tight, with Team Scotland on 60 points, London Business School on 56 points and Yacht Club Punta del Este just a point further back in fourth. Things are just as tight between Power of Seattle Sports and Qingdao, with a single point separating them in fifth and sixth respectively. We woke up to an incredibly calm morning anchored in a beautiful bay at Koh Mak, Thailand. With the water like glass and the jungle surrounding us, it was the perfect start to the day. After taking the dinghy ashore, Chloe and I went exploring through the jungle and stumbled upon something we definitely weren’t expecting — a hidden “Love Garden” filled with unusual life-size sculptures tucked away among the trees. Chloe’s reaction was priceless! After that surprising discovery, we found a small beachside resort serving breakfast right on the sand… and it only cost $3 per person. Back on the boat, we hoisted the sails and made our way south to Koh Kood, one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand. The bay there was absolutely stunning — crystal clear water, quiet beaches, and lush jungle everywhere. We dropped anchor, headed ashore, and discovered yet another gorgeous beach and resort tucked away on the island.
