It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. We start the day by catching live bait in order to catch species like snook and mangrove snapper. As the day progresses we decide to move on top of the grass flats in pursuit of bonefish and permit. With excitement we hook up on a fish of a lifetime, a Florida Keys Permit. People spend thousands of dollars in pursuit of the elusive permit on the flats of Islamorada. Full of excitement and joy we eventually head home away from the beautiful sunset in the Florida Keys. Once we arrive to the dock we clean or catch and head upstairs to cook up a delicious ceviche dish and reflect on the day.

The paint was peeling, there were spider cracks, water was intruding, and let's be honest it just looked awful. After weeks of prep which included sanding for weeks on end, filling in all the cracks and fiberglassing the gauges we created from digging out moist parts in the toe rails. We can finally see that it was all worth it!! Our $100 boat just got a MAJOR upgrade! The Marquesas have been incredible (aside from the crazy rash) but I’m itching (pun intended) to see the famous French Polynesia atolls. The Tuamotus are known as the dangerous archipelago or the Danger Islands. The looming coral reef and narrow passes, if timed poorly, can more closely resemble rafting a class five rapid than sailing. We’ve read some harrowing reports of three meter standing waves meeting a six-knot current that are not to be tangoed with. Doesn’t exactly give tadpoles like us the warm and fuzzies. But, the idea of sailing and swimming inside what is essentially a sunken volcano kinda blows my mind. Curiosity trumps hesitation any day for me. Plus, our fellow cruisers have left impeccably detailed notes on how to calculate the tides and how to approach each atoll. Our first Tuamotu is less than 500 nautical miles away, which is only a few days sail! But, as we were sailing away from the Marquesas, it hit me just how much planning goes into this salty way of life. So, I decided to take the opportunity to share how we planned this passage. Launching into planking is going to be a big and satisfying part of the project. We have been working towards this moment for a very long time. In order to make sure everything goes smoothly and is enjoyable, we need to make sure that we set ourselves up well before hand. In this episode, we do just that. We built a planking bench for us to work on as we are going to be scarfing up full length planks. We modified a power planer to get ready for backing out planks. And, we faired out the rabbet to its final shape, making sure that the back rabbet was a fair transition to the frames and that the bottom edge was a 90 angle to the back rabbet. All these things together will go a long way towards making sure that we have minimal snags or hiccups down the line when planking, which is coming up soon!! And speaking of planking... All of them were taken but the local guide says that we can tie up to the dinghy dock. My first Atlantic crossing. I am alone on the 12-metre REYKJA, a 35-year-old steel yacht. It's going from La Palma, Canary Islands, directly to Domenica, Caribbean. The distance is 2790 nautical miles, more than 5000 kilometres. It takes me 24 days. I cross the Atlantic in February. Sailing in the trade winds is not terribly difficult, but it has its pitfalls. In February, the wind blows stronger than in the months before. When the waves go up, the ship starts to roll strongly. Even sleeping becomes an adventure: where do I cling to without being tossed around? If the genoa, the largest sail, breaks just before the destination, you are suddenly quite lonely as a solo sailor. My conclusion from almost four weeks at sea? Strong stuff!

After almost 3 weeks in Fort Lauderdale, we’re finally ready to sail across to the Bahamas.
