We have plans to build our own catamaran. And we're going to take you through the process on how it's done! Using a Schionning 1200 as an example, we walk you through the steps of what it would take from the time you receive your shipping container full of components, to when your new boat is launched in the water. From finding and building a work space, to setting up the first panels, Matt will tell you each step that is involved, and what we estimate to be the time spent on each process. We expect this build to take approximately two years for us to complete, and will be done in the US, although we have not decided exactly where yet. And then there is Jason's thumb, which had an altercation with a razor blade.  It's the lingering physical evidence of the last three weeks of boat projects.  Clearly, this round was particularly harsh on the extremities. These two sailors are parched and our bodies and minds are in need of a little R&R.  So, we set sail for the Isle of Wine. It's been called the Martha's Vineyard of New Zealand, the honeymoon destination and the Aucklanders escape from the city.   It's the country's 11th largest island but the second-most densely populated at a whopping 7,689. But it wasn’t until we arrived in the Louisiades that we spotted our first Sailau; The traditional sailing canoe still used to this day to travel to and from mainland Papua New Guinea which is hundreds of nautical miles away. These canoes are used to sail families out to their farms, trade goods, take kids to school, attend sporting events and picnics. And man can they sail. They are fast! Reaching speeds upwards of 18-20 knots they beat Nahoa sailing hands down. Never mind the fact that they are constantly taking short cuts over the reef. We were in awe. It’s a tradition still going strong with knowledge passed down thru generations. The master builders typically construct a canoe as a group of men all chewing beetle nut, laughing and discussing the intricacies of each step of the process. The trees to build the Sailaus almost all come from the island of Panaeati in the Louisiades Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. The only thing that has changed these days is the use of rope instead of vine and a handful of copper nails. And luckily we met Reuben a lovely gentleman who offered to take us out for a day of sailing on a Sailau. We were given a quick lesson then taken out for the ride of our lives! Sailing into the sunset, LITERALLY! How AMAZING is this!!! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we depart Indonesia on a 220nm sail across the Malacca Strait to Thailand. After a scary start to the journey with problems with our AIS in the middle of the second busiest shipping lanes in the world... We are blessed with the most amazing conditions and make great tracks to Thailand. We have the best sunsets and sunrises we have seen in a long time! For some reason the best sunsets are at sea! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we have returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji around the world!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! Touchdown in Auckland, but like everyone else who enters New Zealand 14 days managed quarantine lies between me and immersion in the America's Cup world. Fortunately as I sit out the two weeks in my hotel room there's been plenty to watch, plenty of chatter and plenty of detail to look into as we watch teams get ready for the America's Cup World Series that starts on 17 December. After repairing our bulkheads inside, we start the next project which is to extend the boat by 1.5 feet. The Lagoon 450 has a very small bottom step, so we decide to extend the sugar scoop to create a nice swim platform. We also do it in a way that extends our waterline, so we may notice a small increase in stability and performance. Very exciting! Bei einem völlig ausgedünnten Markt für Kats wurden wir in der Türkei fündig, während das Land von einem Lockdown in den nächsten gehüpft ist.
