What appears to be fairly minor surface damage turns out to be rotten, wet, balsa core, and it ALL has to come out. The temperature has been perfect and we’ve had some incredible anchorages nearly to ourselves in one of the most beautiful cruising grounds in the world. But there is one major downside to sailing this early in the season. Fierce storms roll through this region in spring, and when they do it can feel like god is tearing a hole through reality. Plus it’s difficult to find good shelter here because the mountainous terrain causes the winds to wrap in unpredictable ways, so we can never be certain if we’re protected from forecasted winds. And the extremely deep anchorages make finding a safe spot to drop the hook a real challenge. Last week after being surprised by some strong winds that appeared out of nowhere, we sought the refuge of a small marina tucked away in a long, narrow bay. And when the forecasts started calling for a storm to come through the area, we decided to stay in the marina until it passed since this bay appeared to have good protection from the forecasted wind direction. Ça nous permet d’être loin de tout le monde et de faire ce qui nous plaît, comme allumer un feu de camp sur la plage, se faire cuire un bon repas sur le feu et même se balader nu, si nous en avons envie. Même si l’île est déserte, malheureusement, ça ne veut pas dire qu’elle n’est pas polluée de plastique. Cette île, comme la majorité des îles que nous visitons dans les dernières années, est remplie de plastique qui s’échoue après avoir voyagé avec les alizés sur nos océans. South Florida was bracing for the worst and on Wednesday it really looked like the storm could hit us hard. Thankfully we made it through unscathed, unlike many of our friends to the north.
