After arriving to Mexico after our 5 day passage, we were super stoked to dive right into everything this coast has to offer...but mother nature had other plans for us. What we hoped to have been a little 3 day stop over turned into 3 weeks as the strongest hurricane to ever hit the pacific coast of Mexico in the month of may rolled in to the north of us, and then blasted headwinds in the exact direction we wanted to go for the foreseeable forecast. "Astragale" is a Mason 33s designed by Al Mason in the late 50’s. Professionally built in 1974 by Paul Mailloux of Mailloux Leclerc shipyard in Île-aux-Coudres, Charlevoix QC, using mild steel. Deck and hull plates are 1/8 of an inch, keel plates are 3/16 of an inch. In 2004 ASTRAGALE was transported from Ontario to Quebec city were she underwent a complete and thorough refit. A thorough inspection of the hull was conducted and a section of the bow, chain locker location, was replated with 3/16 of an inch by the son of M. Mailloux, who works as a professionnal ship welder. A dog house was added, 1/8 of an inch plate, to have an inside watch area with a collapsible seat. Portholes made of lexan 3/8. "Astragale" was back in the water in 2015 and navigated St-Lawrence river and the Maritimes. The interior finish is to yacht standards; a great opportunity for a couple looking for a strong pocket cruiser to explore remote coves and bays. Docking can be incredibly challenging and result in lots of damage to your boat, to other boats and to docks. Watch the video to see some simple tips to do this right. Every time I bring a sailboat into a slip or to a dock, my heart still beats faster, and that’s actually a good thing. Whenever you try cramming a beautiful sailboat into a tight space surrounded by millions of dollars in yachts, and you add wind and current and prop walk, this makes for a challenging situation. We recommend when you’re working on your docking, find a nice long dock, and ideally practice your docking in calm conditions. We’re big fans of practicing docking at fuel docks. These are usually longer docks, not too many boats around, and it just gives you a little bit more room to maneuver. On this video, we’re just going to cover the basics. There’s a whole science to docking, lots of advanced techniques but we’re just going to look at the simple aspects of docking today. It’s really important, before you come into an unfamiliar marina, dock, or slip, you want to find out about the area. Four things that you want to know: Number one, you want to know the wind direction. Where is the wind coming from? Which way is it going to push your boat? Number two, is there any current in the marina, and which way is that going to push your boat? The third thing is hazards. Often, you might find yourself in an area where there’s an old dock, maybe a strip of wood coming off, maybe there’s a rock in the area. You want to know those hazards. The fourth thing is the height of the dock. This is really important, because we need to know the height at which to put our fenders so they protect our boat when we come in to dock. Another thing you want to know is the effect of prop walk on your sailboat. Most sailboats, when you put the boat in reverse, are going to pull the boat to port. Before we make our approach into the dock, there’s a couple other things that we want to get ready. We want to tie our fenders on. We then want to run our dock lines, one from the bow cleat, one from the stern cleat. Make sure they’re not going over the lifelines or around the stanchion. We also want to open up the lifeline gate, just so we’re ready to jump off on the dock. When you’re coming into a slip or a dock, really important that you plan your approach into the wind. It’s going to make things a lot easier, and just help slow your boat down. As you line up to come in with the dock, you want to be going slow. I can’t emphasize this enough. You really, really want just barely enough speed so that you have steerage. You want the boat going as slow as possible as you approach the dock. Talk with your crew. Make sure everyone is clear on their responsibilities and how they can help you dock. When the boat is one to two boat lengths from the dock, you’re going to want to go ahead and put the boat in neutral. What this is going to do is, it’s going to help you control your speed and just glide in slowly to the dock. As you make your final approach to the dock, it’s really important that you come in at as shallow an angle as possible. As the boat gets really close to the dock, you’re going to want to start pivoting the bow away from the dock. The goal here, when the boat makes contact with the dock, you want the beam of the boat, the widest part, usually near the shrouds, to gently kiss the dock. Right when the boat is about to make contact with the dock, the helmsman can feather the boat in reverse. This means just giving a little bit of reverse and go into neutral, a little bit of reverse, and go into neutral. You don’t want to slam the boat into reverse at this point, or prop walk can pull your stern away from the dock. When the boat has come to a full and complete stop, the crew with the dock lines can step off the boat and go ahead and cleat those lines off to get your boat attached to the dock. Warn you crew ahead of time you don’t want anyone leaping or jumping off the boat. As the boat comes in, if you have people trying to make flying leaps off onto the dock, it’s just a recipe for a disaster. PS. Well, we are Kate and Curtis. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. We have sailed over 10,000 bluewater miles to date. We watched other sailing channels before we left as well. We even considered van life, a tiny home, or a motorhome / rv. Some of the channels we enjoyed were Gone with the Wynns, Project Atticus, and MJ Sailing. We didn't really set out to be influencers, but we wanted to return the good karma and pass our inspiration and knowledge along. After numerous challenges and setbacks we are finally picking up the pace and getting into a solid groove! The replacement planks all go onto the hull quickly and smoothly compared to the other planks. We also have to get a bit inventive so we can hit the same screw holes in the bronze strapping with the new planks. We push the big band saw to it's limits re-sawing oak planking and spend some time on the scales weighing Steve as well as an oak and cedar plank to see if our previous estimate for increased weight was accurate. All in all it seems we are on the up swing, fingers crossed it stays that way!! On the smooth seas and dodging fishing nets on our way, it turns out to be a pants dropper!! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, our visas are up in Thailand and we need to do the typical sailing visa run in the area to Langkawi. We never thought we would be heading back to this land after spending 3 months in the boatyard here and honestly when we left, the last thing we could ever think of was coming back to Langkawi. But as our story evolves and plans change, we need to return to the island once again. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we have returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji girl around the world!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! Dashing for the border, exploring the jungle, swimming in mangroves, and repairing our water maker is all in a few days work out here. Super-mom Kazza only got 30 days on her Panamanian Visa. So we dash for the border and cross our fingers that we'll get to stay longer! We make it safely back into Panama and after a bit of jungle exploring on our little island we go on a dinghy adventure deep into the mangroves where we experiment with our new over/under camera housing. We get some fantastic shots and Baby Nuggs has an incredible time swimming in the clear waters. I decide to tackle our watermaker troubles and end up replacing the membranes. We are now cranking our amazing quality drinking water and Delos has never been closer to leaving the dock for the season! We went tripping and ended up in Dallas for a short stay. Karen cleaned rust stains off the deck. The shackle bolt came loose releasing the mizzen boom which then crashed into our solar panel. Fortunately, there was a line on the end and it was a soft landing, whew! Steve installed some seizing wire on the shameless shackle, thus preventing the bolt backing out on it's own. He also reversed the goose neck because he initially installed it upside down. Otherwise, we would have no place to attach the tack of the mizzen sail to the mast. Spent a nice evening on the deck planning our next get away and reflecting. Excited about the upcoming holidays which we will spend in San Diego. Thank you to our subscribers!
