Live coverage of the start of the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race. 00:00 - Pre-Start 30:00 - Multihull Start 56:00 - IMOCA/Class40 1:12:00 - IRC Zero 1:28:00 - IRC 1 1:44:30 - IRC 4 1:58:00 - IRC 3 2:14:00 - IRC 2 A fleet of 337 boats leave the Solent, bound for the Fastnet Rock in the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race. The Rolex Fastnet Race has a reputation for the severe weather that it can throw at its competitors. Still strongly remembered is the 1979 race that cost 19 lives. Today the 49th edition of the 96-year-old offshore racing classic lived up to its fame as the first of seven starts got underway at 15 minute intervals starting at 1100 BST. Over the last three days strong southwesterly winds have been blowing up the Channel and competitors in the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s premier event were treated to these same headwinds gusting into the 30s and, as the tide turned off the Needles and in the western Solent, a building wind-against-tide sea state developed. COVID, international travel restrictions due to COVID, plus Brexit have resulted in this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race being a unique affair. This along with a lively forecast for the race’s first 24 hours caused entries to drop as start day approached. Nonetheless, crossing line today off Cowes was still a highly impressive turn-out of 337 boats from 24 nations including Japan, Mexico and eight from the USA, but the majority from Europe, including the largest ever turn-out from France. Despite winds gusting to 35 knots, the starts got away well. Among the multihulls, it was the favourites and defending champions, Volvo Ocean Race winners Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier on the Ultime trimaran Maxi Edmond de Rothschild that pulled the trigger most rapidly. They were followed by Thomas Coville’s Sodebo Ultim 3 and the Yves le Blevec-skippered Actual, but with the two MOD70s Maserati and Argo of Giovanni Soldini and Jason Carroll respectively, leading the charge in the MOCRA fleet. Incredibly just three hours after starting the Ultimes had already crossed the Channel and were putting in a tack to the west of Cape de la Hague, setting themselves up unusually to pass south of the Casquets TSS. We make it to the paradise of San Blas, Panama and promptly consider never leaving! Our first stop in this incredible spot is Cayos Chichime, where we immediately head into the beach to stretch our legs. We find swaying palm trees, golden colored beaches, and gin-clear water. The locals are super friendly and I buy a gigantic lobster to celebrate our anniversary dinner! On the outer reef a gigantic wreck looms, which begs to be explored. It's the San Blas Ferry, once the Grand Manan Ferry from way up north. It's an incredible story how it ended up washed up on this reef, and you'll have to watch the video to find out how! After a few days in this chill spot we set sail to Cayos Holandes to meet up with our buddy Colin from Parlay Revival for a weekend cruiser regatta. If your a bigger person, like me, you probably worry about getting back on your kayak if you fall off. With this technique, you can boost your confidence and be more comfortable on the water. This is not a "sure thing" technique, it's just what works for me. But, it should at least give you somewhere to start! Actually doing it was the scary part for me. Now, I have much greater confidence on the water! I know that what I do on the ground and what I do on the yak look like two different things. They aren't really that different. By practicing what I did on the ground, I was able to do what I did on the yak! Remember, CENTER of balance is the most important part! Keep your head over the center of the hull and all will be fine. If you didn't make it to the end,.. Well,... Let's just say you missed the best part... LOLOL

Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. When a Hurricane is headed towards your family, your home, your business, your entire life…What do you do? As captain of a boat, you make hundreds of decisions every day. Some big, some small, some inconsequential…but when the stakes are this high and the information available to you is changing by the hour, it’s a pretty heavy feeling knowing that this is one decision you ABSOLUTELY have to get right. As Hurricane Kay began to develop, we quickly realized that we needed to start making some moves- not only to try and create distance between ourselves and its projected path, but also because our insurance would only cover  anything that might happen to Delos in a named storm if we were north of a certain latitude.  But the decision of how we should respond was far from easy to make- as forecasts changed and information started reaching us from other cruisers in different locations, our heads started to spin a bit.  This was an extremely exhausting time for us mentally and emotionally...the anticipation, the unknowns, the weight of the decisions that we needed to make, the preparation, the anxiety...We hope you enjoy this episode as we explore some of these feelings, share how we go about making decisions like these and processing the information available to us, and take you through how we prepare for the serious weather that was headed our way. We had a beach bonfire on a remote island in the exuma bahamas and then a great sail flying the spinnaker at 9 knots in flat seas! What a dream! We sailed up to the famous Staniel Cay Yacht Club where we got a mooring and saw a boat that was stuck hard aground. I flew the drone to catch the action and the boat eventually freed itself with the help of their dinghy. Then the ladies got dressed to the nines in their little black dresses and we went ashore to the bar and restaurant for drinks and a great meal!
