We went from low winds to 40 knot gusts during our journey to the Florida Keys. Leaving Port Canaveral with our new stack pack for the mainsail, we cruised to Ft. Pierce inlet with almost no wind. Stopped for the night at a nice marina where we met a friendly couple and saw Goliath Grouper fish. From Ft. Pierce we went to the West Palm Beach Inlet and again we had a low wind day. We dragged the keel a couple of times but were able to power through thanks to our 150hp Cummins. Things changed when cruising from West Palm Beach to Ft. Lauderdale. With lightning strikes and weather warnings of 60 mph wind gusts, quarter size hail and water spouts we found it hard to see Ft. Lauderdale let alone the channel markers. It was definitely a change in weather! We only saw 40 knot gusts which was enough. We have to leave Tikehau with enough light so we can see the bommies that threaten our route out of this atoll. We are sailing against the wind and prevailing swell so it's going to be rough...which will slow us down. We're sailing to one of the most dangerous passes in the Tuamotu Archipelago. We must arrive at slack tide or we're gonna die (at least that's what all the 'cautionary tales' on the internet say). Pile all those fear mongering tales with an exciting start of 5+ knot current pushing us out of Tikehau, then top that with a busted starter causing our engine to fail and we now have an anxiety pie. What should have been a nice, short sail turned into a stress induced motor repair bashing. Hooray Boats! One things for sure, there's never a dull moment in this sailing life of ours. In the end we take the sour so we can savor the sweet...and Rangiroa is supposed to be one of the best places in the world for SCUBA Diving Sailors like us. But as with any boat and especially a new boat, we have racked up a nice list of warranty work we need to sort out.  At this point we were a little on the fence about where to go: Subic - The team at Asia Pacific Marine had taken such good care of us when we were there. We trust them and their work and it was only a few hundred miles away. Cebu - HH Catamarans has recently set up a second factory here and naturally, would prefer we come to them. But they haven't finished building their dock, haul out facility or marina. So they had to verify they could actually make the haul out happen. A random encounter takes us on a road trip across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico! Coming back from drinking margaritas we find a local boat tied up next to our dock in Isla Mujeres. Her skipper was named Susan, and she randomly offered to take us on a road trip of her favorite sites. We find sometimes that just accepting random offers leads to an incredible experience, and this was no exception. Our first stop is Ek Balam, where we explore the amazing Mayan Civilization and learn about this once thriving culture. After a few more hours of driving we find ourselves swimming in the underground caverns known locally as Cenotes, and finish up the day with a private tour and incredible meal at a hacienda turned into an amazing resort.
