In this episode - Sometimes the best adventures happen when you step off the boat! This week, we’re soaking up the charm of the Gulf of Corinth and ticking a few big items off the to-do list. Our stop in Trizonia—the only inhabited island in the gulf—was peaceful, but it came with a bit of a mystery. After some light rain, we spotted a sunken boat in the harbor. It’s a stark reminder of the "sink or swim" reality of boat ownership! To make sure we stay on the right side of the waterline, we got to work on some toe rail repairs to keep the deck sealed and solid. While we were busy with the tools, the kids were busy making dozens of new four-legged friends. Let’s just say the local cat population in Trizonia is very well-attended to now! 🐈⬛ Next, we sail over to the beautiful waterfront of Galaxidi. We wen on a road trip with our friends from Manketi and trade the sea for the mountains, taking a road trip up to the ancient ruins of Delphi to see if the Oracle has any advice for our future travels. https://www.facebook.com/fivegosailing https://www.instagram.com/fivegosailing If you are able and would like to support us we have a 'buy us an ice-cream' page here is the link: https://ko-fi.com/fivegosailing
Caribbean sailing life | Together, apart This week's episode takes us across oceans from the Caribbean Islands to England, as life on and off the boat unfolds in very different ways. While Rob and the boys sail north, along the west coast of Guadeloupe, they are treated to an unforgettable encounter, swimming with a pod of dolphins in the clear blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. magical. Across the continents, we find ourselves connected by one moment, watching Finn race in the single scull New Zealand championship. From the water in New Zealand, to a sailboat in the caribbean, to a quiet hospital room in England, we are united, together apart. Ready to master anchoring check out the NauticEd anchoring course - https://www.nauticed.org/sailing-courses/view/anchoring-a-sailboat?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=8Xm-oJ1q-lQ Check out IMTRA for all your windlass needs (they are experts) - https://www.imtra.com Adding a swivel between your anchor chain and your anchor is one of the most debated decisions in anchoring — and getting it wrong can result in twisted chain jamming your windlass at the worst possible moment. This NauticEd video covers whether you need an anchor swivel, what it actually does, and exactly which style to select for safe and reliable ground tackle recovery. What this video covers: - Why chain twists naturally during overnight anchoring as wind and tide change direction while you sleep - How twist shortens chain links and causes them to jam as they enter the windlass during retrieval - How a swivel connected between the anchor shank and the first chain link begins to unwind accumulated twist as the anchor lifts off the seabed - Why the two pins of a swivel are sized differently — one for the anchor shank and one for the chain link — and how that pivot geometry works - Why bullet-shaped swivels outperform traditional bow shackle style swivels on the bow roller - How flush cross pins eliminate the snagging point that causes resistance when the anchor makes the 90 degree turn over the bow roller - Why Imtra recommends the Gloma swivel made in Spain, and how its cross pin, thick sidewall, keeper pin, and Loctite retention system prevent hardware from backing out and losing your anchor at sea A swivel is a small component with significant consequences if it fails or is absent. Selecting the right style and securing it correctly is one of the most important decisions in your ground tackle system. We’re getting the boat ready to shove off, but we hit a major "fail point"—the bilge lockers were looking like a high school science experiment. Living on a sailboat means fighting a constant battle against humidity, and if you leave your gear exposed, the mold wins every single time. It’s a mess, it smells, and it’s eating up the limited real estate we have left in the cabin. . Time to deploy the WW11 Maneuver. We aren't just shoving clothes into lockers anymore; we’re going full isolation mode. I picked up a 10-pack of vacuum storage bags from Amazon to see if we can actually reclaim our storage and kill the "bilge funk" for good. No fancy vacuum cleaner needed—just a manual hand pump and some Southern grit. If this works, we’re looking at an 80% space saving, which is the difference between a cluttered deck and a clean departure. . The lockers are packed, the air is sucked out, and the gear is bone-dry. We’ve managed to compress months of supplies into a fraction of the space, and more importantly, it’s sealed away from the salt and dampness. The mission is a success, the boat is organized, and that means it’s officially Beer-30. . SHOP THE GEAR ⚓ Vacuum Storage Bags (10-Pack with Hand Pump): https://amzn.to/4tgSHor ⚓ Join the Crew for Exclusive Updates: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZBmn0CZW578hpt4ImB3CRA/join ⚓ More Sailing Adventures: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/travel/sailboat-life/ . Do vacuum bags actually prevent mold on a boat? . The Forensic Bottom Line: Yes, because mold needs oxygen and moisture to survive, and these bags eliminate both. By pulling a vacuum and sealing the zipper, you create a microscopic fortress that keeps the "bilge funk" from ever touching your threads. It’s the only way to store linens long-term in the tropics. What happens if the vacuum bag gets a tiny puncture? . The Forensic Bottom Line: The bag will slowly reinflate, and your mold protection is compromised immediately. On a boat, you’ve got to be careful of fiberglass splinters or sharp locker hinges. I usually double-bag the high-stakes stuff or line the locker with a moving blanket to prevent "the slow leak of doom." . Is the manual hand pump worth the effort? . The Forensic Bottom Line: It’s a workout, but it’s the only reliable option when you’re off-grid without 110v power. You don't want to rely on a vacuum cleaner when you're anchored in the middle of nowhere. The manual pump is slow, but it’s "sailor-proof" and doesn't require a generator. . Can I reuse these bags after a season in the bilge? . The Forensic Bottom Line: Absolutely, provided you wipe down the exterior with a vinegar solution before opening. Don't bring the outside mold into your clean cabin environment. Clean the bag, unzip it, and your clothes will smell exactly like they did the day you put them in. . [01:34] Pro Tip: Discussion on not overstuffing the bags to ensure the zippers remain airtight. [02:50] The Manual Pump Workout: Danielle puts in the work with the hand pump to reach that "pancake" flat finish.

Episode 266 The contrast of the Queensland coast is on full display in this episode! We start our stay in Gladstone anchored near a massive coal power station, only to wake up the next morning with the boat completely blanketed in black coal dust. It was a mess, but the journey had to continue. After a tricky search for a new anchorage around the industrial harbor, we eventually made tracks for the exit and set our sights on Great Keppel Island (Woppa). The passage turned into a wild ride with 30 knots of wind and big following seas—true blue water sailing at its most exciting! Once safely anchored in the turquoise waters of Great Keppel, we head ashore to explore: Wildlife Encounters: Meeting some very bold (and hungry!) local birds at the cruiser camp. The Hike: A rugged trek over the island's ridges to reach the lighthouse. Maritime Mystery: The haunting story of a local ghost ship. The Descent: A afterward run back down the trails to get home to the boat. SUPPORT OUT REFIT: help us finish our projects and continue making these videos for you at www.red-seas.com/refit We are upgrading our solar panels on our Leopard catamaran so that we are fully set up to live off grid in some of the most remote islands in the South Pacific. We live full time on our sailboat and we very rarely visit a marina or tie up to a dock so we need to have enough power to keep all our systems running and we think this project is exactly what we need! We have been living for the last 5 years with 1400W of flexible panels (8x175W) on our hardtop and a further 800W of rigid panels (4x200W) above our dinghy but now we're removing all of these and replacing them with something newer and more powerful. The flexible panels have lasted well but we have noticed that 3 panels have failed within in the last 6 months and we can only assume that the others don't have much life left in them either. We will be installing 2x625W panels on our hardtop which will give us almost as much power as we had there before, but in a much smaller space. And then we're going to add 4x695W panels above our dinghy, giving us a huge capacity.....and they're bifacial so we can add another 15% or so on top of that with the reflections from the water. We'll monitor our usage when we get back in the water and see how efficient the bifacial panels are, and how true these claims of reflective capacity are. But for now, we're excited to have that much more power to fill our new 1200Ah of (semi) solid state lithium batteries. Era il 2020. Ero davanti a un computer a cercare su Google: "Come diventare skipper", "come lavorare in barca a vela", "come cambiare vita". This episode begins just south of the harbor in San Sebastián de La Gomera, where we set off on scenic mountain trails that lead us to one of the island’s most charming and historic villages—Agulo. Often called “the jewel of La Gomera,” Agulo captivates with its colorful streets, peaceful atmosphere, and breathtaking viewpoints. From the cliffs above, we take in unforgettable views of neighboring Tenerife—and the iconic Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak. Before hitting the trail, we balance boat life with a bit of homeschooling (yes, even at anchor life continues 📚). Then it’s time to explore! 🌊 Next time on Sailing ELANE: We return to life on anchor at a hidden black sand beach—and finally get back out on the water for some fun! 👉 If you enjoy sailing adventures, off-the-beaten-path destinations, and family life at sea, make sure to subscribe and follow along! ________________________________________________ ⏱️ Timestamps 0:00 ⚓ Welcome back to Sailing ELANE 0:01 🌄 Mountain trails near San Sebastián de La Gomera 0:10 🏡 Discovering Agulo – “The Jewel of La Gomera” 0:16 🌊 Views toward Tenerife & 🌋 Mount Teide 0:32 🎶 Sailing life montage & good vibes 1:04 💛 “We can weather any storm” – life at sea moments 1:21 📚 Homeschooling before the hike (boat life balance) 2:11 👋 Starting the hike – family adventure begins 3:23 🥑 Avocado trees & lush island scenery 4:24 🧗♂️ Climbing steep stairs toward epic views 5:24 😅 “Indiana Jones” trail moments 6:07 🌿 Dense vegetation & rugged terrain 6:34 🎯 Reaching the viewpoint (almost!) 7:03 🥵 Big climb payoff & reflections 7:49 ⛰️ Looking back at the trails below 8:05 🌱 Nature recovery & island landscape 9:04 😍 “Wow” moments & scenic beauty 10:20 🚤 Life on the water & coastal views 10:33 ⚓ Scouting the next anchorage spot 10:44 🏝️ Black sand beach plans (next episode preview) 10:53 🌅 Breakfast views & fun at anchor (coming up!) _______________________________________________________________ #SailingELANE #LaGomera #Agulo #CanaryIslands #VanLifeAtSea #SailingLife #FamilySailing #SlowTravel #HiddenGems #TravelSpain #MountTeide #TenerifeViews #SailingAdventure #BoatLife #HomeschoolingLife #OffTheBeatenPath #AdventureFamily #OceanLife #SailingYouTube #ExploreMore
Losing your rig at sea can be anything from embarrassing to fatal! It need not cost anything to give yourself much greater peace of mind by doing a few common sense checks. In this video I enlist the advice of rigging guru Alan Harris-Guerrero from Sail Shape in Lostwithiel, Cornwall. He takes us through some checks we can make without any specialist tools, in this video he covers, mostly, the forestay, often overlooked as it's often hard to get at as the roller headsail mostly hides it! Contact Alan directly for all your rigging and sail needs at Sail Shape: https://sailmakers-uk.com, tell him I sent you! Here's a clip of Alan's Atlantic sail on the Sadler https://youtu.be/j-ovN4oRIDI?si=m3vKn_sJH-1szo3q If you like this, do please let YouTube know by liking, subscribing and commenting, it really helps.. Downsize is a strange way to look at such a capable and luxury boat like this Regal 43LX. But when you think about it and consider your lifestyle if you are in a place in life where perhaps overnights aboard the boat are behind you... or perhaps you are now living on or closer to the water these days and are happy to just go home after a fun day out on the water? Then that's when a boat like this Regal could actually be the perfect downsize option for you. We are in the big league of day boats here. This is a serious hull, with serious space and loads of luxury and what might be the most interesting to many of you stepping down from bigger yachts is the wrap around protection that can easily open up when you're at your destination but close down while underway. This gives you a dry, fast and comfortable ride to and from your favourite spots. This is super interesting category at the moment - what do you think? If your outboard won’t start, won’t idle, or just refuses to run properly… there’s a good chance the carburettor is the problem. In this video, I take you step-by-step through replacing the carburettor on a Tohatsu 3.5HP 4-stroke outboard, including removing the old unit, fitting a new one, and explaining why modern carbs are often easier to replace than repair. Modern carburettors are effectively tamper-proof—tiny jets, sealed components, and emissions restrictions mean even a small amount of dirt can stop your engine running, and cleaning them isn’t always practical. In many cases, replacement is simply quicker, cheaper, and more reliable. ⸻ 🔧 What’s covered: * Removing the fuel tank and accessing the carb * Disconnecting fuel lines and linkages * Fitting a new carburettor * Replacing the fuel hose and adding an inline filter * Why modern carbs are difficult (or impossible) to clean * How a carburettor works (simple explanation) Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid XX 🇬🇧 ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️ =================================================== 👋 We’re Ant & Cid aboard SV Impavidus – two adventurers sailing full-time since 2018. This is not just a boat — it’s a piece of maritime history. In this video, we step aboard a 62-foot classic wooden yacht, beautifully built in mahogany and teak, and now celebrating over 50 years on the water. The current owner has cared for her for 25 years and knows every detail inside and out. Join us for a full walkthrough as he shares: The story behind the boat Construction details and craftsmanship Layout and onboard systems Ownership experience over 25 years What makes this yacht truly special? This video is made as part of the sales process, giving you an honest and detailed look at a rare classic yacht now looking for her next owner. Are you interested in this classic wooden boat? Please read more here: https://skippern.yachts/yacht/sirius-of-art/ 📍 Featured on: @Sailing-Maja and @skippernyachts If you appreciate classic yachts, wooden boats, and true craftsmanship, this is a tour you don’t want to miss. A rare classic with soul, history, and timeless elegance. Built in 1977 at Cantieri Valdettaro in La Spezia, Italy, to the designs of the renowned British naval architect Lawrence Giles. Sirius of Art is a true one-off sloop-rigged sailing yacht measuring 18.8 m (61 ¾ ft) – carvel-planked with teak below the waterline, mahogany above, and a teak deck. With 36 tonnes displacement, 15 tonnes ballast, and a sail area of 275 m² (plus approx. 200 m² spinnaker/gennaker), she combines classic lines with impressive sailing performance and robustness for long ocean passages. Below deck, she exudes the warm luxury of a bygone era: rich teak and mahogany joinery, a cozy saloon with fireplace, a large dining area for 14–16 people, comfortable double cabins, three bathrooms with showers, a separate captain’s cabin, and a well-equipped galley. She offers berths for 6–12 overnight guests depending on the desired level of comfort – ideal for family cruises, friends, sailing holidays, or maritime courses and gatherings. Sirius of Art has circumnavigated the globe twice, served as a charter yacht in the Mediterranean, and arrived in Norway in 1997 when the current owner purchased her from a British earl. Since then, she has been based in Norway, lovingly maintained by an experienced wooden-boat enthusiast who ran Grimsenkilen Båtbyggeri. She has been used as a private yacht, sailing school, and venue for maritime courses – always treated with the respect and care such a gem deserves. Today she is in seaworthy and good condition, winterized but fully operational. A coastal holiday cruise along the Norwegian coast is planned for the summer of 2026 – clear proof that she is still living the life she was built for. Opportunities for the next owner – elevate her to new splendor: Upgrade navigation electronics (chartplotter, radar, AIS, VHF, etc.) to modern standards – all equipment is on board, but dated. Consider a new sail wardrobe (current sails are functional but aging). A thorough refresh of varnish, teak, and surfaces – a proper spring refit that will make her shine like new. Restore certain interior woodwork in authentic teak and mahogany to complete the original, exclusive atmosphere. This is not a major restoration – rather, loving care and thoughtful modernization that will make her even more personal and impressive. Sirius of Art is for those seeking something truly unique: the genuine wooden-boat enthusiast who values authentic craftsmanship, maritime traditions, and character above mass-produced perfection. Whether you enjoy working on wood and rigging yourself or have the resources to engage skilled professionals, the right investment will yield a yacht that tells stories – a living link to the golden age of yachting. The current owner, now 80 years old, wishes to pass this masterpiece on to the next generation. He knows the boat inside and out and is happy to assist the new owner with technical insight, stories, and practical advice to ensure a smooth transition. The yacht is located in Norway. Interested parties can view her in the summer of 2026. Delivery by agreement. Contact yacht broker Jarle Karlsrud at Skippern Yachts for more information, full technical specifications, additional photos, or viewings. Skippern Yachts is a well-established Norwegian yacht brokerage with a global perspective, operating internationally across Europe. With many years of experience in cross-border sales, Skippern Yachts assists clients throughout the entire process – from marketing and negotiations to handling all formalities, documentation, and legal requirements with professionalism and care. Sirius of Art is more than a boat – she is a heritage, an experience, and a piece of living history. Are you the next to fill her sails?
Goofy jokes, more painting, a secret, broken generator, dancing, several comments Previously took Isabella out for a spin and turned her around at the dock so we could easily work on the starboard side. Our green "racing" stripe needed some help. We taped plastic between the boat and dock to catch any sanding dust generated. Using the belt sander it was soon ready to paint. Blue taping took almost as long as sanding. Once prepared a coat of Petit one part polyurethane in green was applied. The weather looked great but soon changed as rain delayed the second coat. Pardon our goofy jokes in between. Still working on the Northern Lights generator. It starts but you have to keep the glow plugs energized for it to continue running, otherwise it dies. Previously replaced all of the relays to no avail. Started bleeding the fuel lines to make sure there is no air in them. Didn't work. Ordered a new oil pressure switch hoping it is the decisive fix. Trial and error. Might eventually have to hire a professional to diagnose it. Addressed several comments from various episodes and, of course danced. Hey y’all, our Sony video camera broke and you can help us replace it.
Step aboard Episode 5 of Let’s Talk Yachts with Erik Haaland, featuring a special interview with Franco Corazza, Project Manager for the Grand Soleil PLUS range. In this episode, Erik and Franco discuss the vision behind the Grand Soleil PLUS line, the design and construction philosophy of Cantiere del Pardo, and what makes these yachts unique in the world of luxury performance cruising. From the Grand Soleil PLUS 65 LC and PLUS 72 LC to the new Grand Soleil PLUS 80, the conversation explores how Grand Soleil blends Italian design, advanced composite construction, offshore capability, and owner-driven customization into a true bluewater sailing yacht. The PLUS range represents the larger, more bespoke side of Grand Soleil, built for owners who want serious cruising capability without giving up performance, elegance, or the pure sailing experience. Erik and Franco also discuss the shipyard’s in-house construction process, carbon and epoxy building methods, layout flexibility, and the type of owner drawn to these yachts, from private cruisers to long-distance voyagers and those planning ambitious passages around the world. But before installing it, we had to face a problem: it simply didn’t fit the boat as designed. But making it work means redesigning everything: layout, ergonomics, visibility, and even how we’ll navigate the boat day-to-day. Is simpler actually better? And how far would you go to get it right? Let me know what you think. __________________________________________________ We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are building a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. SUBSCRIBE to our channel and join us every SUNDAY for a new episode of our journey!! #boat # building #sailboat
We are Patricia and Ed. We have been living on a 46 feet Catamaran and exploring the world on the water! We have always loved to travel and explore new places around the world. Our first extended trip was a road trip in the US were we got to see over 20 states and ride 30.000 kilometers on our ECO Friendly Van. It was simply awesome and raised our awareness to the fact that we did not have to be tight down to a land home to continue to work and travel. Now, we’re on a sailing exploration journey attempting to circumnavigate the world aboard JOY. Patricia did not have any previous sailing experience, but was willing to learn on the fly. Now neither of us are too technical and know how to fix things too much, super rich or retired, but we always had big dreams. What motivates us is the possibility to explore and learn along the way, share our experiences here on YouTube, be helped and help others along this Journey. We want to continue to uncover the meaning of Happiness, Joy and Kindness along the way and hopefully bring something to you that will also make you think of alternative possibilities in life. We hope you enjoy been part of this journey along side us ! Want to know more about us? In this episode we race against another lagoon 450, then have a surprise visitor who starred in the reality TV show Below Deck, after taking over from Captain Lee. I also did a few seasons of below deck, so it was fun to hang out again, and share stories, as well as find a massive shipwreck on the reef just in front of where we were anchored! SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing through Asia and planning to cross the Indian Ocean!!
