Our plan was to sail from our home port of Capo D'Orlando, Sicily to Sardinia, stopping in Ustica. The stop on the island of Ustica went as planned, but the rest of our plans, not so much. Our channel is all about sailing the Mediterranean. We help anyone who wants to sail the Mediterranean, whether they are brand new at it, aspiring to go, or just arm-chair traveling. We generally post about our adventures with beautiful scenery and helpful hints, but we also post about the challenges too and how we resolve them. Attitude is everything!

If your fiberglass still looks cloudy or hazy after epoxy, the problem isn't your wood, it's physics. In this video, I explain the science behind the Light Gap Problem, one of the most important concepts in composite boatbuilding. We'll explore how light interacts with fiberglass, epoxy, and air, and why understanding refractive index can help you diagnose wet-out problems, avoid trapped air, and produce clearer, stronger laminates. You'll learn why dry fiberglass appears white or cloudy, how epoxy makes fiberglass seem to "disappear," and the role refractive index plays in composite laminates. I'll cover why E-glass and epoxy are nearly optically matched, how trapped air creates white spots and hazy areas, and why dark-stained wood often reveals the weave more than natural wood does. We'll also look at how to recognize proper wet-out versus microvoids and incomplete saturation. Whether you're building a kayak, canoe, dinghy, strip-built boat, or working with fiberglass composites in general, understanding these principles will improve both the appearance and performance of your laminations. For most of human history, people who felt trapped by their circumstances could leave everything behind and head toward a new frontier. They could escape their social class, family reputation, past failures, or limited opportunities and try to build something entirely new. But do those kinds of fresh starts still exist? In this episode, I explore why starting over may be harder today than it was for previous generations, why fewer people are willing to risk everything, and whether the world has simply run out of places where your past does not define your future. I also share a story from my own family history about an ancestor who, according to the story passed down through my family, was the thirteenth son of an English lord. With little chance of inheriting anything, he left England for the New World to build a life of his own. We discuss the influence of the frontier on American ambition and entrepreneurship, the uncomfortable truth that these lands were never actually empty, and whether technology, space, artificial intelligence, international living, and online businesses have become the new frontiers. Maybe there are no truly undiscovered places left. But perhaps the biggest frontier has always been the decision to walk away from the life you were given and attempt to create a different one. After spending a few nights anchored off the beautiful island of Koh Tao, it was time to continue south toward Koh Samui. We had a great sail down, found a mooring for the boat, and prepared to move ashore for a few days. My Thai visa was about to expire, which meant I needed to make a quick flight to Singapore and return to Thailand. I didn’t want to leave Nika alone on the boat while I was gone, so we found an Airbnb on Koh Samui and moved onto land.
