After a number of very light wind or extremely strong wind race days so far in the Australian 18 Footers League’s 2025-26 season on Sydney Harbour, today’s Race 6 of the League’s Club Championship was finally expected to produce a more traditional 15-knot North East wind - perfect weather for 18ft skiff racing conditions. That was the expectation, but sadly the ongoing weather situation became even worse than the other race days and the racing was abandoned after the first lap of the three-lap North East course when the wind turned to the west and freshened well beyond the fleet’s ability to continue with their big #1 rigs. Obviously, the point scores remain as they were with Yandoo leading on a total of 20 points. Balmain is in 2nd place with a total of 25, followed by Rag & Famish Hotel and Sixt, equal in 3rd place on 26 points. Other points in the top-10 are, Lazarus Capital Partners and Smeg on 35, Club Marine 36, Shaw and Partners Financial Services 46, Sotheby’s Ballard Property 47 and Fisher & Paykel on 54 points. The all-female crew on The Famous Project CIC have set off on an attempt to capture the Jules Verne Trophy and break the round the world record. The Jules Verne Trophy, which is displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Paris, is the prize for the fastest circumnavigation of the world by any type of yacht with no restrictions on the size of the crew, provided the vessel has registered with the organisation and paid an entry fee. A vessel holding the Jules Verne trophy may not necessarily hold the absolute round the world record, although it currently does. It was initially awarded to the yacht which sailed around the world in less than 80 days, as per the Jules Verne novel Around the World in Eighty Days in which Phileas Fogg traversed the planet. The current holder is IDEC Sport skippered by Francis Joyon who completed the circumnavigation in 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds, finishing on 26th January 2017. Joyon sailed 26,412 nautical miles at an average speed of 26.85 knots. Skippered by Alexia Barrier, with Dee Caffari as first officer, together with an international crew of six female sailors, The Famous Project CIC crossed the start line on the maxi trimaran IDEC Sport at 13.40 UTC on Saturday 29th November. To complete the course, they must round the three great capes: Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, and Cape Horn. It is the first time since 1998 that there has been an all-female attempt at the record, when Tracy Edwards and crew on Royal & Sun Alliance were dismasted 2,000 miles from Cape Horn. Today we had an absolutely perfect four-hour downwind sail from Anegada to Jost Van Dyke here in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. Conditions couldn’t have been better — blue water, steady breeze, and a happy crew enjoying every mile. Once we arrived at Jost Van Dyke, we headed straight for the famous Bubbly Pool, one of the coolest natural features in the BVI. It’s always fun watching the surge roll in and turn the whole spot into a natural jacuzzi! After exploring, we set sail again for a short hop over to Cane Garden Bay on Tortola. It’s one of my favorite anchorages in the islands — great beach, great food, and great company. We grabbed dinner, relaxed on the sand, and of course the ladies looked fantastic enjoying the sunshine and crystal-clear water. Thanks for joining us on another sailing adventure! This is a short clip of a recent Gale in the North Atlantic halfway between Cape Cod and Bermuda. Wind speed at this point were in the mid 30's and seas were still building. This system lasted 48 hours and during the peak I had to hand steer for about 6 hours as the windvane couldn't keep the boat on a good heading. The thing to remember is this is 6 minutes of 48 hours, day and night winds above 34 knots. The only damage this time was a ripped spray skirt.
