Boat problems have changed our plans once again! With the boat needing repairs, we move into an Airbnb on Koh Samui for a few days and decide that if we're going to be stuck on land… we might as well make the most of it! We rent a motorbike and set off to explore the island, including a stop at an awesome petting zoo where the meerkats apparently decide we're part of the exhibit and climb all over us. 😂 Then we experience another side of Thailand with a night at the Muay Thai fights before heading back to check on the boat and hopefully get back out on the water. Unfortunately, the news isn't good. There are even more problems, and the boat is going to be unusable for at least another four or five days. So it's back to another Airbnb and Plan B — enjoying everything Koh Samui has to offer! We finish things off at an amazing beach club, proving that sometimes cruising doesn't go according to plan… but that doesn't mean you can't have a good time along the way. Sometimes I get frustrated that I can’t work as much as I’d like because of the heat. Because of it, there are times when I feel like I’m just melting into a puddle. But I can’t say that I’m particularly upset about it. I’m mostly just patiently waiting for the season to change a little and continuing to work. In this video, I also reflect on how much my perspective has changed on what I actually need to start sailing, compared to all the ambitious plans I had in the very beginning. On a calm August morning off Ponta Malongane, Southern Mozambique, we sent the drone 1.2km out to sea over a whale we sighted. The calf looks very young, probably only a day or two old. Humpback whales are known to keep their young very close, so this is classic behaviour.

While diagnosing a Cummins 6BTA for low power that was related to clogged fuel filters, I stumbled upon a few issues that were much worse than I expected! During the general inspection, one of the more alarming things we found was alot of metal in the coolant header tank. Let's talk about what that is. what caused it and how to avoid this kind of bad news!

Sailboat living in British Columbia's Southern Gulf Islands gives us access to some remarkable places. This time, a few days aboard W. Grebe led to hiking the old homestead orchards of Prevost Island. Mary and I sailed our classic wooden gaff-rigged sailboat to Prevost Island with no particular agenda. We found a quiet anchorage, went ashore for a walk, and ended up following traces of the people who homesteaded here long ago—old orchards, abandoned farms, forgotten clearings and fruit trees still growing wild in the forest. It was supposed to be nothing more than a quiet couple of days away. That's one of the things I like about sailboat living. The sailing gets us somewhere, but often what happens after we drop the anchor becomes the story. W. Grebe is our home. She's a classic wooden sailboat with a traditional gaff rig, and Mary and I live aboard her in the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia. From here, we explore the islands and coast by sail, finding quiet anchorages and going ashore to see what's there. Sometimes that's hiking through an old homestead. Sometimes it's fishing, gathering wild food, exploring a beach or following some small clue in the landscape simply because we want to know where it leads. Living aboard a sailboat has changed the scale at which we explore. A place doesn't have to be famous or dramatic to be worth visiting. Prevost Island is only a short sail from home, but travelling there aboard an old wooden boat, anchoring for the night and exploring on foot makes it feel very different from simply arriving somewhere by road. That's increasingly what I want these films to be about. Not just sailing. Not just destinations. They're about living a little more deliberately and remaining curious about the places around us. There will certainly be plenty of sailing British Columbia's coast aboard Grebe. There will also be traditional sailing and old wooden boats, hiking, wild food, fly fishing, remote places, natural history and the people and stories connected to these landscapes. Some adventures will happen almost within sight of home. Others will eventually take us much farther away. For now, we're exploring the Southern Gulf Islands and the Salish Sea—one anchorage, island and unexpected discovery at a time. ABOUT W. GREBE W. ABOUT THIS TRIP We sailed W. Grebe through the Southern Gulf Islands to Prevost Island, British Columbia, where we anchored for a couple of days and went hiking ashore. Prevost still carries traces of its agricultural and homesteading history. Old orchards, farm sites and fruit trees remain scattered through a landscape that has largely returned to forest. We didn't set out specifically looking for them. We simply started walking and followed what we found. That's exactly the sort of day I hope to have more of. ABOUT THIS CHANNEL I'm John Fraser. I've spent much of my life outdoors—fly fishing, hunting, gathering wild food and learning to pay attention to landscapes and the things living in them. Now Mary and I live aboard W. This week felt... weirdly reassuring. 😂 I'm finally back in Les Sables-d'Olonne and honestly, what a breath of fresh air. All the other competitors are arriving, boats are everywhere, everyone is working and, most importantly... I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH A RIDICULOUSLY LONG TO-DO LIST. I don't know if I should find that comforting, but I absolutely do. 😂 So this week was another one of those weeks where I worked all day and somehow the boat looked exactly the same at the end of it. Things came off. Other things went on. Things moved into storage. Things came back out of storage because apparently I still need them. And I'm still trying to understand how everything I need for eight months at sea is supposed to physically fit inside Showgirl. But we're getting there. The final four weeks are here now, and there's still A LOT to do. Tomorrow the official GGR programme begins, which means the boat work now has to somehow fit around inspections, briefings, tests, events and everything else that's about to start. So... here we go. Four more weeks of chaos. The 80th Anniversary Firefly Championship has begun at Tenby Sailing Club in Wales with 116 boats competing. For most races the fleet is using gate starts, where a pathfinder starts on port tack with a RIB just behind them, and every other competitor needs to start behind them. We take a look at what it's like to approach the gate on starboard in such a big fleet. I finally enter Charlotte Harbor, four days out of Panama City, FL, owing perhaps more to the flooding current than whatever wind there was. But an afternoon sea breeze works up to propel me to the anchorage off of Boca Grande Marina. Boca Grande is certainly scenic, although the nearest Publix supermarket is eight miles away, so I get a good workout on the bicycle. Then my sightseeing is interrupted by an approaching cold front, obliging me to move the boat to a more secure anchorage. A peaceful afternoon at anchor suddenly turned into one of the most dramatic incidents I've witnessed in years. What I first thought was a catamaran anchoring too close to SV Impavidus turned out to be something far more serious. With nobody on board, the yacht had dragged its anchor and was drifting backwards across the harbour in strengthening winds—heading directly towards a line of old steel and concrete piles. I wanted to help. I lowered the dinghy and seriously considered going after her, but with around one-metre waves inside the harbour, 28-knot winds and gusts over 30 knots, attempting a rescue alone would have been putting my own life at risk. Instead, I tried everything else. • Repeated calls on VHF Channel 16. • Calls to the harbour authorities. • Long blasts on the foghorn. No response. Eventually another skipper contacted the marina, who alerted the Italian Coastguard. A large rescue RIB arrived and managed to prevent what could easily have become a total loss. Incredibly, during the incident the drifting catamaran also hooked my own anchor and dragged SV Impavidus from her position—something I only discovered later. It was one of those days that reminds us how quickly things can change at anchor, and why every skipper should understand the risks of dragging anchor and leaving a boat unattended.
