Performance cruising catamarans like the Outremer, Balance, and HH are often seen as the gold standard for fast offshore sailing catamarans - but with price tags running well into the millions of euros, it raises the question… do you really need to spend that much money to get a catamaran that’s genuinely fun to sail? In this episode, we test three of the top production cruising catamarans designed to deliver a more exciting sailing experience at a more affordable price. We sea trial the Seawind 1370, Excess 13, and Nautitech 44 Open to find out which is best! We'll be discussing: ✔️ Sailing performance ✔️ Offshore capability ✔️ Comfort at sea ✔️ Helm protection ✔️ Speed in light and strong winds ✔️ Liveaboard practicality From hitting double-digit boat speeds to testing screechers and gennakers in real sailing conditions, we compare how these cruising catamarans perform and if they're actually any fun to sail! ⛵ Which catamaran would you buy? Drop your thoughts in the comments below! Massive thanks to the yacht builders for taking us out! We sail on the good ship Saracen, a Beneteau Oceanis 473 from 2006. Out journey started in Scotland in early 2023 and our ultimate goal is to sail around the globe …..slowly. We make these videos mostly for family and friends and to create a record of our adventures for ourselves so that we can look back at them later in life, were not in it to make money (way to hard). Day 26 of 75 Hard and the challenge is starting to feel real now! This morning aboard Dream we completed another Couch to 10K session, followed by yoga stretching and a final run back to the boat. Little by little we’re improving, and we’re both really starting to enjoy the running now. Today we talk about: The importance of small daily gains Why discipline matters more than motivation How changing our diet is affecting performance Fueling workouts with healthy carbs Managing 75 Hard while living aboard a sailboat Friends arriving onboard during the challenge Balancing workouts, healthy eating, YouTube videos and podcast production This next week will probably be one of the toughest yet with guests staying aboard, but the challenge continues: ✔ Two 45-minute workouts every day ✔ Healthy clean eating ✔ No alcohol ✔ Reading daily ✔ Staying consistent no matter what We’re now over one-third of the way through 75 Hard and learning that real change comes from consistency, commitment and embracing discomfort. Thanks for following the journey aboard Dream! #75Hard #SailingLife #FitnessJourney #CouchTo10K #LiveaboardLife #Discipline #Motivation #HealthyLifestyle #RunningJourney #BoatLife ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you found it informative or entertaining please give it a thumbs as it helps get YouTube to promote it outside of the existing subscribers. I charge $500 for a 90-min boat consultation. Today, for free, I'm giving you the forensic audit process I’ve developed over 24 years on the water, from nuclear submarines to offshore sailboats. Why this matters: * The Forensic Audit: How to list every system and calculate its true remaining lifespan. * The 16-Year Rule: Why standing rigging is a $20,000 bill waiting to happen. * Hassle Tax: How to negotiate 20% off the price when inheriting deferred maintenance. * Bronze Truth: Why "beautiful" through-holes might actually be pink, brittle, and dangerous. Get the Book: If you want the full breakdown on vetting offshore vessels, I’ve dedicated an entire chapter of my book to this exact subject. We have less than 200 copies left of the first edition cowhide cover before the second printing arrives. 📖 Grab "Be The Captain" here: https://bethecaptain.com/ ⚓ Book a Private Consultation: https://bethecaptain.com/pages/private-offshore-decision-session Contact Chris (rigger): https://www.cc-rigging.com/

I got embarrassing shrinkage - Building the Poulsbo Boat #WoodenBoat#PoulsboBoat #WoodenBoatBuilding
Howdy folks! Welcome back to Nomad Boat Building. My name is Mark Reuten, and this video is part of the Poulsbo Boat Project, where I’m documenting the complete build of a modern Poulsbo Boat from start to finish. The Poulsbo Boat is being built using traditional wooden boatbuilding techniques combined with practical modern methods where appropriate. Throughout this series you'll see the full process including lofting, milling lumber, laminating structural parts, strip planking, fiberglassing, interior joinery, and final fit-out. If you're interested in woodworking, traditional craftsmanship, wooden boats, and real boat shop problem solving, this series follows the entire build step-by-step. Will this DIY plywood boat we built in just one week actually float? After our dinghy got stolen in the Cape Verde islands, so we decided to build one ourselves. on a small island in Africa. In someone else’s garage. With limited tools, limited materials, and a whole lot of improvisation. In this episode, we start building a 9ft stitch-and-glue plywood Spindrift dinghy from scratch. We share the process, the setbacks, and all the scrappy problem-solving along the way. Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. ► Aurore was only 5 years old when her father took her on her first transatlantic crossing. Her father is well known among multihull enthusiasts - he is Christian Hernandez, founder of the Multicap Caraïbes (Martinique) and Multicat Algarve (Portugal) shipyards. Thirty years later, father and daughter are once again heading across the Atlantic aboard the Punch 21.10 DC Palm Pleasure 2, a large day-charter catamaran! ► Monday, April 27, 11:30 pm, arrival in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. ► “I’ve always loved nighttime arrivals. At first, you can barely see anything on the horizon. Then points of light gradually begin to appear, and after a few hours, you can even start to make out the shape of the mountains behind the city. It takes me back to my childhood memories in the Caribbean—those late arrivals at anchor after a day’s sailing on the Punch boats. Looking back, I realize how lucky I was to experience all those magical moments as a child. Tonight, though, things feel a bit different. It’s colder, I’m in full foul-weather gear, hood pulled tight. Even though we arrive after weaving between cargo ships and tankers at anchor, I’m still amazed when land comes into view. ► The next day, everything slows down. It quickly becomes clear that timing isn’t really on our side. The May 1st weekend brings everything to a halt. No way to change the oil in the new engines, no progress on certain technical tasks, no departure for several days. I’ve always struggled with these forced waiting periods. It feels like coming to a sudden stop when everything should keep moving forward. And then, in the end, you adapt. You find a different rhythm: a yoga session on deck, a long hot shower, a chocolate mousse at a local restaurant, then another one up in the mountains… and eventually, a new pace takes shape!” ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! There’s something very appealing about a boat that knows exactly what it is. The Harbour Classic 52 by Whitehaven Motor Yachts leans into that understated Down East styling that so many experienced boaters seem to come back to later in life. Classic lines, shaft-drive diesels, practical spaces and a layout that feels designed for real owners rather than a boat show checklist. For many people this probably isn’t a “first” boat. It’s more likely the result of years spent sailing, owning larger yachts or simply understanding what actually matters once the novelty wears off. Today we take a closer look around the Harbour Classic 52 here on the Gold Coast, Queensland and explore who will likely see the most value in a boat like this. From the 2.4m tender garage and social cockpit layout to the surprisingly simple operation, there’s a lot to unpack here. In the next episode we’ll take her offshore for a full sea trial and see how she performs underway. ► Presented at Nice Boating Tomorrow, the propulsion solution developed by ADV Propulse - featuring adjustable blades - is based on a vertical-axis rotor, an approach inspired by the natural movements observed in sharks. As a genuine alternative to conventional propeller systems, this technology clearly opens up interesting prospects for the multihulls of tomorrow. ► The distinctive feature of ADV Propulse’s technology lies in its ability to continuously adjust the blade pitch during rotation in order to optimize the thrust generated - an approach that remains largely underexploited at the industrial scale. ► Unlike a traditional propeller, the system allows thrust to be directed through 360°, offering significant advantages in terms of maneuverability, particularly during harbor operations. ► The system is also designed to be reversible. “It can operate both in propulsion mode and in hydro-generation,” explains Gaëtan Mignot, head of the engineering office at ADV Propulse. Another notable aspect is its operation at low rotational speeds, which is expected to improve onboard comfort by reducing vibrations and underwater noise. ► Depending on the configuration, ADV Propulse also claims gains in energy efficiency compared to conventional propellers. The technology has been tested on several demonstrators, including a project conducted in collaboration with Yves Parlier and Beyond the Sea, enabling exploration of its various applications under real conditions. ► The company is currently working on an initial version intended for outboard units, representing the first step in the development of this technology. Having been showcased for several seasons at boat shows, ADV Propulse’s technology continues to progress and is now entering a pre-commercial phase, with the gradual establishment of a distribution network across Europe. ► www.adv-propulse.fr ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! Welcome back to Sailing Marisa! In this episode, I'm diving into my first major solar energy project. I'm installing a rigid solar panel on the sailboat's guardrail to increase our energy independence while at anchor. It wasn't easy! From missing drill bits and high winds in the marina to a classic rookie mistake that left me with ZERO solar output for a moment—I'm sharing all the ups, downs, and drama of this DIY project. Learn how I routed the cables from the deck to the house battery, installed the solar charge controller (MPPT), added an essential disconnect switch for safety, and tweaked the mounting system for maximum sun exposure. I also address a common question: Is this channel monetized? (Spoiler: Not yet! It's still a labor of love!). Whether you're looking for practical solar installation tips for your own boat or just enjoy the honest reality of sailboat maintenance, this episode has something for you. 🔧 Gear Used in This Episode: Note: I have NO affiliation or partnership with any of these brands.
