Today was supposed to be a big celebration day. I officially sailed the first 2,000 nautical miles of this journey. Halfway through my sail. Which is kind of wild when I think about it. That part felt amazing. I was really proud of that moment. But the truth is, the day didn’t feel as joyful as I expected it to. Last night I barely slept. The boat was moving a lot and I just couldn’t settle. One of those nights where something doesn’t quite feel right. I kept thinking maybe I should change the sails, maybe I should adjust something, maybe I should be doing something different. So I spent most of the night half-awake, listening to every movement of the boat. And when you start the day like that… it’s hard to feel fully excited about anything. I tried though. I put glitter on my face, wore a dress, and made myself a proper celebration meal. Nachos. One of my favorites. I really tried to make the moment feel special. But the energy of the day was just a little lower than I hoped. And strangely, that’s okay. Because the big difference is this: even though today felt a bit down, I never once felt like I couldn’t do this. Last week, a day like this would have spiraled into doubts about the whole project. The race. Everything. Today it was just… a down day. And that feels like progress too. Because out here it’s always going to be ups and downs. The 7-10-7 Rule — An Old Boatbuilder’s Trick for Perfectly Rounding a Spar In this episode of Nomad Boatbuilding, I share a simple geometric method that replaces repetitive math when shaping spars by hand. Some people think wooden boat building requires complicated calculations. That can be true when designing boats — but building them is another story. In practice, geometry is often far more useful than math. The 7-10-7 rule is a straightforward way to divide the face of a square into proportional sections (7 units, 10 units, 7 units — 24 in total). By removing the corners at those marks, we quickly create an accurate octagon. Repeat the process and we move from square to octagon to 16 sides… and eventually to a smooth, round spar. We started this catamaran refit by tearing down the ceiling panels in our saloon to discover that the balsa core had completely rotted away, leaving a gap between the upper and lower fibreglass panels making up the deck. In last week's episode I cleared out all of the rotten wooden core and prepared the surface to rebuild. I got a little carried away and just had to cross my fingers that I could actually complete this repair rather than just making a mess and leaving it at that. This is usually Brioni's area of expertise but with her still in recovery at the moment, the whole project is left for me to have a go and try and figure out. Let's see if I can pull this one off! In this episode we cut open our rudders, which have water in them between the fiberglass and the foam. We also clean out all of the diesel bug from our fuel tank and make a shocking discovery. The bottom of the tank is completely pitted, and was on the verge of leaking fuel all through the bilge. The fix for this is still very unclear. SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing through Asia and planning to cross the Indian Ocean!!
