With help from fellow adventurers Lina Chu (a Vietnamese-Ukrainian photographer) and her partner Peter, Steve frames a structure designed to keep out snow while still letting light in all winter—using a clear tarp section in the middle and blue shrink wrap on the ends. After the framing is up and the plan is set, the crew takes a break for an off-the-beaten-path adventure: a windy hike to check out a nearby shipwreck—the MSC Baltic III— where an enormous cable-and-winch system has been rigged to move gear back and forth to the wreck. The first five days for the all female team on the The Famous Project CIC circumnavigation saw a cautious departure in rough seas and stormy squalls and a tricky crossing of an anticyclonic ridge off the coast of Portugal. Alexia Barrier, Dee Caffari, Annemieke Bes, Rebecca Gmür Hornell, Deborah Blair, Molly LaPointe, Támara Echegoyen and Stacey Jackson have since been sailing downwind in the trade winds. The maxi trimaran is shaking off the dust and lengthening its stride south of the Cape Verde Islands. The next challenge is the Doldrums, the Intertropical Convergence Zone, just above the equator, where the north-east and south-east trade winds collide, creating an area of great stormy instability, where sudden gusts of over 30 knots alternate with endless moments of dead calm. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Seitdem lag Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, und der Refit hatte begonnen. Am 17 August 2025 ist es wieder so weit. Obwohl Squib noch nicht ganz fertig ist, werfen wir die Leinen los und starten unsere erste Etappe donauabwärts. Dreieinhalb Wochen später erreichen wir das Donaudelta, der Mast wird gestellt, ein passendes Wetterfenster abgewartet, in zwei Sclägen überqueren wir das Schwarze Meer bis zum Bosporus. Ohne Einzuklarieren mit gehisster Q Flagge durchqueren wir die Türkei und erreichen 5 Tage später die Ägäis. Über Limnos und die nördlichen Sporaden segeln wir bis in den Großraum Athen, von wo aus Sabina nach Hause fliegt, weil ihr Urlaub zu Ende ist. Kite test day on the Atlantic! We flew the kite for about 4–5 hours, switching between manual control and full autopilot to see how the yacht performs in different wind angles and loads. In lighter breeze we held around 5.3–5.6 knots with minimal power draw. In stronger wind, the kite and solar together kept us close to energy-neutral at ~6 knots, even with the boat fully underway. Every hour teaches us more. We’re learning as we go, testing conditions, fine-tuning the setup and gathering real data for the rest of the passage. More updates coming from the ocean.
