Ceris and Paul are the poster children for a husband and wife team fully committed to a racing program. "We're just committed to racing Obsession. If the boat is not used, we feel bad," Ceris noted. That commitment has paid off with back to back Ocean Racing Western Australian Championships and a long list of major wins. They trace their path from New Zealand to WA, coming back to sailing after raising a family, and building a crew culture that Ceris describes as "as much a family as we are a crew of good sailors." Paul credits three things for the results: seamanship and boat management, disciplined maintenance and sail upgrades, and strong team leadership from Geoff Bishop, owner of UK Sailmakers Fremantle. "We discussed our sail inventory, and we went entirely with UK Sailmakers' recommendations. We were a test platform for UK's new Integrated Structural Luff technology, and ISL, like all our UK sails, just plain works!" ⚓ UNA SEMANA DE MANTENIMIENTO… HASTA QUE EL VIENTO CAMBIÓ TODO 🌪️ Esta semana a bordo del Kira-Kira comenzó como tantas otras: trabajando, manteniendo y preparando el barco para lo que viene. ⛵🔧 Aprovechamos los días tranquilos para limpiar el fondo del barco, revisar distintos puntos y tratar con ácido fosfatizante algunas zonas donde la corrosión empezaba a aparecer. Porque vivir a bordo también significa esto: muchas horas de trabajo que no siempre se ven en las fotos, pero que son fundamentales para poder seguir navegando. 🧽⚓ Pero sobre el final de la semana, todo cambió. 🌪️ Un fuerte vendaval comenzó a azotar la costa, con vientos que llegaron a alcanzar los 60 nudos. Con las averías que ya veníamos arrastrando y el barco con algunas limitaciones, llegó el momento de dejar de trabajar en el mantenimiento y concentrarnos en algo mucho más importante: prepararnos para pasar el temporal de la mejor manera posible. Buscamos un fondeo seguro, revisamos todo lo que podía comprometerse y esperamos. Las horas de viento fueron intensas, pero finalmente el Kira-Kira atravesó el vendaval sin novedades. 💙⚓ Una vez más, el mar nos recuerda que navegar no es solamente disfrutar de los días tranquilos. Se la tua ancora si incaglia spesso, il problema potrebbe non dipendere dall’ancora stessa, ma da come viene utilizzata. Uno degli errori più comuni è lasciare troppa poca catena o cima rispetto alla profondità del fondale. L’ancora deve riuscire ad appoggiarsi correttamente e lavorare con la giusta inclinazione. Se la linea di ancoraggio è troppo corta, l’ancora può assumere una posizione sfavorevole e avere maggiori probabilità di bloccarsi tra rocce e altri ostacoli. ⚓ Quanta catena lasciare quando si ancora? Come riferimento viene spesso insegnato un rapporto di circa 1:3 tra profondità e lunghezza della linea di ancoraggio, da adattare però alle condizioni reali. Fondale, vento, corrente, spazio disponibile e caratteristiche dell’imbarcazione possono richiedere valutazioni differenti. Un altro elemento fondamentale è scegliere l’ancora adatta al tipo di fondale. Sabbia, fango, ghiaia e roccia hanno caratteristiche molto diverse e non tutte le ancore lavorano allo stesso modo su ogni superficie. Prima di ancorare è quindi utile conoscere il tipo di fondale e verificare se l’ancora installata sulla propria barca è adatta alle condizioni che si incontreranno. 🔧 Attenzione anche a musone, giunto e girella dell’ancora. Una girella ben funzionante può consentire all’ancora di ruotare e posizionarsi correttamente, mentre un musone adeguato permette alla catena e all’ancora di lavorare e scorrere nel modo previsto. Anche questi componenti possono fare la differenza durante le operazioni di ancoraggio e recupero. ⚓ Come recuperare un’ancora senza incagliarla ancora di più? Evita, quando possibile, di iniziare il recupero mentre la barca è ancora molto distante dal punto in cui si trova l’ancora. Tirando la catena con una forte componente orizzontale potresti aumentare la presa dell’ancora sul fondale. È preferibile portare la barca in prossimità della verticale dell’ancora e procedere quindi al recupero. In determinate situazioni, superare leggermente il punto dell’ancora può aiutare a modificare la direzione della forza e facilitarne il disincaglio. After our boat was badly damaged by the boatyard, we now have to trust them to lift Escapade again — and this time, everything has to go right. After everything that happened to Escapade, the time finally comes to start putting her back together. But before we can get anywhere near putting this nightmare behind us, there is one thing we have been absolutely dreading… we have to trust the boatyard to lift our boat again. After watching our boat sustain serious damage during the previous lift, seeing her go back onto the same equipment was nerve-wracking to say the least. This time, every lifting point, every support and every movement matters. In this episode, we begin the repairs and start dismantling parts of the cabin to access the areas that need to be rebuilt. We show you exactly what is involved in repairing the structural damage, what we discover along the way, and how the repair process comes together. At the same time, things with the boatyard continue to be difficult, with more challenges and frustrations appearing as we try to get Escapade repaired and ready for the next stage. After months of being stuck, dealing with the damage, insurance battles, unexpected costs and one setback after another, we're desperate to finally get our home back to where she needs to be.
