Sailing a small vessel from the Mediterranean to the Canary Islands, back in 2002. The sailing yacht Thule is a Comfortina 32, made in Sweden. The boat is made for coastal cruising and racing. It was never meant for ocean passages, but we did not understand that at that time. I still remember my sailmaker said: "Nobody crosses an ocean with a Comfortina!" Well, at that time he was right. Nobody had ever crossed an ocean with a Comfortina, yet. We were so prepared and had so much faith in the boat and ourself (We were young...) so we made it a god and off we went. We prepared her as good as we could and headed for the big adventure. In this video you will see three minutes of the sailing from the Mediterranean, to Gibraltar and to the Canary Islands. This was no problem at all, so in the next video you will se us sailing cross the Atlantic, probably for the first time ever in a Comfortina. What did we learn? Go small, go simple and go now. Sail slow, and don't take any chances. https://windpilot.com/

We sailed from Norway to the Mediterranean, through the waterways of Europe, back in 2002. The boat was a Comfortina 32, made for summer sailing along the Swedish coast. It was never built for doing 220 locks in one go, or to be sailed across the vast Atlantic ocean. but we did both. A small family at sea, two parents and a daughter 20 months old, spend a year in this boat on the adventure of their lives. This was back in 2002 - 2003, several years before Youtube was launched. Now (2024) more than 20 years after this epic trip we have found the old video cassettes and edited them to a length and format that is suitable for Youtube. Follow us and se how we and the sailboat performs on the rivers and canals of mainland Europe. In later videos you will also see us in the Med and crossing the Atlantic ocean and spending time on the Caribbean beaches. But first, we need to get this boat from Sandefjord, Norway to the Mediterranean.

Intro Sailing Thule: Small boat, Big adventure In 2002, we set sail from Norway in a small sailboat, ready to explore the world. We were just two adults and a young child on an adventure like no other. We navigated the waterways of Europe, watched dolphins play in the Mediterranean, and crossed the vast Atlantic Ocean to reach the Caribbean. We sailed through strong winds, and at times, no wind at all. We spent four months enjoying life on the beach. We even raced against legendary yachts like the Velsheda and the Windrose. Much of our time was spent at anchor. Occasionally sailing from island to island, soaking in the beauty of the Caribbean. In the middle of the Atlantic, we came to the aid of another yacht in need, sharing what resources we could in the vast emptiness of the ocean. Shortly after, dolphins joined us, leaping joyfully alongside the boat, and also a pod of whales appeared close by. Some days were utterly windless, the sea like a mirror. Other days, the winds were almost too strong. We stopped to sketch our memories in the Azores, drifted through a calm in the English Channel, and finally, after 13 unforgettable months, we returned safely to Norway. In this series of videos, you’ll relive our incredible journey from 2002 to 2003. The video quality might not be what you’re used to today—remember, this was over two decades ago! Back then, George W. Bush was president, Facebook and YouTube didn’t even exist, the first iPhone was five years away, and the Tesla Model S was still a distant dream. So, subscribe to this channel to join us on this nostalgic adventure and get a glimpse of what life was like at sea back then. And by the way, I even wrote two books about this journey. 32 foot sailboat crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Antigua to the Azores. Another yacht has run out of fuel and is having trouble reaching the Azores. Over the short wave radio (SSB) we learned about this and the sailboat Thule comes to the rescue. How to transfer Diesel fuel in the middle of the ocean? We solved this by sailing really close, perhaps a bit too close under these circumstances and so far from help, in case this goes wrong. While sailing side by side the other boat throws a line to us, and we attach the can of fuel. Throwing this in the sea, and with the line they can pick it up. We did this twice, and this maneuver was quite exciting. This was during 2003, when the yacht Thule and her crew of two was sailing back from the West Indies after a years adventure. The other yacht, Louise III, ran out of fuel on her way to the Azores. The day of this fuel transfer it was quite windy, but they still needed fuel to get to the Azores in a sensible time. Then it's good to have friends on the sea! Never run out of fuel in the Atlantic ocean. Never run out of supplies.

During this process, they discovered the rudder's condition was poor, requiring a complete removal and repair. They needed to fix the fiberglass and fix the boat. This boat repair involved adding new material to the steel axle after finding it worn down. Nauticat 38 is being refurbished in 2024, and one of the things we found was that the rudder stem was almost worn out. Almost half of the diameter was lost, reducing the strength of the shaft to about 30%. A big wave, or a broach could have been enough to loose the rudder. At least it would have been an easy match for all the Orcas eating rudders for breakfast, lunch and dinner these days. By coincidence this fault was found, and luckily for us it was an easy (and expensive) thing to fix. Thanks a lot to Kjetil and his team at VakuumTeak in Väst (Orust, Sweden) for taking care of this. The boat is getting better and better, and this is soon the best Nauticat ever! The condition of the sailboat rudder required some boat repair. The fiberglass repair was extensive, but necessary to ensure safe sailing and extend the boat life. We had to do some yacht repair to make it all work out.

How can we make this boat a safer boat? This video addresses safety concerns on a Nauticat 38 Motor Sailor. The host specifically mentions the elevated aft deck and sliding doors as potential risks in heavy weather. He shares ideas to modify the boat to improve the safe boat experience. How we want to make our boat safer. How we want to rig our ketch rigged motor sailer. We have a Nauticat 38 motorsailer, and that is a fantastic boat. It is only two things we dont like with this boat. First thing is the elevated aft deck, that we think is unsecure in heavy weather. The other thing is the sliding doors on the side. I dont feel safe working on the aft deck, and I dont like climbing outside the boat in heavy weather. So, what can we do? I think I have found a solution. Follow me, and please give your comments on this down below. I really appreciate your comments on this. Have a look at this. This is our boat, with the sails she has today. I have rigged her so that I can do all sail handling from the aft deck. This works perfect in nice weather, but in heavy weather I don't like working on the aft deck. Then I want t stay inside the pilot house. So now I think: How can I operate the sails from inside the pilot house? Lets start with the mizzen. I can take a reef in the mizzen before I go indoors, and if the sheet is going from the aft deck to a position just outside the sliding door, then I can open the door and adjust this line. That should work, dont you think? Then, I have looked at the foresail. In heavy weather I want to furl the genoa in completely, and roll out a smaller self tacking jib. That will look like this. If this is self tacking, I can have the sheet to a winch just outside the sliding door. Then I can open the door, and operate this sheet as well from inside the pilot house. Then, the mainsail remains. I dont use the mainsail often, and in heavy weather it might be OK to use just the jib and the mizzen. What do you think? But it might be possible to put in two reefs in the main, and then get this sheet as well down to outside if the door. That will be the red line on the drawing. So, in heavy weather I will have the following sails: No genoa, this will be completely furled in. - Then a self tacking jib, this is the yellow sail. - Two reefs in the main, that is the red sail - One reef in the mizzen, that i the purple sail If all the sheets of these sails can be operated from just outside the door, and I also can adjust the area of the jib from that same position, then I would not need to leave the pilot house. What do you think about this solution? Do you think it will work? Do you think it will be worth the money? Have you seen someone rig the sails in this way before? I would love to read your comments, and to get inspiration on how to proceed on this project. Thanks a lot in advance! Yeah, and one more thing. I am also thinking about a wind vane for self steering, but that will be a later project. Did you like this? Please subscribe to get more content about Nauticat and sailing. Generally, I think the Nauticat is a very safe boat, but I have two concerns. 1. The raised aft deck is too high up. This can be dangerous in rough seas, and the guard rail is too low. 2. The access to the aft deck (cockpit) is through the sliding doors on the side. To get from the secure pilot house to the aft deck you need to climb outside the pilothouse. This can be dangerous in heavy weather. To help out this situation, I discuss some solutions in this video. How can we rigg the sails, and how can we operate the sails from inside the pilot house? Do you have thoughts on this solution? Do you have better ideas? I would love to see your comments below! Sailing through rough seas requires excellent boat handling skills. This boat demonstrates vessel stability even in heavy weather. It's important to have solid boat training to navigate in these conditions. Discussing the safety of the boat and how it handles in heavy seas. This motorsailer is strong and can handle rough seas. Considering boat safety is important for anyone yachting or boating. The narrator recounts a near-fatal incident while doing some solo sailing. He was thrown from his boat but survived, describing the experience as the day he almost died. He often sails single handed but this time was with a friend in a separate boat along the Norwegian coast. The day I almost died sailing! Once, when I was sailing alone, I was thrown out of the boat. Obviously I survived, but I was scared. I’ll tell you exactly what happened. Often when I sail, I sail single handed. That means that I am alone onboard. On this particular trip we were two friends who sailed together, each in our own boat. We were sailing along the Norwegian coast, in calm weather, for some days. Our boat is a Nauticat 38, while his boat was a Hallberg-Rassy 312. After a nice day at the sea we were approaching the small town Arendal. We had fair winds, with calm sea, but also some old swell coming in from the north sea. I started the engine, and took down the sails. The boat is a ketch, and the last sail down was the mizzen. Then I realized how much the mizzen had stabilized the boat. When the sails were down, the swell started to throw the boat around. It was not dramatical, but, yes, there were movements in the boat. Working on the raised aft deck, to pack the mizzen sail, then, suddenly, out of the blue, there was a wave coming that was bigger than the other ones. Loosing my balance, I clung to the mizzen boom, by pure reflex. The sheet was not tightened, and when I clung to the boom, we both went out off the side of the boat. Looking down, all I could see were my own legs five feet above the water. My grip got tighter around the mizzen boom. As you know, waves come and go, and the next wave was kicking the boat back upright. Both the boom and I came back, and seeing the aft deck below my feet, I just stepped down, and there I was, safe and secure, back in my boat. What a relief! I continued to pack the sail, thinking about what had just happened. All kinds of thoughts went through my head. Was I really outside the boat? What would have happened if I lost my grip? I was motoring with the autopilot engaged, and my friend in the Hallberg-Rassy was in front of us, so he could not see me falling out of the boat. We had agreed to meet in the harbor. Was I really working on the raised aft deck without my safety harness? Was that one wave actually big enough to kick me out of the boat? The Nauticat motorsailers are really great boats. They are comfortable and safe at sea, but the raised aft deck can be dangerous. The aft deck is surrounded by solid steel and teak railing for safety, but this railing is low. I am 6 feet 3 inches, and my centre of gravity is far above this rail. What did I learn? OK, I almost died this day. There were several reason for this. First, I was not really familiar with the boat and the movements in the boat. I was feeling secure with the mizzen sail up, that was stabilizing the boat. With the mizzen down I was surprised by the changes in the boats behavior. I do think that there was a, bigger than normal, wave that kicked me out. That is my opinion, who knows the fact? Second, the safety rail was too low, and I plan to raise that during this winter. And the last thing. I did not wear my safety hardness with the line attached to the boat. I should know better! Anyway. I did survive to tell the story. This way I can spend many more years out on this fantastic boat.
